Our beloved September is coming to an end, and this is the last day for Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers. For me personally, it was a great month. Many exciting things happened this September. And it has been a pleasure to write about those amazing bands of brothers. Thank you Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, B.A.P, Brotherhoods in Comedy Movies, EXO, Big Bang, for colouring my life with your performances. I know one month is not enough to talk about greatest bands of brothers, since there are a lot more in this world. But there were only 30 days in September, therefore I promise there will be another month to talk about bands of brothers again, perhaps around next year (hopefully I’m still given the chance). Anyway, in order to conclude this month’s post with a maximum spirit, here I present a big hit from American rock band, Fall Out Boy, titled “Centuries”. Since those amazing bands of brothers will be remembered for centuries, let’s celebrate it. And of course, see you in October with the second part of Male Special. Stay awesome, great people!

“Some legends are told, some turn to dust or to gold, but you will remember me. Remember me for centuries. And just one mistake is all it will take. We’ll go down in history. Remember me for centuries.” –Fall Out Boy, Centuries

Released on September 9th 2014, “Centuries” was served as the lead single taken from Fall Out Boy’s sixth studio album, titled “American Beauty/American Psycho”. The alternative pop rock track was written by the band members, along with J.R. Rotem, Justin Tranter, Raja Kumari, and Michael Fonseca. It contains a sample of the song titled “Tom’s Diner”, performed by Suzanne Vega, in which was re-recorded by American singer, Lolo, for the track.

"Centuries" single cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

Fall Out Boy is a band with roller-coaster-like of history. They have their ups and downs, it is known. Lyrically, “Centuries” speaks about the fight to make a lasting artistic impression, which in the band’s case, their everlasting efforts to continue making music. It almost serves as a reminder for themselves to keep working towards legendary status. “Mummified my teenage dreams, no, it’s nothing wrong with me. The kids are all wrong, the story’s all off, heavy metal broke my heart. Come on, come on and let me in, the bruises on your thighs like my fingerprints. And this is supposed to match, the darkness that you felt, I never meant for you to fix yourself.” People say that legends aren’t born, they’re made instead. And what’s make a legend? It’s life with all of its broken dreams and false hopes that force people to reborn again and rise. “And I can’t stop ‘til the whole world knows my name, ‘cause I was only born inside my dreams. Until you die for me, as long as there’s a light, my shadow’s over you, ‘cause I, I am the opposite of amnesia, and you’re a cherry blossom, you’re about to bloom. You look so pretty, but you’re gone so soon.”
No one wants to be a cherry blossom, which beautifully blooms during a certain season but quickly fall off in another season. Changes terrify people, indeed. However, at some point, they who dare enough to change are actually legends in the making. They’re not a cherry blossom, they’re not a one-hit wonder, just because they’re being told that what they’re doing sucks, that they’re weird or whatever, that doesn’t mean that they’re not a leader that can create something new. As we all know, leaders attract a lot of arrows. “We’ve been here forever, and here’s the frozen proof. I could scream forever, we are the poisoned youth.” Anybody can become a legend. We are brought into the world once, but those are other people’s choices and dreams. Yet we are born again on our own. Our own passion and ambition will do us in, in the end. Sadly people tend to forget that for the most part, a lot of legendary tales start from humble beginnings. “Some legends are told, some turn to dust or to gold, but you will remember me. Remember me for centuries. And just one mistake is all it will take. We’ll go down in history. Remember me for centuries.”
A music video for “Centuries” was released on October 17th 2014. It features the band members in a gladiator-style battle, with a cameo from rapper Rick Ross and Canadian actor Jon Ambrose. “Centuries” received favorable reviews from music critics, as well as performed well on music charts and succeeded commercially. In May 2015, it was certified three-times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. So much for a grand comeback, guys! Rock n’ roll!

