The Day You Went Away
At
some point in life, there’s always somebody for someone, somebody who sets the
bar, somebody who’s irreplaceable, somebody who, no matter how great everybody
after them, they’re not them. At some point in life, people stumble, lose their
way, and sometimes, the stumble, the loss, is a great one. It happens when they
lose that somebody whom they found love in; Lost
and Found. Someone I respect has said to me, that sometimes people need to
get lost in order to be found. Do we? Eventually, people get lost because they’re
afraid of their own pains. And when people are lost, it doesn’t mean they’re
lost forever. Sometimes, what they need is just a little help; a help to be
found again. Because, at some point in life, there’s a day when we’re going to
be lost; the day when we lost the one we hold most dear.
“Did I
lose my love to someone better, and does she love you like I do? I do, you know
I really really do.” –M2M, The
Day You Went Away
Today’s
song for Lost and Found is the infamous
song –especially for 1990ers who grew up in South East Asia like me– from
Norwegian female pop duo, M2M, titled “The Day You Went Away”. It was first
released on March 20th 2000 and served as the third single from their debut
album, “Shades of Purple”. It later became the title song for the duo’s best-of
album, “The Day You Went Away: The Best of M2M”. It was a greatest hits album
which was released by their record label in 2003 after they disbanded.
At
some point in life, there’s a day when we’re lost. That’s the day when we lost
the one we hold most dear. That’s “The Day You Went Away” tells about. About
the love that even after it has ended a long time before, it still lingers
there, haunting and daunting. “Well I
wonder, could it be when I was dreaming ‘bout you, baby, you were dreaming of
me. Call me crazy, call me blind, to still be suffering is stupid after all of
this time.” About the love that when it ended back then, the memory of it
will never fade with time. “I remember
date and time, September twenty second, Sunday twenty five after nine. In the
doorway with your case, no longer shouting at each other, there were tears on
our faces.” And after all of this time, it’s still the love that makes us
wonder; where did everything go wrong? What did we do wrong? How did it end up
like this? “Did I lose my love to someone
better, and does she love you like I do? I do, you know I really really do.”
And after all of this time, it’s still the love that makes us long for it, as
so precious as a love can be, as so precious as we can never have ever again.
“And we were letting go of something special,
something we’ll never have again. I know, I guess I really really know.” And
all of the misery, all of the pain, all of the regret, it all started from that
day, the day when the love has gone. “Well
hey, so much I need to say, been lonely since the day, the day you went away.
So sad but true, for me there’s only you, been crying since the day, the day
you went away.” People say that we don’t know what we have until it’s gone;
that regret is always coming afterwards, that longing is always haunting in the
end. But, how would we know what we have found when we never lost it? That’s
just the way things happen. That’s just the way life is. And when every feeling
is piling up inside our hearts, it feels like it’s going to explode, to words
and tears. And we have so much we need to say to that person, but we never get
to say it, since they’ve gone away. “Why
do we never know what we’ve got ‘til it’s gone? How could I carry on the day
you went away? Cause I’ve been missing you so much I have to say, been crying
since the day, the day you went away.”
“The
Day You Went Away” was written, arranged, and composed by M2M themselves; Marit
Larsen and Marion Raven; along with Matt Rowe. It’s a traditional pop song with
medium tempo. It has an enchanting melody, with Marit and Marion’s soft voices
add the bitter-sweet emotion in it. The song was very popular in my country
back then, and apparently in Europe and Asia. It became one of M2M’s signature
songs. Even up until nowadays, “The Day You Went Away” is still as addictive as
always. It’s everlasting.
