They
say that everything is fair in love and war. Well, ironically, indeed love is
the most exciting war in human being’s life; a psychological war between men
and women. As I am a woman, of course most of my point of views represent my
clan. No, I won’t talk about gender in a scientific term, because I don’t have
the qualification for doing so. However, what I will talk about is more like
what I got from daily life experiences, whether it’s my own or others. Love and
relationship bring headache and heartache, at some point. Sometimes, women have
a less ‘freedom’ in it. Why? Because we, women, always think so much and most
of time think too much. We worry about so many things and scared of some things
that actually not yet happen but might happen. We’re burdened by our own
thoughts and anxiety when all we have to do is actually just as simple as
talking it out, asking it out, letting it out, freely.
“Love
is full of sweetness on my right. It’s all poison on my left. Which one is the
mantra for me? You could make a choice for us to be together.” –Nicky
Astria, Why (Mengapa)
The
infamous legendary Indonesian female rock vocalist, Nicky Astria, is the singer
of today’s song for Free Spirit,
titled “Why (Mengapa)”. The rock ballad song was first released in 1995 as the
lead single of her twelfth studio album, “Negeri Khayalan”. It was written by
Ly, Baiduri, and Yusac, with music arrangement from Ian Antono.
In
love and relationship, women should be brave to speak up their mind. Not only
about things that we feel good about it, but also the bad ones. The lyrics of
“Why (Mengapa)” tell about a woman who demands for the answer of her important
question towards the man. Those questions come from the anxious mind of the
burdened feeling and bothered heart, because her love is taken for granted,
because she’s in pain, because it feels so unfair. So she gathers up the
courage to ask. “Why do you leave? Why do
you let down? Why do you break? Why do you attaint? Why do you hurt? Why do you
make pain? Why do you give? Why do you forget? Why do you put an end? Why do
you give back? With a shivering soul, I raise the questions.” In love and
relationship, it takes two to tango. And when a heart breaks, it doesn’t break
even. So she gathers up the bravery to demand. “I don’t want you leave, I don’t want to be let down, don’t want love
to be tainted, don’t want it to be broken. I don’t want to be hurt, I don’t
want to be in pain, I don’t want you give if you forget. I don’t want to be
ended if you give back. With an empty feeling, I’m asking for an answer.”
Sometimes
women feel uneasy to demand for anything toward her beloved ones. They feel
afraid to be demanding, in case that will urge the man to leave. But hey, it’s
alright to be demanding. If the love is real, we deserve to demand for
everything. It’s not about being selfish or arrogant, but it’s about being able
to compromise, to make a choice, to stand up for love. “Love is full of sweetness on my right. It’s all poison on my left.
Which one is the mantra for me? You could make a choice for us to be together.”
It’s alright to tell how we really feel, how we want this love to be, where we
need this relationship to go. It’s alright to speak up what we like and
dislike, what we expect from this love to be, where we hope for this
relationship to go. “You can bring
happiness, cheering. You can bring joy, charming. I want to love and be loved
by you. I want you to be by my side everytime I wake, forever.” In love and
relationship, there are always two sides of it; sad and joy. Spiritful women
are they who are willing to fight for their love. And as long as we have hopes,
there’s no such thing as impossible, because there’s no false hope. “Hope the love blooms. Hope your love will
be close to me. Romance will call regardless of time, enthroned in your heart
and mine.”
Being
dubbed as the Lady Rocker of
Indonesia, Nicky Astria had her peak in mid 1980s. Though “Why (Mengapa)” was
released after the peak of her musical career, the hits became one of her
signature songs that still is well-known until now. I personally is a big fan
of her, and this song is my favourite, definitely, it’s everlasting.
“You
can bring happiness, cheering. You can bring joy, charming. I want to love and
be loved by you. I want you to be by my side everytime I wake, forever.”
–Nicky Astria, Why (Mengapa)
“Mengapa kau pergi?
Mengapa kau kecewakan? Mengapa kau hancuri? Mengapa kau menghinakan?
(Why
do you leave? Why do you let down? Why do you break? Why do you attaint?)
Mengapa kau sakiti?
Mengapa kau melukakan? Mengapa kau memberi? Mengapa kau melupakan?
(Why
do you hurt? Why do you make pain? Why do you give? Why do you forget?)
Mengapa kau akhiri?
Mengapa kau memulangkan? Dengan getaran jiwa ku kemukakan pertanyaan
(Why
do you put an end? Why do you give back? With a shivering soul, I raise the
questions)
Tak ingin ku kau pergi,
tak ingin ku dikecewakan, tak ingin cinta dinodai, tak ingin dihancurkan
(I
don’t want you leave, I don’t want to be let down, don’t want love to be
tainted, don’t want it to be broken)
Tak ingin ku disakiti,
tak ingin ku dilukakan, tak ingin ku kau beri bila kau melupakan
(I
don’t want to be hurt, I don’t want to be in pain, I don’t want you give if you
forget)
Tak ingin ku diakhiri
bila kau memulangkan, dengan perasaan hampa ku meminta jawaban
(I
don’t want to be ended if you give back, with an empty feeling, I’m asking for
an answer)
Di kananku cinta penuh
bermadu, di kiriku racunmu
(Love
is full of sweetness on my right, it’s all poison on my left)
Kalimah sakti yang mana
untukku? Dapat kau membuat pilihan agar kita dapat bersama
(Which
one is the mantra for me? You could make a choice for us to be together)
Kau bisa membahagiakan,
menceriakan, kau bisa menggembirakan, mempesonakan
(You
can bring happiness, cheering, you can bring joy, charming)
Aku ingin dicintaimu dan
mencintai, aku ingin bila terjaga kau di sampingku selamanya
(I
want to love and be loved by you, I want you to be by my side everytime I wake,
forever)
Semoga cinta bersemi,
semoga cintamu kan dekat padaku
(Hope
the love blooms, hope your love will be close to me)
Asmara kan mengundang
tanpa mengira waktu, bertahta di hatimu dan hatiku
(Romance
will call regardless of time, enthroned in your heart and mine)”

Im really in love by your posts! I couldnt agree more with your text. Even though Im a man, I fight with this doubts and insecurity to show my feelings. I guess the ones who has much to say and offer are the ones who struggle more to show them. Its kind an insane internal war where we constantly lose for ourselves. We prefer being in doubt than taking the risk of failing. Its such a suffocating situation...

Hi Jorge!
DeleteThanks for the very insightful comment. I particularly like the part "We prefer being in doubt than taking the risk of failing" Yup! Can't agree more! That's what usually happen though sometimes we do that without even realizing it. :"