“Some legends are told, some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me, remember me for centuries
And just one mistake is all it will take
We’ll go down in history, remember me for centuries
Hey ya, oh hey, hey ya, remember me for centuries

Mummified my teenage dreams, no, it’s nothing wrong with me
The kids are all wrong, the story’s all off, heavy metal broke my heart
Come on, come on and let me in, the bruises on your thighs like my fingerprints
And this is supposed to match, the darkness that you felt, I never meant for you to fix yourself

Until you die for me, as long as there’s a light, my shadow’s over you, ‘cause I

We’re human and it’s natural for us to have fears. It’s reciprocal with hopes and it’s inevitable. We have fears because we have hopes; we have hopes therefore we have fears; yeah, something like that I guess. Even when it comes to love. In particular, when it comes to love. Love is hope, as well as fear. It’s complicated. And even though people are searching for simplicity, they’re also subconsciously attracted to complexity. What can give people more complexity than love? I guess there’s nothing. This leads to today’s song for Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers, which is also the last selected song of Big Bang, titled “Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요)”. Well, even superstars and those people on top are having their fears toward love. Even those people under the spotlight are just human.

“Let’s not fall in love, we don’t know each other very well yet. Actually, I’m a little scared, therefore I’m sorry. Let’s not make promises, you never know when tomorrow comes. But when I say that I like you, I really mean it.” –Big Bang, Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요)

On August 5th 2015, Big Bang released “E”, the last single album before releasing the full album “MADE”. “Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요)” was released as the second single from “E” (eighth single in total from “MADE” series). The pop hip-hop ballad track was written by G-Dragon and Teddy. GD and Teddy put a narration part near the end of the song, where there’s a female voice saying words in Korean means “You’re always like this, a selfish bastard.” In the middle of it, there’s an unclear male voice. The fascinating thing is, we can clearly hear what the male voice is saying if we play the song backwards, and he says in English, “It’s not you. It’s me.”

"Let's Not Fall in Love" single cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

I really love the lyrics of “Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요)”. It is so, hmmm, how do I put it, real? Yeah, I guess everybody has ever felt things written in these lyrics at some point in their lives. It is when you feel attracted to someone, you get closer to that person each day, you feel excited yet at the same time you feel scared too. You don’t want to spoil the moment, the present time, therefore you repress all kinds of attachment that might harm the future. “Don’t ask me anything, I can’t give you any answer. We are happy just as we are right now. Don’t try to own me, let’s just stay like this for a while. Why should we make it more painful?” Hence, who are we trying to deceive here? Everyone else, that person, or just ourselves? Love hurts at some point, it is inevitable. Yet that can’t be a reason to push everyone away, just because we feel like we don’t deserve to fall in love. We can’t keep anyone from harm. “Don’t smile at me. If I get attached to you, I’ll get sad, because I’m afraid that pretty smile will turn into tears. Don’t try to trap us in the word of love, because it is greed that can’t be fulfilled.”
Love brings not only happiness but also sadness, it is known. Like two sides of a coin, they both come together in one package called love. People are aware of the risks, yet they just can’t live without it. It’s like eating spicy food; you know your stomach will get sick, yet you eat it anyway, since it’s delicious. It’s like watching horror movie; you know you will get scared, yet you watch it anyway, since it’s exciting. “Goodbyes after our frequent meetings, repetition of broken hearts, I can’t find a purpose in these foolish feelings. Mistakes with the mask of love, all the feelings are the same now. But in this moment, I want you to stay.” No matter how tired people get with the game of love, they will never get enough of it, it is given. No matter how many times people say that they have had enough of complication, they will always look for it, it is in their subconscious. We need someone to stay, after all. “At first, it was half excitements and half worries. But in the end, it became an obligation, trials and errors. Day by day, I get nervous, your innocence is too much pressure on me. But tonight, I want you to stay.”

"E" single album cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

There are many reasons why people have those fears and give up any possible way of expecting something. One of them is the past. Perhaps they’ve been hurt before, and been broken, which in result they tend to run away when things get hard or complicated, or deep. Perhaps they’re just afraid of themselves. “Don’t expect too much from me, I don’t wanna lose you either. Before things get too deep, before you get hurt, don’t trust me.” People find it hard to open up their hearts, so they tend to choose an easy way by repressing any needs regarding to love; sublimation. No strings attached, no promises, but is it no cry, really? “Let’s not fall in love, we don’t know each other very well yet. Actually, I’m a little scared, therefore I’m sorry. Let’s not make promises, you never know when tomorrow comes. But when I say that I like you, I really mean it.” Love takes courage. We can’t promise forever happiness, yet we can effort to fight together even during the sadness. It’s the essence of life anyway, right? Despite all fears that it brings, we can’t just give up hopes. And the question is, when will you stop being a selfish bastard?

