2002

What do you miss the most from your childhood? What do you miss the most from those adolescent days? What do you miss the most from those innocent days? Is there any particular moment you miss the most? Is there any particular person you miss the most? Is there any particular year you miss the most? Do you still remember your first love, or what they may refer as “young love”? Do you still remember those times when you used to have your first crush? Do you still remember those days when you were young? Do you still remember those times when your biggest worry was the school’s homework? Do you still remember those times when you got excited to go to school every morning just to be able to see your crush? Do you still remember those songs from that time that you used to sing out loud with all your friends? Do you still remember your favorite singer from that time? Do you still remember how you used to dance along to the music of your favorite singer? Do you still visit that time, just in order to reminisce those good old days?

“I will always remember the day you kissed my lips. Light as a feather, and it went just like this. No, it’s never been better than the summer of 2002.” –Anne-Marie, 2002

I rarely listen to the current pop song, but this one song got me so ever since I listened to the cover version that my bestfriend did some time ago. (Perhaps I feel connected to the song because I’m around the same age of the singer.) It is titled “2002”, performed by British singer, Anne-Marie. It was released on April 20th 2018 and served as sixth single taken from the singer’s debut studio album, “Speak Your Mind”, which was released a week later on April 27th 2018. “2002” was written by Anne-Marie herself along with Steve Mac, Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels, and Benjamin Levin. Besides, other people are also credited as the co-songwriters as their songs are being sampled on one of the songs referenced in the chorus part of “2002”. They are Andreas Carlsson, George Clinton, El DeBarge, Randy DeBarge, Jay E, Ice-T, Etterlene Jordan, Kristian Lundin, Max Martin, Nelly, Alphonso Henderson, Jake Schulze, and City Spud. Yes, this song served as homage for some songs that inspired Anne-Marie; those songs were released between 1998 and 2004. And she put it beautifully in the chorus part of this pop song, as it depicts how the pop culture meets the childhood romance. An official music video directed by Hannah Lux Davis was released on May 8th 2018, and also served as homage to music video of the songs referenced in the chorus part.

Some memories are making us smile whenever they come up to the surface of our mind. Well, for me personally, it’s particularly the memories from those good old days. It was 2002. It was junior high school. And who doesn’t remember that day when we got our first kiss? And who doesn’t remember that we used to act like a grownup back then? It was natural. It was innocent. It was when we worry about nothing but the homework for tomorrow. And that kind of worry used to be washed away easily by thinking that we would meet our friends and lover at the school. And who didn’t think that love is forever and ever? It was pure. It was heartwarming. And it puts smiles on our face as we reminisce them. “I will always remember the day you kissed my lips. Light as a feather, and it went just like this. No, it’s never been better than the summer of 2002. We were only eleven, but acting like grownups. Like we are in the present, drinking from plastic cups. Singing love is forever and ever, well, I guess that was true.”
Young love was always mesmerizing. It was natural beauty at its best. It was pure innocence at its greatest. We thought that we own the world; that we had it in our palms. We thought that it’s us against the world; that we needed nothing else. We thought that we were on top of the world; that we hold it in our hands. “Now we’re under the covers, fast forward to eighteen. We are more than lovers, yeah, we are all we need. When we’re holding each other, I’m taken back to 2002.” And who didn’t dance freely without any worry and concern for what tomorrow may bring? And who didn’t sing loudly like there is no tomorrow? It was from those days when life used to seem easier than ever. It was from those days when love used to seem more sincere than ever. It was from those days when we were young. And it brings smile upon us as we remember those childish yet innocent moments. “Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods of an old Mustang, where we sang songs with all our childhood friends, and it went like this.”
Girls at my age must know Britney. And who doesn’t sing Britney’s song at that time? And who doesn’t dance to Britney’s song at that time? And I still remember vividly that time when I and my schoolmates were dancing to Britney’s song in the school’s event. And even until now, every of her song reminds me of those good old days; from the time when I fell in love for the first time until the time when I got my heart broken for the first time too. It was wonderful. It was memorable. It was started in 2002. I still remember other songs from that time. And they are all like pictures painted of the days when I was young. Every song has its memories and every song brings back certain moment to the surface of my mind. And it’s the kind of heartwarming ones. “Oops, I got ninety-nine problems singing bye, bye, bye, hold up. If you wanna go and take a ride with me, better hit me, baby, one more time. Paint a picture for you and me of the days when we were young. Singing at the top of both our lungs on the day we fell in love.”

Reminiscing the love from our adolescence days is always a heartwarming thing for me. It’s not that I want to go back to that time; it is just that they are already in the past, and hence it turns out beautifully carved in the memories. And even the bad moments are no longer staying as bad memories, but it turns out to be the things that are painted beautifully too. Therefore, it feels heartwarming. We know we cannot turn back the time. We know we cannot go back to that time. However, remembering our good old days, for me personally is one thing that can light up the spirit inside of me whenever the present seems so bleak. For by doing it, I am able to remember how I used to be; and it’s always good for not losing our sense of innocence. And I also believe that it’s always good for not losing our sense of purity and sincerity. And when we can find them in those memories, then why don’t we use it to get those senses back? We are human after all; and our main duty is to become a human before anything else.

I will always remember the day you kissed my lips
Light as a feather, and it went just like this
No, it’s never been better than the summer of 2002
We were only eleven, but acting like grownups
Like we are in the present, drinking from plastic cups
Singing love is forever and ever, well, I guess that was true

Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods of an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends, and it went like this, yeah

Oops, I got ninety-nine problems singing bye, bye, bye, hold up
If you wanna go and take a ride with me, better hit me, baby, one more time
Paint a picture for you and me of the days when we were young
Singing at the top of both our lungs

Now we’re under the covers, fast forward to eighteen
We are more than lovers, yeah, we are all we need
When we’re holding each other, I’m taken back to 2002

Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods of an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends, and it went like this, yeah

Oops, I got ninety-nine problems singing bye, bye, bye, hold up
If you wanna go and take a ride with me, better hit me, baby, one more time
Paint a picture for you and me of the days when we were young
Singing at the top of both our lungs
On the day we fell in love, on the day we fell in love

Dancing on the hood in the middle of the woods of an old Mustang, where we sang
Songs with all our childhood friends, oh now

Oops, I got ninety-nine problems singing bye, bye, bye, hold up
If you wanna go and take a ride with me, better hit me, baby, one more time
Paint a picture for you and me of the days when we were young
Singing at the top of both our lungs
On the day we fell in love, on the day we fell in love
On the day we fell in love, on the day we fell in love
On the day we fell in love, love, love
