Hear the Love

Everything comes with consequences, so does love. With all the things that ones could find in love, it comes with all other things that ones could lose in it; Lost and Found. People say that love is real when it brings happiness. Some other people say that love is real when it’s painful. I’ll go with the ones who say that love is a powerful and magical force that could give us both; pain and pleasure, happiness and sadness. Sometimes when we see someone keep the love and hide it from the person they love, we wonder why they do that, we wonder why they keep hurting themselves by doing that. The thing is, dealing with love is not an easy feat. Love comes with consequences. And not everyone is ready to face what’s coming after, when the person they love could hear what their heart is feeling.
“Why
is it just my love that is late? Why is it just my love that is hard? Although
I’m right in front of you, although I’m right beside you. You’re my whole world,
you’re the only one I see, but I always look away whenever I’m in front of you.”
–Kim Taeyeon, Can You Hear Me ...? (들리나요…) [OST. Beethoven Virus]
“Can
You Hear Me ...? (들리나요…)”
is today’s song for Lost and Found.
This ballad track was performed by Kim Taeyeon, the leader and also lead
vocalist of Korean girl group, Girls’ Generation. She sang it for the 2008 MBC
drama series titled “Beethoven Virus”, as the main theme song. It was her
second solo and soundtrack, following the release of “If (만약에)”. “Can You Hear Me
...? (들리나요…)”
was released on September 19th 2008 as a part of “Beethoven Virus OST” album.
Its popularity was high through the roof, earning her the YEPP Popularity Award in 2008
Golden Disk Awards. Taeyeon said in an interview that this song was one of
her most difficult to sing, explaining that the introduction had to be delivered
as if someone is talking rather than singing.

We never know whom we will fall in love with. Sometimes, someone falls in love with a person whom they spend most of their time with, perhaps their best friend. When that happens, there’s this anxiety; an anxiety of inability to hide and stop the feeling. The lyrics of “Can You Hear Me ...? (들리나요…)” tell about that feeling. “Even though it hurts just a little bit, tears keep falling. My heart screams out everytime I’m passing by in front of you, or being beside you. You’re my whole world, you’re the only one that I want, but I can’t breathe whenever I’m in front of you.” It’s easy to fall in love with someone we’ve known so well, but it’s not that easy to deal with the feeling. They’re so close yet seem so far. They’re the one that we want, but we can’t just tell them that. They’re the one that we see, but we can’t just show them that. And it’s worse when we know that they’re into someone else. “Why is it just my love that is late? Why is it just my love that is hard? Although I’m right in front of you, although I’m right beside you. You’re my whole world, you’re the only one I see, but I always look away whenever I’m in front of you.”
“As if you and I
weren’t destined to be, as if this was just a fleeting moment; next to you, who
could just let me go so easily, I take a step closer, little by little,
although I can’t move at all.” Unconsciously, every
little thing that we choose to do and make, every little step that we take, it
leads us closer to them. Although we understand, it won’t take us anywhere. “As if you were my very last, as if it were
my very last moment; next to you, who could just let me go so easily, I take a
step closer, little by little, although I can’t move at all.” Consciously,
all the things that we decide to do and make, all the steps that we take, they
bring us closer to them. Although we realize, they won’t take us anywhere,
because our love is unrequited.
“If I could just look
upon you even from a long distance, that’s what you call love.”
Is that what they call love? Is it enough just by watching over them from a
far? Is this love meant to be? Is this feeling just a passing moment? We know
it’s real when it’s painful. “You make me
restless, you make me cry; like a fool, like a child, I just want to laugh it
off instead. The closer I get to you, although I get more terrified, I guess I
just can’t stop this love.” We hide the pain with smile, as we keep on
telling ourselves that everything will be just fine. We hope we won’t look
pathetic, as we keep on trying hard to hide the feeling inside. Yet love is not
a thing you can easily switch on and off just like that. And deep inside you
wonder, can they hear what your heart says? “If
perhaps this yearning, this longing, when it gets to you, when you can hear it,
please just pretend like you don’t know. The closer I come to you, although I
get more terrified, I just can’t stop this love.”

As well as its soundtrack, the drama series “Beethoven Virus” was very popular back then. Actor and singer Jang Geun Suk, who also starred in “Beethoven Virus”, sang the male vocal version of “Can You Hear Me ...? (들리나요…)”, which was titled “Can You Hear Me Part 2 (들리나요 Part 2)”. Jang’s version was released on November 6th 2008 as “Beethoven Virus OST” single. His version has acoustic arrangement with only piano, strings, and guitar accompaniment. It also has an intro. Meanwhile, Taeyeon’s version is a traditional ballad with orchestra sound as the background. Both versions have its own charms, and both Taeyeon and Jang are having mesmerizing vocals that suit well with the sweet-sorrow melody of the song. Choosing which one’s better is like choosing between grilled fish and fried fish; so difficult!