Taeyang in "Let's Not Fall in Love" music video

A music video for “Let’s Not Fall in Love (우리 사랑하지 말아요)” was premiered on Mnet on August 4th 2015. The video showcased personal stories of all Big Bang’s members, where they’re getting cozy and comfortable hanging out with a certain girl yet unwilling to take the relationship into the next level of commitment. Usually, I’m not a music-video person. However, I can’t help but falling in love with this one. All members look so gorgeous and unbearably cute! Well, all four of the promised single albums had already released. We’re still waiting for the full studio album to be released, soon, hopefully. And I’m willing to bet anything that it will turn out magnificent!

Big Bang is back, and they’ve taken us in a roller-coaster of emotions with the self-contemplation “Loser”, the sensual flirt “Bae Bae”, and the happy-go-lucky “We Like 2 Party”. Now, brace yourself, for all broken-hearted people, this next track is so far the saddest one that Big Bang has ever released in their entire career. Well, life is indeed going up sometimes and going down on another time. Sadly, people always say that we never know what we have until we lose it. But, is it really working that way? Because, if it really is, then life would feel so lonely, isn’t it? However, sometimes universe works in a funny way, because apparently, in the midst of loneliness, most people realize what they really need for life. So here it is, the fourth selected Big Bang’s hit for Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers.

“If you, if it’s not too late, can’t we get back together? If you, if you’re struggling like I am, can’t we make things a little easier? I should’ve treated you better when I had you.” –Big Bang, If You

“If You” got me since the first time I heard it. This pop ballad track was released on July 1st 2015 as the first single from “D” single album (the fifth single in total from the “MADE” series). For the song is the saddest Big Bang has ever released since their debut back in 2006, the group decided not to make a music video out of it, in order to make its listeners focus on the music and lyrics. The lyrics were single-handedly penned by the group’s leader G-Dragon, who also composed the music along with P.K and Dee.P.

"If You" single cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

Lyrically, “If You” is heartbreakingly melancholic. It speaks about the mixed feelings of a painful break-up: hurt, loneliness, regret, sadness, and all of those emotions we never known existed until we know how a true broken heart really feels. “She is leaving, and I can’t do anything about that. Love is leaving, like a fool, I’m only blankly standing here. I’m looking at her, getting farther away, she becomes a small dot and then disappears. Will this go away after time passes? I remember the old times, I remember you.” When a love is leaving, sometimes we just can do nothing in the state of shock. When a love has gone, most of the time we just can’t help but reminisce all those memories shared. Because when a heart breaks, it doesn’t break evenly. “How about you? Are you really fine? Guess our break up is setting, I should forget you but it’s not easy. I’m looking at her, getting farther away, she becomes a small dot and then disappears. Will I feel better if I meet someone else? I remember the old times, I remember you.”

"D" single album cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

A broken heart will lead us to a wonder that, whether we’ll be okay as time passes by, whether we should try to meet someone else. But I personally think that it’s better if we try to mend the broken heart alone, no matter how long it will take, before we meet someone new. Because, like people say, never knew what we had until we lost it. So it’s better to contemplate first before moving on. “On days where thin rain falls like today, I remember your shadow. Our memories that I secretly put in my drawer, I take them out and reminisce again by myself. Why didn’t I know, about the weight of sadness that comes along with breaking up?” And when it gets too hard, when the lingering feeling gets too much unbearable, when you feel like it’s killing you inside, but when it’s possible, try to negotiate. I personally believe that anything can be negotiated, even love. “If you, if it’s not too late, can’t we get back together? If you, if you’re struggling like I am, can’t we make things a little easier? I should’ve treated you better when I had you.”

Daesung during "If You" live performance in Bangkok "MADE Series World Tour"

Having touched everyone’s heart, “If You” gained critical acclaim, particularly for G-Dragon’s writing for its lyrics. Billboard stated that it was the group’s most instantly striking pieces in years. For me personally, “If You” is a breathtaking masterpiece, in which even T.O.P is literally singing in this song, instead of rapping. This song is going down in history. On September 19th 2015, female singer IU sang a cover version of “If You”, which went viral on YouTube and received positive reviews for her mesmerizing rendition.

