The Poem of Life
There
are times when I want to just...disappear. Well, literally, disappear.
Disappear like being invisible or something; a condition when no one can see or
find me yet I’m still here somehow. Those are times when I don’t want to talk
to anyone, be seen by anyone, meet anyone; I just don’t want to be bothered.
Those are times when I want to be free, in loneliness; to find peace, in
solitude. Time when I want to think about anything without being distracted by
work or people or everything that could come in between. Those are times when
inspirations usually come to mind; reflection, redemption, resolution; a poem
of life. For me, those are peaceful times, full of freedom; a freedom of
silence.
“In
this time I want to be drifted again, flying high up in the clouds, leaving the
Earth right here.” –Ahmad Albar, The
Poem of Life (Syair Kehidupan)
Today’s
song for Free Spirit is coming from
one of Indonesian icons of free spirit rock star, Ahmad Albar. The song is
titled “The Poem of Life (Syair Kehidupan)”, and it was first released in 1980
as the title song of his second solo studio album of the same name. The rock
acoustic ballad song was written by Areng Widodo, with music and arrangement by
Ian Antono, whom the latter was also a guitarist of Albar’s legendary rock
band, God Bless.
There
are times when people want to disappear. Perhaps in a deserted place, among the
crowd, or maybe just inside their own minds. The lyrics of “The Poem of Life
(Syair Kehidupan)” tell about it; when a person lost inside his own thought.
And sometimes, people can disappear at night, in their solitude. “In this time I want to be drifted again,
flying high up in the clouds, leaving the Earth right here. In this time I want
to create again, I will write a song while reminiscing your face.” Night is
indeed a magical timing. It’s when a certain memory can come out just like
that. It’s when a certain wish can pop up just like that. It’s when someone’s
mind can be really free, in the depth of their thought. It’s when someone’s
soul can be really free, in the thought of their lives. “A long dimly lit night, in the darkness I hear a poem of the song of
life.”
I
know that this month’s song should be cheerful as it is the month of Free Spirit. But, come on, the freedom
of our spirit could also be celebrated in solemnity, right? Moreover, “The Poem
of Life (Syair Kehidupan)” is one of my favorite Ahmad Albar’s songs. Call me
old fashioned, and indeed Albar was coming from my parent’s generation, but
yes, I grew up with his songs, and this one is everlasting. Albar’s vocal is
the best, still, and it will always be.
“A
long dimly lit night, in the darkness I hear a poem of the song of life.”
–Ahmad Albar, The Poem of Life (Syair
Kehidupan)
“Di saat ini ingin ku
terlena lagi, terbang tinggi di awan tinggalkan bumi di sini
(In
this time I want to be drifted again, flying high up in the clouds, leaving the
Earth right here)
Di saat ini ingin ku
mencipta lagi, ‘kan kutuliskan lagu sambil ku kenang wajahmu
(In
this time I want to create again, I will write a song while reminiscing your
face)
Malam panjang
remang-remang di dalam gelap daku dengarkan syair lagu kehidupan
(A
long dimly lit night, in the darkness I hear a poem of the song of life)”
