Farewell

Farewell is undeniably an unavoidable part of our lives. Eventually, there are moments in life where we have to bid farewell to the ones we hold most dear. Life itself contains of many little fragments of a farewell towards every moment we spend. Because the same exact moment can’t be repeated twice. It only happens once. People say that farewell isn’t only an ending; that it’s a sign of the beginning of something new. However, every moment we have will always be a part of our lives, and it lives in a memory, a farewell is no different. We might reminisce it in the future. It might haunt us for the rest of our lives. We might regret it. It might taught us about a thing or two. But we can do nothing to go back in time and change what has happened. So, instead of letting it strangle us, embrace it. The past remains the past. We can learn from it, but we cannot change it.
“Once
in a while, I might think of you, although you were a cold-hearted person. The
memories of our love, I might not be able to forget them.” –Patti Kim, Farewell (이별)
It’s
the last day of Moments Of Our Lives part
2 (my my, how time flies) and today’s song for our very last day of it is a
Korean classic hit titled “Farewell (이별)”. The ballad hit was performed by
Korean legendary female singer, who was first Korean to perform at the infamous
Carnegie Hall in New York, Patti Kim. Originally titled “I’ll Think Of You”, it
was released in 1972 and became Kim’s biggest hit that hinted the breakup of
her and her then-husband, Gil Ok Yun. The album was sold about 100,000 copies
at the time. In 1973, “Farewell (이별)”
also inspired a movie with the same title starred Kim Ji Mi and Shin Seong Il.
The movie topped the box office with over 140,000 viewers. The song was served
as the encore song of Kim’s retirement concert; a concert that wrapped up her
career of 55 years as a singer.
The
lyrics of “Farewell (이별)”,
like its title, tell us about the feeling someone has about a farewell, though
the word ‘farewell’ itself isn’t mentioned at all throughout the song, but
that’s the essence of it; a song about farewell that depicts the feeling of it.
It’s not about grievance; it’s about acceptance. “Once in a while, I might think of you, although you were a
cold-hearted person. The memories of our love, I might not be able to forget
them.” A moment of farewell will always be a part of our lives. Moments
before farewell will always be memories for the rest of our lives. “At some point, I might miss you, whenever I
look at the full moon up there. On those nights, I might remember the promises
we made and regret the passed old days.”
In
a distant future, we might go back into those memories from time to time. No
matter how long time has passed, those memories might come before our eyes at
times. For there were many moments have shared together, for there was a deep
feeling has given to each other. “Over
the mountains, we were separated far and far away. Over the sea, our hearts
drifted apart from each other.” No matter how far we’ve been separated,
those memories will always be there. They’re there to give us strength to stand
up, to give us reason to move on, to make us learn; if we embrace it, accept
it, reflect from it. Old stories are like old
friends. You have to visit them from time to time. Everything happens at
its time; a farewell too.
Up
until today, “Farewell (이별)”
had been performed twice in the South Korea’s entertainment music program,
“Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”. The first one was during the second
part of two-episodes Patti Kim special.
Then, it was performed by Davichi’s member, Kang Min Kyung. The episode 44 was
broadcasted by KBS television station on March 31st 2012, and by KBS World
channel on April 21st 2012. The latest one was during the first part of
two-episodes “Show Show Show: Return of
the Stars” special, when it was performed by K.Will. The special episodes
were also known as the Grand Prix Final,
for the performers that have already won trophies were there to compete again.
The episode 189 was aired on KBS television station on March 7th 2015, and on
KBS World channel on March 28th 2015.
