Welcome to November, one of my favorite months in a year. A new month means I must have a new theme. However, unlike before, I haven’t quite figured out what I want to discuss for this month’s theme. Therefore I would like to try a new thing for this month. It’s called the Random Play. Thanks to my partner for the inspiration; his random-yet-actually-not-that-random-ness has inspired me so much. So, for all of this November’s posts, I will post anything that cross my mind, literally anything. It could be on purposes, or just out of randomness, just like what it’s called: Random Play. Okay, for the first post, I would like to present a song titled “Human”, performed by Christina Perri. This song has been stuck inside my head for the last few weeks, since I feel related to it so much these days. Perhaps it’s true that we won’t get attached to a certain song until we feel related to its lyrics.
“I can fake a smile. I can force a
laugh. I can dance and play the part, if that’s what you ask, give you all I
am. I can do it. But I’m only human, and I bleed when I fall down. I’m only
human, and I crash and I break down.” –Christina Perri, Human
Released on November 18th
2013, “Human” was served as Christina Perri’s lead single taken from her second
studio album, “Head or Heart”, which was released on April 1st 2014. The power
pop ballad track was written by Perri herself along with Martin Johnson.
Perri’s sincere songwriting describes the vulnerability of being human, making
it feels relatable.

This song is about self-forgiveness. That’s what Perri always says every time she’s going
to perform “Human”. Lyrically, though it may sound heart-wrenching and somewhat
desperate, actually it speaks about self-acceptance, and also, like what Perri
has said, self-forgiveness. There are things we do for love, even if those
things suffocate us; hold our breath, bite our tongue, stay awake for days,
fake a smile, force a laugh, dance and play the part, give all of us. “I can hold my breath. I can bite my tongue.
I can stay awake for days if that’s what you want, be your number one. I can
fake a smile. I can force a laugh. I can dance and play the part, if that’s
what you ask, give you all I am. I can do it.” There are things we do for
love, even if those things may kill us or turn us into something we’re not. We
can do that. We can get through that. We can be anything. And those are just
things we do for love. “I can turn it on,
be a good machine. I can hold the weight of worlds if that’s what you need, be
your everything. I can do it. I’ll get through it.”
However, we’re only human. Every
human breaks at times. Every human bleeds when they got cut. Every human
scatters when they fall apart. Every human is in pain when they crash down. We
can’t help but getting hurt by words, even if those words are telling the
truth. Those are bitter truth; they’re casually cruel in the name of being
honest. “But I’m only human, and I bleed
when I fall down. I’m only human, and I crash and I break down. Your words in
my head, knives in my heart. You build me up and then I fall apart, ‘cause I’m
only human.” We’re human after all. We choose to fall deeper though we know
we’ll break down. We’re being hurt though we know we will eventually. But
that’s okay. We’re human, and feeling the pain is what makes us know we are
living. That’s just what we have to deal with. “I can take so much, ‘til I’ve had enough, ‘cause I’m only human, and I
bleed when I fall down. I’m only human, and I crash and I break down. Your
words in my head, knives in my heart. You build me up and then I fall apart,
‘cause I’m only human.”

A music video for “Human”
premiered on January 3rd 2014 and was uploaded to Perri’s official YouTube account the following day. It
was directed by Elliott Sellers. The song itself received critical acclaim,
with many critics applauded for Perri’s angelic vocal and also the confessional
nature of the lyrics. Indeed, sincerity could be felt no matter what form
it takes.
“I can take so much, ‘til I’ve had
enough, ‘cause I’m only human, and I bleed when I fall down. I’m only human,
and I crash and I break down. Your words in my head, knives in my heart. You
build me up and then I fall apart, ‘cause I’m only human.” –Christina
