Come Take My Hand

Not all memories are good. Not all moments people have are pleasant. There are good times and bad times. There are bad moments which make bad memories. Everyone has their own dark ages. Time that leaves a scar, that will always be painfully remembered, that will always haunt and strangle. Time that make people fall in the darkness. Like a flower that has lost its colour. Being withered and died. And all that it needs is a hand, to come and take it. A hand that comes with a hope. A hope that breathes the life into it and saves it from the death. There are bad times, bad moments, bad memories; however, they eventually become beautiful in the distant future, if we could take a look at it from a certain perspective, if we would embrace it, and turn it into a strength that could rise us up. Because life is a series of regression to the mean.
“It’s
burning up, all of the truth that has been hidden within lies. It’s being
silenced, all the dreams that have been broken by the small lips.” –Xia
feat. Tablo, Flower (꽃)
Today’s
song for Moments Of Our Lives part 2
is a Korean song titled “Flower (꽃)”.
It was performed by Kim Junsu, better known for his stage name Xia, a member of
vocal trio JYJ, whose three members were all ex-members of the infamous Korean
idol group, DBSK. This song was served as the title song for Xia’s third solo
studio album of the same name. The album was released on March 3rd 2015, with
the music video for the lead song was premiered on Mnet on March 2nd 2015. For this track, Xia collaborated with the
prominent Korean rapper, Tablo of the hip-hop group Epik High. “Flower (꽃)” uses elements of
hip-hop, musical theatricality, orchestral pieces, and opera sound. It was
written by Xia himself, along with Tablo and Kim Tae Won.

We
all have dark periods in our lives. However, even a beautiful flower like lotus
can be grown in a sludge. The lyrics of “Flower (꽃)” speak about the
story of someone who has been kicked down and is trying to get back up,
reaching for something that he can hold onto. “It’s burning up, all of the truth that has been hidden within lies.
It’s being silenced, all the dreams that have been broken by the small lips.
Nobody can help me, take me out from these rotten memories.” The
desperation and deep-rooted scars, which may not be visible, become apparent
through ourselves. Some of us are strangled by it and can’t move on. Some
others are haunted by it and being paralysed. Like a flower being trampled in a
hail rain. “The cruelly trampled flower,
looks like love is pain, like broken wings. The countless scars that imprison
me, they’re like sad thorns that dig into me.” All we need is faith of a
hope, even just a little bit, to be able to get up again.
“It’s all right, take
my hand, in this arrogant world, even a little mistake becomes a big sin. Don’t
cry, you’ve become the world’s hot topic, then you turned into ash before they
take away each piece of you.” Even a little hope can
breathe life into a piece of soul that seems to be sunk in depression and
desperation. And a little hope can come from other people’s experiences of
rising above their struggles and coming out on the other side. If they can do
it, why can’t we? We’re all human after all. “Your life, your soul, your world, they cannot kill it. Look at me,
I’ve died but I opened my eyes again, I killed it. The darkness swallowed me,
but now I’m swallowing you. Piercing through the storm of snow, a deeply rooted
flower blossoms.” Even a beautiful flower like lotus can be grown in a
sludge. And nothing lasts forever, even the hail rain on a winter. Every
darkness means to be lighted. Every hurdle means to be struggled out. “This is the truth; it may seems like it’s
all over, but there’s not a single door in this world that could smother you. Everyone
goes through this, I tell you it’s okay. Even if it’s a small light, the
darkness can’t swallow it.”
Don’t
let the dark ages trap you in the darkness forever. Believe that God doesn’t
give (cobaan) to the people more than what they could bear. Indeed, everything
has two sides of it, like a coin. It can bring sorrow or joy, pain or bliss,
tears or laughters. But things can’t always be really good or really bad. It
will eventually come to the middle again, seeking for a balance; a regression
to the mean. So don’t grief. Shit happens in life, just flush it and move on. “‘Cause love is pain, like a candle in the
rain.” And while you are down, it’s okay to seek for a hand to help you
getting up again. I remember a thing said by David Gauntlett, that we need
trust in everyday life and relationship, or we would be paralysed by thoughts
of unhappy possibilities. Indeed, the address of happiness is coming from
inside of our own selves. “Come take my
hand, drench my dried up heart. Come take my hand, till the end. So I can live
for you again, please take my hand.”

Despite the lack of television promotion for this album, it debuted at first place on the Gaon Chart, and the title song “Flower (꽃)” gained positive review by music critics. Seoul Beats wrote that, this track is like nothing they have seen before in K-pop, an incredibly detailed piece of art, with every aspect being well thought out and relevant, filled with deep emotions, jaw dropping aesthetics, and a symbolic message. I was thrilled at the first time I heard this song. Xia’s impressive vocal and Tablo’s breathtaking rap fit perfectly together. With both artists having come out of dark periods in their lives, the background stories were perfectly laid to suit the song lyrics. From this song, we can see (read: hear) Xia’s being reborn again, not only as a person, but also as an artist. And he’s ready to rise, like a blossoming flower.
