Where We Are

I used to be skeptical about love at the first sight. Well, I guess I am always skeptical about love at the first sight. How can we know that we love someone even before we get to know them? Moreover, how can we fall in love with someone whom we do not know? In my humble opinion, that is not love. That is just a mere attracted feeling rather than love. To call it love is overrated. It is all based completely on looks. And, hey, do not judge a book by its cover, though sometimes a cover tells so much about a book. I believed that was how the way it is until I met my significant other for the first time six years ago. It was not the first time we met, actually, but that was the first time I recognized him. And yes, a part of me still believes that it was purely just an attracted feeling. However, somehow there is another part of me that tells me it was more than that. It was the feeling that somehow we were connected to each other; that we were meant to know each other even before we met. Whether it was from the previous life or another timeline of this life or an alternate universe or another dimension, we were connected somehow.

I only look at things I want to look at. I only search for things I’m curious about, but it turns out to be you. It’s always you all this time.” –Jung Joon Young, Where Are You? (내가 너에게 가든 네가 나에게 오든)

My favorite Korean rocker, Jung Joon Young, lend his gorgeous voice for the soundtrack of 2016 popular drama series “W”, or also well-known as “Two Worlds”. At first, I did not really keen on this song. Even up until this point, it is not my favorite track of Jung. However, as I listen to it more often and as I understand more about the lyrics, I begin to fall in love with this song. It is titled “Where Are You? (내가 너에게 가든 네가 나에게 오든)”. The literal English translation of the title is “Whether I Go to You or You Come to Me”, but the official English title is “Where Are U”. The rock ballad track was released as “W OST Part 1” single album on July 27th 2016. Lyrically, the song depicts the meeting of two lead characters in the drama series, Kang Chul (portrayed by Lee Jong Suk) and Oh Yeon Joo (portrayed by Han Hyo Joo). Two of them live in two different worlds, yet when they meet, somehow deep inside they know that they belong to each other. Moreover, Kang Chul feels like Oh Yeon Joo is the person who holds the key of his life, just by their first meeting.

This life is indeed going in a very funny. There is this immensely famous saying: we never know what tomorrow brings. Well, that is true in some way. However, there are some people who are able to predict the future and foreseen what tomorrow may bring. No, we can never guess that we would meet our significant other and it turned out that he came from a different world. However, somehow when we meet them, we already know that we belong together. We got that feeling since the first time we met them. Hence life is funny, isn’t it? How could we feel connected to someone whom we’ve never met before? But that kind of thing happened for real. Could it be possible that there is another life where we were connected before? No one really knows why. “When you look down at the world from the sky, how would it look like? When you connect the dots of all the people, what will it become? Who knows that perhaps it will be the line that connects you and me? Who knows that you’re someone I’ll meet some day? We just don’t know; no one does.”
This universe is indeed has some mystery. It is never failed to surprise us. How could we sense a familiarity from someone whom we’ve just met? How could we feel like we’ve known someone for a lifetime when we actually just barely know them? How could we feel connected to someone whom we’ve never met before? How could we feel like we belong together with someone whom we’ve never known before? Could there be another ourselves in another world? Could we be connected to that person in another universe or in the previous life? No one really knows the truth. However, the truth doesn’t matter anyway, because eventually it is a wonderful feeling to meet someone like that in this life. For being able to know someone like that in this universe, it feels preciously amazing. “We kept meeting continuously, but we just didn’t see each other. Whether it was good or bad, it didn’t matter; we always passed by each other. Who know that perhaps we’re actually close and know each other really well? But we still don’t really know the truth; no one does.”
What do people look for while living life in this universe anyway? What do we search for? What do we want? What do we need? What is our purpose? What is the meaning of our existence? No one really knows the answer. Hence everyone lives for knowing the answer. I said that it feels preciously amazing to meet someone like that because meeting someone like that makes us feel like we finally got the answer of all those questions. Knowing someone like that that makes us feel like we are able to understand the answer for all those questions, eventually. It feels like that person is holding the key of our life; the key to understand our existence. Hence, it doesn’t matter if we’re worlds apart from that person. Whether we go towards them or they come towards us, we belong together at the same place. “I only look at things I want to look at. I only search for things I’m curious about, but it turns out to be you. It’s always you all this time. We’re walking through the same time as we’re connected to each other. Whether I go to you or you come to me, let’s be under the same sky.”

I always think that this universe is working in a funny and satirical way. I’m thinking about that more often lately. The more I get to know my significant other, the more I feel that our souls must be connected in the previous life. In other words, if there was an alternate universe somewhere out there, then I and my significant other must be connected. Looking at him feels like looking at my own reflection on the mirror. It feels like he is another version of me that comes from another world. And yes, he is indeed from a different world of mine. Though we have same frequency, read the same page, and speak the same language, we definitely came from two different worlds. And that is also why we are separated by some time, space, and distance currently. However, meeting him makes me feel like I got the answer to my existence. Knowing him makes me feel like I found the purpose and meanings to my life. Hence he is someone I just cannot let go. Henceforth, it does not matter whether I go to him or he comes to me, I will always make an endless effort for us to be together. I fight for our togetherness for always.

We’re walking through the same time as we’re connected to each other. Whether I go to you or you come to me, let’s be under the same sky.” –Jung Joon Young, Where Are You? (내가 너에게 가든 네가 나에게 오든)