After taking us to the dark side of life through “Loser”, where Big Bang make their point that people who stand under the spotlight are just human beings (somebody may not have a friend and somebody may not have love), and then bringing us to the erotic side of romance through “Bae Bae”, where the group seduces and flirts and mesmerizes us with their enchantment, now they’re giving us “We Like 2 Party”. In this track, Big Bang present us the holiday atmosphere with all the fun and of course, friendship! There’s no better vacation trip than the ones we have together with our beloved friends. Yup, this time the group is (finally) gathering together in a very casual yet so much fun music video. And here I present to all VIPs around the world, the third Big Bang’s hit for Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers, “We Like 2 Party”.

“Because we’re young, we’ll regret tomorrow. It’s a little dangerous, aye man, you better slow it down. For today that will never come again, let’s cheers to the sky.” –Big Bang, We Like 2 Party

Released on June 1st 2015, “We Like 2 Party” was served as the second single released from “A” single album (fourth single in total from the “MADE” series). Another song from the single album is “Bang Bang Bang”, which was released back-to-back on the same day with “We Like 2 Party”. The song is a power pop acoustic track, with its lyrics penned by Teddy, Kush, G-Dragon, and T.O.P, and its music composed by Teddy, Kush, G-Dragon, and Seo Won Jin.

For a single grown-up like me, there’s no better holiday than to spend it with my beloved friends. Whether we go somewhere far together or we just stay at home all day to have movies-marathon or just talk and laugh, anywhere and anything is fine as long as we do it together. Lyrically, “We Like 2 Party” expresses the happiness feeling of being able to gather again with beloved friends, after a while coping up with works and daily routines. “My friends come out again today, man how’ve you been? What’s up? Aye, wanna give me a drink here? Whoever drinks last, there you go. Just mix it all up the champagne, and if you know what I’m saying. I look at your wrist, time is gold. It’s a hot Friday, you dig.” And for most of the times, going out to have a little fun is the best choice to spend the weekend. “Let’s play with fire for the first time in a while. Wanna get out of here right now? It’s noisy in here, the atmosphere is fantastic. Fearless hotties are getting drunk. Opus One’s scattered here and there, but make the end sweet, d’Yquem. Don’t you back out, you’re going with me to heaven. Being sober is against the rules.”

"A" single album cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

Being together with our beloved friends is the sweetest escape. Once in a while, we need this kind of thing to keep us sane in the midst of insanity life forces us into through our everyday life. Talking about anything, laughing off of everything, eating and drinking until our stomach bursts. For the night that will go down in history, for the day that will never come again, we just let it all out. We’re young, wild, and free, and the exactly same day and night like this won’t happen ever again, so we better enjoy it while it lasts. “Because we’re young, we’ll regret tomorrow. It’s a little dangerous, aye man, you better slow it down. For today that will never come again, let’s cheers to the sky.” For a group of friends, when even just one person is missing makes it feels incomplete, so don’t leave anyone out. For the sake of everlasting friendship we’ve been sharing all these years, and for another years to come, let’s cheer it up. “Without you, I’m going crazy. DJ, play a love song. I’m not drunk, I’m just missing you like crazy, so DJ, play a love song. We like to party till the sun rises above our heads. We like to party till the sun rises in the west.”

Seungri in "We Like 2 Party" music video

A music video for “We Like 2 Party” premiered on Mnet on June 4th 2015. It was shot on Jeju Island, one of the most infamous tourism spots in South Korea. I love the video! It gives out the casual holiday and exciting party mood as well as natural feeling, since the group shows a comfortable, carefree, and playful sides, unlike their other videos. Listening to “We Like 2 Party” can’t help but remind me of those good times spent with my beloved friends. Priceless!

“Without you, I’m going crazy. DJ, play a love song. I’m not drunk, I’m just missing you like crazy, so DJ, play a love song. We like to party till the sun rises above our heads. We like to party till the sun rises in the west.” –Big Bang, We Like 2 Party

When “Loser” is a deep song with such heavy messages for Big Bang’s comeback, the group also gives their beloved VIPs “Bae Bae”. When “Loser” is taking us to a wonder about self-reflection toward life, “Bae Bae” will take us to another level of romance. In the K-pop universe, we might have found other songs performed by other male groups that speak up about worship and adoration toward women, beauty, and love. However, Big Bang bravely present another way to do that through “Bae Bae”. Frantically yet beautifully, they bring up the most sensitive issue in man-woman relationship: sex appeal. Yup, the grown men are now openly talking about sex. It’s inevitable that indeed appearance is the first thing a man sees from a woman. And actually, a woman does see that too from a man at first. It’s the trigger to an attraction, the keeper to affection. So here it is the second selected Big Bang’s new hit for Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers, “Bae Bae”.

