Graduation

Some days ago, I attended my little sister’s graduation day. And just like that, it was suddenly bringing back memories of my own graduation. Again, I was astonished by how the time flies. Seems just like yesterday I attended my own graduation, but now it’s already 10 years since junior high graduation, 7 years since senior high graduation, and 2 years since college graduation. Thinking back at my whole life so far, I can feel that it’s all worth it when I know I’ve made friends for a lifetime. Friends that, even though we’ve gone separate ways, the time and space barriers are never matter when we meet again. Our jokes are still the same and our frequencies are never changed. And for me, rather than the certificate we got (though that’s important too) from a graduation, friends for a lifetime are something more precious. Graduation isn’t about a mere paper, it’s more about the moments we shared with people at that place; a place we’re about to leave, people we’re about to say goodbye, moments we’re about to have as memories.
“And
so we talked all night about the rest of our lives, where we’re gonna be when
we turn 25. I keep thinking times will never change, keep on thinking things
will always be the same. But when we leave this year, we won’t be coming back.
No more hanging out, cause we’re on a different track. And if you got something
that you need to say, you better say it right now, cause you don’t have another
day.” –Vitamin C, Graduation
(Friends Forever)
Today’s
song for Moments Of Our Lives is a
classic titled “Graduation (Friends Forever)”. It was performed by American
singer, Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick, better known for her stage name, Vitamin C.
The pop R n’ B song was first released on April 4th 2000 and served as the
third single release from her self-titled debut album.

Graduation isn’t about a mere paper we got for finishing a study and having done being a student. It’s more about the moments we shared with people at that place; a place we’re about to leave, people we’re about to say goodbye, moments we’re about to have as memories. It’s quite fascinating that in the “Graduation (Friends Forever)” song lyrics is mentioned that ‘where we’re gonna be when we turn 25’, because I’m now 25. So, recalling this song right now is like a deja vu. Some years ago I sang this song with friends and wondered how we would be when we turn 25, and now we’re really 25. Breathtaking. “And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives, where we’re gonna be when we turn 25. I keep thinking times will never change, keep on thinking things will always be the same. But when we leave this year, we won’t be coming back. No more hanging out, cause we’re on a different track. And if you got something that you need to say, you better say it right now, cause you don’t have another day.”
Graduation
is like a bookmark. It divides one chapter and another of our lives. And life,
it keeps moving forward. It makes people eventually have to say goodbye to a
chapter in order to start a new chapter. And when a graduation comes, we can’t
help but reminiscing all moments we’ve been through with our friends. And we
can’t help but wondering about the future we will face soon, or perhaps a
distant future when we’re a lot older than now. Half exciting, half terrifying.
And suddenly, all of those moments are flashing in front of us like a movie.
And we hold onto them while preparing ourselves for another chapter to begin. “Cause we’re moving on and we can’t slow
down. These memories are playing like a film without sound. And I keep thinking
of that night in June, I didn’t know much of love but it came too soon. And
there was me and you, and then we got real blue. Stay at home talking on the
telephone. And we would get so excited and we’d get so scared. Laughing at
ourselves thinking life’s not fair, and this is how it feels.”
“So if we get the big
jobs and we make the big money, when we look back now, will our jokes still be
funny? Will we still remember everything we learned in school? Still be trying
to break every single rule? Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?
Can Heather find a job that won’t interfere with her tan? I keep thinking that
it’s not goodbye, keep on thinking it’s a time to fly, and this is how it
feels.” Back then when I had those graduations, I didn’t
know how it really feels to finally see those moments from a future. I could
only wondering what would I be, what would my friends be, how would we’re be.
That’s natural, I guess. And now, since I already have had them and finally
live in yesterday’s future, I understand how it feels to have reunions; to see
those graduation moments from a future. And it’s always fascinating me how me
and my friends are doing now. Fascinating that we’re now living in the time we
wondered back then. And with some friends, goodbye isn’t really a goodbye.
Because when we meet again, everything still feels the same.
“Will we think about
tomorrow like we think about now? Can we survive it out there? Can we make it
somehow? I guess I thought that this would never end, and suddenly it’s like
we’re women and men. Will the past be a shadow that will follow us around? Will
these memories fade when I leave this town? I keep thinking that it’s not
goodbye, keep on thinking it’s a time to fly.”
Graduation is not a goodbye. It’s a time to fly. Memories may be fading, but it
stays forever deep inside our hearts and minds. Thinking back at my whole life
so far, I can feel that it’s all worth it when I know I’ve made friends for a
lifetime. And I’m very grateful for having them. Everytime we have a reunion,
it feels like we’ve never been apart. We still laugh over same jokes. We still
think in same frequency. We still be there. So if you’re still in school or
college right now, live the moments and make friends for your lifetime. It’s wonderful,
and it’s worth it. “As we go on, we
remember all the times we had together. And as our lives change, come whatever,
we will still be friends forever.”
