Hoot

There is definitely a reason why people say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. They didn’t just spit out the words like that if there weren’t any reason at all. Indeed, though we are all human, men and women have some differences that cannot be denied. Hence the feminist movement departed with the spirit of appreciating those differences. Instead of seeing this world through a patriarchal perspective only, let’s see it through another perspective too: women’s. Though we may meet people from other gender who are very compatible with us and having the way of thinking that is alike with ours, we have to admit that there are some differences too we may find along the way. At times, men and women are vis a vis when it comes to how they perceive unfaithfulness. Sometimes, men find that the habit of flirting with girls other than their partner is not an act of unfaithfulness; that there is nothing wrong with that. Most of the time, women find that the habit is disturbing; a troublesome act that is disrespectful for women.

So I’ve heard that you fell deeply into another girl’s trap, didn’t you? End of excuses! You still can’t come to your senses, right? With that attitude, you won’t ever meet a good girl, forever. Don’t be mistaken, you’re not a cupid; yeah, you aren’t. –Girls’ Generation, Hoot ()

As a continuation of yesterday’s post, this time I am hit by the sense of revenge which makes me in the mood of writing about this song titled “Hoot ()”, still performed by Girls’ Generation. Following “Run Devil Run”, this dance pop track was released on October 25th 2010 as the lead single from the group’s third mini album, “Hoot () 009”. The EP was released on October 27th 2010. “Hoot ()” was composed and arranged by Danish songwriter-producers Martin Michael Larsson and Lars Halvor Jensen of Deekay, together with British songwriter Alexander James. It was originally titled “Bulletproof” and written with English lyrics. John Hyunkyu Lee then penned the Korean lyrics for the song. An official accompany music video was premiered on October 28th 2010, starring a member of boy group Super Junior, Choi Siwon. He appeared in the role of a Bond-like guy as a cameo, since the MV featured a parody of James Bond films’ gun barrel sequence with a runtime of 34 seconds, and sampled Monty Norman and John Barry’s score. Lyrically, “Hoot ()” follows a woman who is upset with her lover as he keeps on spreading charms toward other girls and doesn’t see the end of it. However, the overall mood of the song is very uplifting, in a sense that the woman accepts the upsetting situation with her own terms and condition.

It’s just a thing most women cannot easily understand. Yet though they understand, they just cannot easily accept it just like that. It is the men’s habit of easily flirting with any interesting girls they find. For men, perhaps it’s a casual act that doesn’t mean a thing for them. On the other hand, for women, even the simplest act could mean something. What makes women feel disappointed about that act? It is the feeling of being compared to other girls. It is the feeling of being inferior; if we’re not lacking then why do they still look at other girls? That effort they spend for flirting, why don’t they use it for being nicer towards us instead? Don’t they know that acting like this is making us feel upset? “The moment that I blink, you check it out again. Stop staring at the girls passing by! Acting like you didn’t hear, and that thorny snort; all of it is weird. How about being a little more nice to me? Your abrupt speech hurts so much. I really don’t like becoming used to it. All of it is making me upset. Where are you looking at when I’m just right here?”
Sadly, it’s just a thing most men cannot easily understand. Yet though they understand, they just cannot easily accept it. It is that their flirting habit is making women feel upset. For men, perhaps they just don’t feel that they hurt our feeling; they don’t know that it will hurt us and they don’t do it intentionally. And they don’t quite understand why we make such a fuss about it. On the other hand, no matter how open-minded we are, we cannot help but feeling disappointed every time thing like that happens. It just doesn’t make sense for us how they can do the same old mistake all over again when they knew it hurt us the first time they did it. Though it is unintentional for men, for women it’s just an act of spreading charms, like a cupid who shoots arrows toward all girls he sees, and that makes us sick of it. “So I’ve heard that you fell deeply into another girl’s trap, didn’t you? End of excuses! You still can’t come to your senses, right? With that attitude, you won’t ever meet a good girl, forever. Don’t be mistaken, you’re not a cupid; yeah, you aren’t.”
Because of those differences in the perspective of how men and women see this men’s flirting habit, in the end, women are forced to bend. It’s always a difficult position for us, since this world works under the cruel and unjust patriarchal system. It’s whether we open-heartedly accept that condition or walk away alone; either way it’s hurting us. Either way, it’s painful for us. Hence we build our own wall in order to protect our heart. And every woman has their own way to do that. “Because of you, my heart wears an armor, and now I’ll fight back. Your arrow is trouble; it aimed at me. You shoot, I hoot. Even if I’m hurt by your soaked-in-poison words, I gave you a second chance. You’re definitely trouble; you waited for the right time. You shoot, I hoot.” However, once a woman is hurt, she never forgets. She may forgive, but she definitely never forgets. “Even if you try to float on water, I’ll make you sink in the circle I’ve made. I’ll make you circling around. You just keep answering questions that I didn’t even ask, but I still won’t shoot an arrow like you did.”

After the sense of betrayal has faded, here comes the second wave which is the sense of revenge. And I always love this part. After shivering and bleeding for knowing the fact that my significant other is having another lover, I come to my senses; that’s when I can analyze the situation, understand it, and perhaps, finally, accept it. However, it doesn’t end with just an acceptance. I must do something for myself to be able to go on. I will make sure that he suffers the same as I did. No, I won’t do exactly the same as he did. Yet with anything I do, I will make sure he suffers the same amount of pain or maybe more. Revenge is indeed sweet. No, it doesn’t mean that I don’t love him. It’s just that I love him too much. I understand that he did it because he loves me so much too. Hence I’m just going to returning the favor. However though, I also understand that he did it mostly just because in order to fulfill his masculine identity and feed his ego; hence it doesn’t make sense for him if it hurts me. And since he did it anyway, he must know that I have to fulfill my feminine identity too. And I will do it my way. No, it will totally different than what he did. But yes, just thinking about it makes me excited.

Even if you try to float on water, I’ll make you sink. In the circle I’ve made, I’ll make you circling around. You just keep answering questions that I didn’t even ask, but I still won’t shoot an arrow like you did.” –Girls’ Generation, Hoot ()