“Baby baby, can you stay beautiful just like you are right now? So my heart can race even after time passes. Baby baby, don’t wither. This is all for the selfish me. You have to stay just as you are right now.” –Big Bang, Bae Bae

“Bae Bae” was served as the second single released from “M” single album on May 1st 2015, digitally back-to-back with “Loser”. The hip-hop R n’ B track was written by G-Dragon and T.O.P along with YG Entertainment’s composer Teddy. This song has an element of trap melody in it, which represents the ‘naughty’ side of the song very well. At first, I was pessimistic that I could enjoy “Bae Bae” as much as I enjoyed “Loser”. But when I heard the chorus part, I scratched that. I just fell in love in an instant for this song, perhaps even deeper than “Loser”. The melody just got stuck in my head like a sticky rice cake.

Lyrically, “Bae Bae” talks about how the physical attraction could give a flame toward a relationship. Well, some women might find it quite offensive towards sexuality, but since I love Big Bang, I don’t find it any offensive at all (okay, I’m in a repressive desublimation here). Matter of fact, I find it quite romantic. “I’m in love, I’m blind with love. No pants on with a white shirt. Are you a human or an angel? Oh Jesus, you’re dazzling, (need a) sunglass. My mind is so out of it. I’m possessed by you. Blood is rushing to that one place again. It’s dangerous, you’re so dangerous. Save me, call the police.” Why is it romantic? Because in particular, it’s about how a man is kneeling down before a woman’s beauty. It’s how the woman’s sex appeal can make a man so drunk, blind and going wild, crazy. Admit it, we, women, we like to dominate. And if we can do it with our goods, why not? “Your eyes are pretty like a deer, my princess. When you laugh at me, it looks so chic. Are you crazy? You’re a natural beauty, so unique, so unique. My perfect dear, be my muse. We’re so comfortable together. I’m gaining so much weight. My body wraps around yours so perfectly. You’re forever twenty-five to me, won’t ever change, five times five.”

Even man-woman relationship is about a power relation. And for women, beauty is a weapon; a mean to gain power over men. “Baby baby, can you stay beautiful just like you are right now? So my heart can race even after time passes. Baby baby, don’t wither. This is all for the selfish me. You have to stay just as you are right now.” People say that a beauty, in terms of appearances, is artificial. That it doesn’t last forever unless it has an inner beauty from within. Okay, let’s not take this that far. Sad but true, physical appearance is the first gate of human’s attraction. And don’t underestimate its power to maintain the strength of feelings. It’s not a sin for a man wanting his lover to stay beautiful, and it’s natural for a woman wanting to stay beautiful for her lover too. “I’m a man who’s holding a pretty flower; a man who’s holding a flower called you, whom everyone loves. I’m drunk with your scent. I’m getting hazy again. Don’t get plucked away, please.” As long as it gives satisfaction towards both parties, it’s fine. As long as it keeps the chemistry as sticky and yummy as a rice cake, it’s beyond okay. Who doesn’t like a rice cake, anyway? I love it. It’s addictive, and it’s good for your health. “Like a rice cake, our chemistry.”

T.O.P in the "Bae Bae" music video

A music video for “Bae Bae” was premiered on Mnet on April 30th 2015. It was directed by Seo Hyun Seung, who previously directed Big Bang’s big hit “Fantastic Baby”. The video gained critical acclaim with Billboard said it’s the most sexual K-pop videos from a male group ever, and Vulture stated, “Big Bang is the best at blending aesthetics, and the music video is a prime example of how they jump from romance-novel realness to the Mad Hatter-like psychedelic bumblebee in.” “Bae Bae” is crazy yet satisfying me in every sense that a song can satisfy people, like an addictively delicious rice cake melting in my mouth.
