7 Mandatory Wedding Songs: Western Modern Edition
Dreamy lyrics promising the eternal love and happiness, sugar-like melody giving the cotton-candy-like feeling; that is all mandatory wedding songs are about. Indeed, everyone wants a sweet and heartwarming tune for their sacred ceremony. Everyone wants a happy and beautiful rhythm for their great moment. It is all about a promise until the day their life is through. It is all about a gratitude for the love that has been given and will about to be given. It is all about an expression of sincere pleading, asking for forever. It is all about a confession to bind the love in a sacred relationship called marriage. It is all about a loud saying of the thoughts they have about their feeling. It is all about a love, so sincere that it makes them accept their significant other for all of them. It is all about a love, so sincere that it will not last even for a thousand years. It is all my list of seven Western mandatory wedding songs, and this time is the modern ones, which was released after the year 2000. And yes, I frequently hear them at a wedding party.
7. NSYNC – This I Promise You
Starting the list on
number seven is a latin ballad R n’ B titled “This I Promise You”, performed by
the well-known American boy band during the early 2000s, NSYNC. The song was
released on November 25th 2000 as a single taken from the group’s second studio
album, “No Strings Attached”. Written by Richard Marx, this sweet ballad sung
in a gorgeous harmony by sweet boys of NSYNC, as the lyrics speak about someone
who promises their lifetime for their significant other. It would be a perfect
accompany for a wedding. Since on a wedding day, someone proclaims their life
for their other half and swears for a lifetime, not only to love but also to
protect them through the good and the bad.
“I’ve loved you
forever, in lifetimes before. And I promise you never will you hurt anymore. I
give you my word, I give you my heart, this is a battle we’ve won. And with
this vow, forever has now begun. Just close your eyes, each loving day. I know
this feeling won’t go away. Till the day my life is through, this I promise you.”
6. Bon Jovi – Thank You for Loving Me
Next on number six of
the list is a rock ballad titled “Thank You for Loving Me”, performed by the
legendary American rock band, Bon Jovi. The song was released on November 16th
2000 as a single taken from the band’s seventh studio album, “Crush”. Written
by the band’s front-man, Jon Bon Jovi, along with the famous ballad songs
writer, Diane Warren, this masculine ballad lyrically speaks the gratitude of
someone for the love they receive from their significant other. I personally
think that this heartfelt rock song is perfect for a wedding since on that day
people need to show their gratitude toward someone who is standing there as
their husband or wife for having loved them all this time and for willing to
love them in the days to come.
“Thank you for loving
me; for being my eyes when I couldn’t see ; for parting my lips when
I couldn’t breathe. Thank you for loving me. You pick me up when I fall down. You
ring the bell before they count me out. If I was drowning you would part the
sea and risk your own life to rescue me.”
5. Christina Perri & Ed Sheeran – Be My Forever
Up on number five of
the list is the sweet and lovely pop folk duet performed by American
singer-songwriter Christina Perri and English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran,
titled “Be My Forever”. Although it has never been released as a single, this
song was released on April 1st 2014 as a part of Perri’s second studio album, “Head
or Heart”. Written by Perri herself along with Jamie Scott, Perri said in an
interview that she wrote this song in a state where she was the most in love
she may have ever been in her whole life, as the lyrics contain a confession and
a plea for a significant other to be her forever. Hence this lovely and happy
duet song suits perfectly for a wedding since on a wedding day people expresses
their wish to be together forever with their beloved one.
“We’re on top of the
world. We’re on top of the world now darling so don’t let go. Hmm, I’ve got
something to say. You’re perfect in every way, I’m gonna shout it out. I’m
wanna tell you now. ‘Cause I know somehow it’s right. And oh we got time, yeah,
so darling just say you’ll stay right by my side. And oh we got love, yeah,
darling just swear you’ll stand right by my side. Be my forever, be my forever,
be my forever.”
4. Bruno Mars – Marry You
American
singer-songwriter, Bruno Mars, is on number four of the list with his sweet song
titled “Marry You”. The song was released on August 10th 2011 as a single taken
from the singer’s debut studio album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans”. Writte by
Mars himself along with Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine, the lyrics follow the story
of a spontaneous marriage; making this song famous as a proposal song. However
though, it is also famous to be played on a wedding, since it gives a vibe of a
crazy yet daring wedding feeling. And indeed, every wedding is crazy, right?
Since everyone who has a wedding should know the serious matter that they are
dealing with.
“It’s a beautiful night; we’re
looking for something dumb to do. Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you. Is it
the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice? Who cares baby, I think I
wanna marry you.”
3. Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
Opening the big three
of the list is the English singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran, with his heartfelt
love song titled “Thinking Out Loud”. This romantic blue-eyed-soul ballad song
was released on September 24th 2014 as a single taken from the singer’s second
studio album, “X”. Written by Sheeran himself along with Amy Wadge, this song’s
lyrics allude to an everlasting love that someone confesses like when they walk
down the aisle. I choose this song to be on number three on this list since it
sounds sweet on a wedding day; a moment when people confess their fidelity and
love for growing old together in a fairly conventional context.
“And I’m thinking about
how people fall in love in mysterious ways. Maybe just the touch of a hand. Oh
me I fall in love with you every single day. And I just wanna tell you I am. So
honey now, take me into your loving arms. Kiss me under the light of a thousand
stars. Place your head on my beating heart. I’m thinking out loud. Maybe we
found love right where we are.”
2. John Legend – All of Me
On the runner-up
position of the list is a heartwarming ballad performed by American singer John
Legend titled “All of Me”. The romantic R n’ B soul song was released on August
12th 2013 as a single taken from the singer’s fourth studio album, “Love in the
Future”. Written by Legend himself under the name of John Stephens along with
Toby Gad, this tender power ballad was dedicated to Legend’s wife, Chrissy
Teigen, as in the lyrics he serenades his eternal love for loving everything of
his significant other. Besides coming from a real-life romance, I choose this
song to be on number two on this list because it gives a sense of a true
romantic. It is deep but not cheesy. It is sincere but not corny. It is just
perfectly beautifully heartwarming.
“My head’s under
water, but I’m breathing fine. You’re crazy and I'm out of my mind. ‘Cause all
of me loves all of you; love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect
imperfections. Give your all to me, I’ll give my all to you. You’re my end and
my beginning. Even when I lose I’m winning. ‘Cause I give you all of me, and
you give me all of you, oh oh.”
1. Christina Perri – A Thousand Years
Finally here we come
to the top position of the list. On number one of the list is the American
singer-songwriter, Christina Perri, with her everlasting ballad song specially
made for a wedding titled “A Thousand Years”. It was released on October 18th 2011
as a single taken from the original motion picture soundtrack album of the 2011
romantic fantasy film “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1”. Written by
Perri herself along with David Hodges, this song was re-recorded as a duet with
Steve Kazee for the original motion picture soundtrack album of “The Twilight
Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” under the title “A Thousand Years, Pt. 2”. I
choose this song to be the number one on this list not only because it was
intentionally made for a wedding scene (of the famous lead characters couple of
“The Twilight Saga”, Bella and Edward), but also because of the song’s
heartfelt lyrics and melody. It cannot be denied that this song is a mandatory
song for a wedding nowadays.
“Time stands still. Beauty
in all she is. I will be brave. I will not let anything take away what’s
standing in front of me. Every breath, every hour has come to this. One step
closer. I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don’t be afraid, I have
loved you for a thousand years. I’ll love you for a thousand more. And all along I believed I would find you. Time has brought
your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I’ll love you for a
thousand more.”
