Intuition
Intuition
(noun) according to Merriam Webster
is a natural ability or power that makes it possible to know something without
any proof or evidence. Or else, it’s a feeling that guides a person to act a
certain way without fully understanding why. Intuition, a feeling, something
that we think as a magical phenomenon. However, in psychological terms, hunches
are formed out of our past experiences and knowledge. Therefore, while relying
on gut feelings doesn’t always lead to good decisions, it’s not
nearly as flighty a tactic as it may sound. Our intuition is always there,
whether we’re aware of it or not. All we got to do is to follow it, wherever it
may lead. Free your mind, free your soul, don’t let the complicated world
strangle you, don’t let the miserable life trap you, follow your heart, your
intuition.
“Follow
your heart, your intuition. It will lead you in the right direction.”
–Jewel, Intuition
Today’s
song for Free Spirit is a song titled
“Intuition”, performed by American singer-songwriter and musician, Jewel
Kilcher, or also known for her stage name as Jewel. This song marked Jewel’s
musical transition from her traditional folk style to a more pop oriented sound.
This was when Jewel decided to make a radical departure from her previous folk-oriented
musical efforts and recorded a dance album. Despite the switch of sound style,
the song is lyrically similar to her previous work. It has a number of
references to popular culture, including mentioning celebrities such as
pop star Jennifer Lopez, model Kate Moss, actor Charlie Sheen,
magazines, film culture, and commercialism.
Time
moves forward, and so people keep on moving forward. Society evolves, and so
the world changes. Amidst all of complications that life serve us, there’s
always madness. Madness is everywhere. Among all of those madness things, is
there one thing to believe? “Intuition” tells what to believe: intuition. For
some people, the world nowadays seems so absurd. It’s chaotic. And popular
culture makes it worse. Well, just some of it, of course. Why? Because the
limit between what’s good and bad, morally, seems fading. “I’m just a simple girl in a high tech digital world. I really try to
understand all the powers that rule this land. They say Miss J’s big butt is
boss, Kate Moss can’t find a job. In a world of post modern fad, what was good
now is bad.” All of these new things, changes, for some people in a certain
generation, they find it hard to accept. In terms of relationship, moreover,
it’s getting more complicated. Drama is everywhere. Simplicity is in the past.
Complicated is the new trend. And everyone seems to follow the trend.
“You look at me but you’re not quite
sure, am I it or could you get more? You learn cool from magazines, you learn
love from Charlie Sheen. If you want me, let me know, I promise I won’t say no.”
Life is a never ending game, indeed, but apparently some people take it too
seriously, and perhaps, too commercially and too materialistically. Love is
commodity. Well, in the media, it works. But in reality, it doesn’t work that
way. “You got something that you want me
to sell, sell your sin, just cash in. You got something that you want me to
tell, you’ll love me, wait and see. If you want me, don’t play games, I
promise it won’t be in vain.” Let’s bring it to its root; love is not
something to sell. Let’s take it to its origin; love is about the feeling, the
intuition. So, just follow your heart. It won’t lost you, as long as you could
be true to yourself. “It’s not hard to
understand, just follow this simple plan. Follow your heart, your intuition. It
will lead you in the right direction. Let go of your mind, your intuition. It’s
easy to find, just follow your heart.”
A
music video was released for “Intuition” and directed by Marc Klasfeld.
The song itself was written by Jewel, along with Lester Mendez. The dance pop
song with electro-sound was released on May 6th 2003, as the first and lead
single taken from her fourth studio album, titled “0304”. It starts off with a
French accordion and then experiments with dance-oriented beats
with subtle urban influence which is using synthesizers. The
song received mostly positive reviews from contemporary music critics. What
Jewel did, jumping ship like that, was a huge and brave thing to do. I salute
her for that. Moreover, for this beautiful song. Nicely swift. It’s good to
follow your heart and never be afraid to try something new, indeed, right?
