Lying on the Sea
Sea
is the greatest place on the Earth for a runaway. Well, mountain is the second
place. Anyway, there’s this something about the sea that could drown people in,
well, both literally and metaphorically. There’s something strange that could
free every strangled feeling; something charming that could mend every burdened
mind; something heartwarming that could soothe every broken soul. Sea is the
safe haven for the empty feelings, for the daunted minds, for the lost souls.
When the whole world shakes you and breaks you and tears you apart and crumbles
you down, go to the sea. Perhaps you’ll find yourself again there. Or at least,
you’ll find peace, or anything you need to free yourself from everything.
“The
ten thousand dazzling lights wane, while the tide keeps rising. Even the stars
fall asleep on their own, and my mind flows along like water.” –The
Treble Clef, Lying on the Sea (바다에 누워)
Today’s
song for Free Spirit is a Korean
classic, titled “Lying on the Sea (바다에 누워)”, which was performed
by the legendary folk duo, The Treble Clef. It was first released in 1985 when The
Treble Clef received the Grand Prize at
MBC College Music Festival with this
song. Because the song was easy to sing, with the exciting rhythm and amazing
vocals, it instantly became a huge hit. By raking number one position on K-Pop Top 10 for five consecutive weeks,
this song made The Treble Clef win the Golden
Cup.
The
sea breeze brings a strange atmosphere toward people. For some people, who are
lost, whose soul is broken, it could soothe them; give them a warmness they
don’t even understand where it does come from. It’s what the lyrics of “Lying
on the Sea (바다에
누워)”
tell about. “I was born as one self. I
lie down on the sea, and look at the sun going down. The waves are drenched in
the sun, and they are washed away like tears.” For some people, going to
the sea gives a peace for their mind somehow. For them, breathing the air of
the sea gives a warmth for their heart some way. For them, being on the sea
washes away their pain and loneliness. “The
ten thousand dazzling lights wane, while the tide keeps rising. Even the stars
fall asleep on their own, and my mind flows along like water.” For some
people, the sea is freedom, to let it all go and worry about nothing. For them,
the sea is home, to let it all free and do not bother about anything. “Should I lie down on the sea and become a
lonely bird? Does the port know how deep the water is?”
Until
this article is written, “Lying on the Sea (바다에
누워)”
had been performed three times in the South Korea’s entertainment music
program, “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”. The first one was during the “Duet Mission” on the 6th installment of
“Immortal Songs 2”, when this song was performed by Changmin, member of male
vocal group 2AM, who collaborated with Lee Hyun, member of vocal group 8eight
(the two later formed a vocal duo called Homme). They left a great impression
by literally lying on the stage floor during the opening of their performance.
The episode was broadcasted by KBS television station on July 9th 2011, and
later was aired on KBS World channel on July 30th 2011.
The
second time “Lying on the Sea (바다에
누워)”
performed on “Immortal Songs 2” was during the second part of the “K-Pop Top 10 Summer Hits” special
episodes, approximately a year after the first one. It was performed by
Ryeowook, one of the main vocalists of Korean prominent idol group, Super Junior.
His performance stood out because of the opera rock ballad arrangement. The
60th installment of “Immortal Songs 2” was broadcasted by KBS television
station on July 28th 2012, and later was aired on KBS World channel on August
18th 2012.
The
latest one, about two years after that, “Lying on the Sea (바다에
누워)”
was performed by JK Kim Dong Wook on the 156th installment of “Immortal Songs
2”. It was the “Summer Special Part 1
with Guest”, when the male soloist brought over the Korean prominent
rapper, MC Sniper, to perform along with him. Their performance was on my list
of 7 Most Fantastic Winning Performances on “Immortal Songs 2” of 2014.
The episode was broadcasted by KBS television station on July 5th 2014, and
later was aired on KBS World channel on July 26th 2014. All of the three
performances were taking place during summer, well, indeed, a song about sea
and free spirit suits very well with the summer season.
