Song of a Friend

Here comes another sleepless night. A night of the nights where all of those reminisced moments suddenly come into mind and won’t go away until the dawn is breaking. A night of the nights where pictures of a certain person suddenly flash before eyes and keep haunting until the morning comes. A night of the nights where the past suddenly feels like it’s coming back into life and won’t be disappeared until the sun rises. And on a night like this, tonight, a song of a friend keeps on playing inside the head and ringing in the ears. A song that tells a story, so meaningful that hearing it could bring back the memories of those moments. A song that portrays a feeling, so heartwarming that listening to it could soothe the cold and lonely heart. A song about someone, a friend, so precious that remembering it could make us cherish every moment spent together.
“Cause
Penny and me like to roll the windows down, turn the radio up, push the pedal
to the ground. And Penny and me like to gaze at starry skies, close our eyes,
pretend to fly. It’s always Penny and me tonight.” –Hanson, Penny & Me
A
song titled “Penny & Me” is today’s song for Moments Of Our Lives part 2. The pop rock hit was performed by
American band, Hanson. It was released on March 2004 as the first single from
the band’s third commercial studio album, “Underneath”. “Penny & Me” was
written by the Hanson brothers who are also the members of the band: Isaac,
Taylor, and Zac. The name for the song is dedicated to a work colleague of the
Hansons’ father who became infatuated with a work colleague named Penny, and
composed a song to express as much, which he performed at a work event in April
1987 whilst extremely inebriated.

Nothing but a sleepless night makes the past a sweet place to visit. Past brings memories, and memories bring moments. The lyrics of “Penny & Me” tells about a reminisce of someone so precious from the past. For him, in this song, it’s Penny. For you, it could be anyone. For me, it’s certainly someone. Someone whose face will always be the first to come whenever we hear a certain song, everytime a sleepless night comes. Someone whom we spent countless memorable moments with. “Cigars in the summertime under the sky by the light, I can feel you read my mind. I can see it in your eyes under the moon, as it plays like music every line. There’s a rug with bleeding dye under the fan in the room, where the passions burning high. By the chair with the leopard skin under the light, it’s always Penny and me tonight.”
“On the plane step up
with both my feet, riding in seat number three on a flight to NYC. Got my
bean in a coffee cup next to my seat, catch the view and another good book to
read. Sitting at home over the friendly skies, missing her eyes, it’s always
Penny and me tonight.”And even after so many sleepless
nights have passed, those moments are still clearly carved in our memories. And
we still remember. Every single thing, every detail. Every smile, every
feeling. Every dream, every journey. Everything, vividly. “Staring at a million city lights, but it’s still Penny and I all alone
beneath the sky. Feel the wind brushing slowly by, if I could soar I’d try to
take these wings and fly away to where the leaves turn red. But no matter where
I am instead, singing along to feeling alright, or making it by under pink
moonlight, it’s always Penny and me tonight.”
I
ever wondered how could a certain someone be very precious for us, that the
presence will always come visiting during these sleepless nights though they
have gone for so long. Perhaps it’s the dreams we’ve shared together. Perhaps it’s
the moments we’ve been through together. Perhaps it’s the times we’ve spent
growing up together. “Penny likes to get
away and drown her pain in lemonade. Penny dreams of rainy days and nights up
late by the fireplace, and aimless conversations about the better days.” And
just like this, that person comes again into mind in this dark and long
sleepless night; friend from the past and distant yesterdays for the night. “Cause Penny and me like to roll the windows
down, turn the radio up, push the pedal to the ground. And Penny and me like to
gaze at starry skies, close our eyes, pretend to fly. It’s always Penny and me
tonight.”
A music video for “Penny & Me” was released with Chris Applebaum as director and featured actress Samaire Armstrong. Though this song was doing well on the music charts across the world and achieving some success, “Underneath” became their lowest-selling official release. They were just numbers though. Anyhow, “Penny & Me”, for me personally, became a very personal song that I will always remember. It’s a kind of song that makes me drifting away whenever I hear it, especially on a sleepless night like this. Well, this is just my sleepless night, one of the many others. Night gathers, and now my watch begins.
