Have you ever felt like, you
know someone, for quite a long time perhaps, yet somehow you always feel like
you don’t know that person quite well enough? Okay, perhaps that’s a hell of a
long question. Have you ever felt like, you know someone yet you feel like you
don’t know that person well enough to understand that person? Okay, perhaps
that’s still too complicated. Well, have you ever felt like, you feel connected
to someone yet somehow, or sometimes, you can’t read that person at all? I
have. And my assumptions are: (1) that person is a frozen cold, and (2) I can’t
melt his frozen heart. There’s this one song I remember whenever I feel like
being rejected and neglected and dejected by the person whom I truly care
about: “Frozen” by Madonna. I’ve made a deal with someone, some days ago, yet
somehow I really wish I still had the chance to melt his frozen heart. I want
him to know and understand: we have a choice to work this out.
“Now there’s no point in placing
the blame. And you should know I suffer the same. If I lose you, my heart will
be broken. Love is a bird, she needs to fly. Let all the hurt inside of you
die. You’re frozen when your heart’s not open.” –Madonna, Frozen
Released on February 23rd
1998, “Frozen” was the lead single taken from Madonna’s seventh studio album
titled “Ray of Light”. The electronic pop ballad track was written by the iconic
Queen of Pop herself along with
Patrick Leonard. The song was a worldwide chart success, being certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in April 1998,
only two months after its release.
First of all, I would like
to beg your pardon because I can’t explain the meaning of this song’s lyrics
without relating it to my current situation. Well, since it’s a Random Play, I guess that’s okay, right?
Lyrically, “Frozen” speaks about cold and emotionless human being, in general.
While in particular, it talks about cold-hearted man whom a woman holds most
dear. This man is too bounded to his own past it makes him blinded by. Therefore
he can’t see that there’s someone who offers him a way out and can ease his
burdens is standing just right next to him. “You
only see what your eyes want to see. How can life be what you want it to be?
You’re frozen when your heart’s not open. You’re so consumed with how much you
get. You waste your time with hate and regret. You’re broken when your heart’s
not open.” Everyone has a past, everybody makes mistakes; it’s reality.
Everyone has choices, everybody can move on; it’s reality. He’s frozen when his
heart’s not open to accept the reality he must face. Why don’t you just choose me?
“Now there’s no point in placing the blame. And you
should know I suffer the same. If I lose you, my heart will be broken. Love is
a bird, she needs to fly. Let all the hurt inside of you die. You’re frozen
when your heart’s not open.”
This man is too caught up within his own prison it makes him shackled by.
Therefore he can’t feel that there’s someone who offers him every effort to
heal his pain is standing by him right now. Therefore he can’t see that there’s
someone who offers him a chance to have a different ending for the future is
standing just right in front of him. “If
I could melt your heart, we’d never be apart. Give yourself to me; you hold the
key.” Perhaps it’s just me who can’t melt his heart. Perhaps it’s just me
who will never be good enough for him. Perhaps it’s just me who can’t get into
him. Perhaps it’s just not me. I can’t give him everything, but I can effort
him anything. And there’s one thing I know for sure: if I lose him, my heart
will be broken. Don’t you know that you
hold the key to choose to be with me all the way till the end?
The music video of “Frozen”
was directed by Chris Cunningham and premiered on February 16th 1998 on MTV. The song received acclaim from
music critics, being described as a masterpiece with its melodic beat and sound
were defined as ‘cinematic’. It’s a breathtaking melodrama. And indeed, this
song got me so since the first time I heard it, and that was already 17 years ago.
Geez. Classic.
