Wandering on the Street
Everyone has their own way about how to deal with memories. For memories, particularly regarding to the one we hold most dear, are always there deep inside us. For memories, particularly the most precious ones are always here within us. They could come up to the surface of our mind whenever they want. They could come out suddenly at times. There are, of course, some things that can trigger those memories for coming again; like being at a certain place. And yes, for some people, a place isn’t just a place. A place is meaningful because of moments we’ve had in that place, times we’ve shared with our loved ones in that place. And a street can be so meaningful for it’s a street where we used to walk on together side by side with our loved ones. Those moments have built up memories. And that place has triggered those memories to greet us again. In a distant future, we find ourselves wandering on that street again, since we long for those moments and our loved ones so much. And we greet those memories with a warm heart.
“I’m missing you, I’m
calling out for you, in all of my days. Even if I meet only with agonizing
memories, I gladly welcome them. When I turn around towards the voice that is
calling me, this empty street is already filled with your presence before I
know it.” –Sung Si Kyung, On the Street (거리에서)
This song is titled
“On the Street (거리에서)”, performed by South Korean male
balladeer dubbed as the Prince of Ballads,
Sung Si Kyung. The song was released on September 21st 2006 as the lead single
taken from the singer’s fifth studio album, “The Ballads”, which was released
later on October 10th 2006. Songwriter and music producer, Yoon Jong Shin, was
the one who wrote the ballad track. The album was a success and the song became
one of Sung’s signature songs. Lyrically, it speaks about the longing feeling
someone has as the flooding memories of moments they shared with significant
other in the past come to the surface when they walk down on the street they
used to walk on together. Sung’s fellow singer, Shin Young Jae of 4Men, performed “On the Street (거리에서)” on an episode of South Korean music television program, Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend
where Yoon Jong Shin came out as the legend. The episode was broadcasted
by KBS television station on March
18th 2017 and later by KBS World
channel on April 1st 2017.

There is always a day like this; a day that is so hard to live because we realize that there is this certain person we definitely cannot forget for the rest of our lives. Their presence that has long gone and our reviving loneliness greet us once again as we long for them. “Without you on this street, there is nothing for me to do. If I keep wandering around, I find myself bump into old memories every now and then. Illusions of your image and the sadness of my existence make me realize yet again that this love is difficult one to forget.” There is always a day like this; a day that is so hard to pass because we realize that there is this significant person that can’t be forgotten. The presence from the past and our reviving expectation greet us once again as we long for them. “When I arrive at the end of the street, I lean on the familiar wall. I still can see your presence when you confess your love to me under the light of the lamp post. The images of the past that rise up and the fluttering moment of my life make me realize yet again that it’s a moment that is too difficult to forget in one try.”
Some people are
willing to go back to the same place just to feel the memories flooding through
their veins. We do it in order to be able to feel once again; to feel the love
that once was there. As we walk down that street that is full of memories,
we’re wondering where that person is staying and what that person does for
living now. We’re wondering whether they’re thinking of us too and whether they’re
still searching for us too like we do. We stroll through the street hoping we
could find the answers. “Where do you
live now? How do you make a living now? It feels like someone might give the
answers if I kept walking. Do you still think about me? Are you looking for me?
It feels like someone might give the answers if I kept walking. Days when this
street was familiar, days when our steps were in sync, those days of our longed
past are coming back to find me again tonight.” And as the day gets darker
and the night comes, the images from the past moments greet us once again. We
find ourselves in a deep longing feeling for those moments and the person in
it.
Some people tend to
go back to some certain place in search for the memories that have been buried deep
down beneath. Though it brings along the longing feeling, it feels nice to meet
those memories. Though we are hurt by the emptiness, we’re gladly welcoming
those memories. Even if those memories are the hurtful ones, the ones that make
us anxious, they are warmly welcomed. “I’m
missing you, I’m calling out for you, in all of my days. Even if I meet only
with agonizing memories, I gladly welcome them. When I turn around towards the
voice that is calling me, this empty street is already filled with your presence
before I know it.” Though it hurts from waiting, we feel glad to encounter
those memories. We found them. And the empty street is suddenly filled with
countless presence of our loved ones. And it feels heartwarming inside. We know
that the person we long for so much is somewhere out there. Hence we’re
waiting, as we’re calling out their name to the sky. “With my bursting heart, I shout out to the night sky that I wait for
you on this street.”

People have their own way to deal with their longing feeling. Some people choose to go the same place over and over again. It’s a meaningful place where memories were built from moments that were shared together with the person they hold most dear. Some people do it in order to be able to find what they are always looking for; it’s the feeling of being fulfilled. And even though it’s just in a form of memories, they feel glad if they are able to find it. Some people do it since the day seems unbearable because of the longing feeling. And even though the hollow left by the absence of their loved one’s presence is hurting them, they feel glad if they could encounter it through memories. It gives them strength to continue living day by day. Those memories, whether it’s good or bad, whether it’s sad or joy, they welcome it with a warm heart. It fulfills them. It makes them whole again. And even though that person might not feel the same, it’s alright for them to feel it all by themselves. It’s just how they deal with the longing feeling.

about me? Are you looking for me? It feels like someone might give the answers
if I kept walking. Days when this street was familiar, days when our steps were
