It’s the last day of February; the month of love. Love; one word four letters. Easy yet not so easy to be said. We’ve been talking about love during this whole month, and now we reach the last post. Time flies, indeed. I’ve mentioned before, that love is an easy word yet not easy one to be said. It’s amazing how a single word could leave a very deep impression in human’s life, right? Moreover for people who have been broken before, falling in love is a big deal; moreover again, to admit that they fall in love is a way big deal. However, there’s one thing I’ve learnt from my own experiences; that when love comes to you, no matter how devastated you were from the pain and loss of the past, then it’s the right time for you to open your heart and accept the love. Never deny, never run, never hide. Let’s be brave to say the words, because it’s okay to fall in love; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“All of the lights land on you, the rest of the world fades from view. And all of the love I see, please please say you feel it too.” –Christina Perri, The Words

As the last post for this month, I will present to you a song by American singer-songwriter, Christina Perri, titled “The Words”. The ballad track was released on January 26th 2015 as the third single served from her second studio album. The album, titled “Head or Heart” was released on April 1st 2014.

"Head or Heart" album cover - source: en.wikipedia.org

“The Words” is a song about a woman confesses her love towards the man she loves, and at the same time convinces him, that it’s okay to fall in love. “And all of the noise I hear inside, restless and loud, unspoken and wild. And all that you need to say to make it all go away, is that you feel the same way too.” People say that there will be sunshine after the rain; and that there will be new love after a broken heart, as long as we’re brave enough to open our hearts and say the words. “And all of the steps that led me to you, and all of the hell I had to walk through. But I wouldn’t trade a day for the chance to say, my love, I’m in love with you.” They’ve both been hurt before, and she knows so well that it’s not easy to open up their heart again after all of the pain. They’re both fragile now, and she knows as well that it’s scary to break down the wall that they’ve built surround their heart. “I know that we’re both afraid. We both made the same mistakes. An open heart is an open wound to you.” However, love is there to mend, and now it’s in his hand to make a choice. The art of letting go the past is never easy, but she convinces him to rest assured; that her love is his to choose, that her love can be his sanctuary, that the love won’t hurt them. So just say the words; it’s love, and it’s okay. “And I know, the scariest part is letting go. Let my love be the light that guides you home. And I know, the scariest part is letting go, ‘cause love is a ghost you can’t control. I promise you the truth can’t hurt us now, so let the words slip out of your mouth.”

The music video for “The Words” was directed by Philippe Paillé and starred Colin O’Donoghue. Perri personally wrote the song herself, along with David Ryan Harris and David Hodges. The heartwarming melody and beautiful lyrics make this song a perfect company for the closing of this month of love.

“And in the wind of a heavy choice, love has a quiet voice. Still your mind, now I’m yours to choose.” –Christina Perri, The Words

“All of the lights land on you, the rest of the world fades from view
And all of the love I see, please please say you feel it too
And all of the noise I hear inside, restless and loud, unspoken and wild
And all that you need to say to make it all go away, is that you feel the same way too

And I know, the scariest part is letting go, ‘cause love is a ghost you can’t control
I promise you the truth can’t hurt us now, so let the words slip out of your mouth

And all of the steps that led me to you, and all of the hell I had to walk through
But I wouldn’t trade a day for the chance to say, my love, I’m in love with you

I know that we’re both afraid, we both made the same mistakes
An open heart is an open wound to you
And in the wind of a heavy choice, love has a quiet voice
Still your mind, now I’m yours to choose

And I know, the scariest part is letting go
Let my love be the light that guides you home”

Have you ever wondered, where do we find love? Whenever I see a couple of lovers, whether it’s on the street, holding hands, walking side by side, laughing at each other’s jokes; I’ve been wondering, how did they fall in love in the first place? How did they meet? How did they know each other? How did they find each other? Have you ever wondered the same? Apparently it’s not us who find love; it’s love that finds us. Yes it always finds its way. It comes to us, and when it’s too hard to hold it back, just say it out. It’s alright to think out loud, because it’s love. Apparently it’s the left unsaid words that stand tall between two people who belong to each other. So if you’re in love, say it out loud, we don’t have forever. Never hesitate to fall hard in love and think out loud about it, because words could be the light to help love finds us; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“And, darling, I will be loving you ‘til we’re 70, and, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23. And I’m thinking ‘bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways, maybe just the touch of a hand. Well, me, I fall in love with you every single day, and I just wanna tell you I am.” –Ed Sheeran, Thinking Out Loud

I rarely being hooked with certain Western songs nowadays. Yet this one song had successfully caught me in since the first time I heard it. Well, it must be special, right? It’s a song titled “Thinking Out Loud”. Performed by English singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran, the song was released digitally on June 18th 2014 and physically on September 24th 2014. It served as the third promotional single from Sheeran’s second studio album, titled “x” (pronounced as “multiply”), which was released on June 20th 2014. “Thinking Out Loud” gained a commercial success, peaked number one in UK charts, giving Sheeran his second UK number-one single after “Sing”. It became Sheeran’s highest charting US single to date, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Well this makes sense, because the song written by Sheeran along with Amy Wadge has a very beautiful melody and lyrics.

“Thinking Out Loud” is a song about a man’s love confession. As Sheeran said about his own song, it’s an walking-down-the-aisle-for-a-wedding kind of song. When people fall in love, they often wonder about the future; what will it bring for the feeling? Will the love stay the same even though we’re getting older each days? Now or later, no matter what’s coming, we hope that person will feel the same. And now, we speak up our thought and feeling out loud. “When your legs don’t work like they used to before, and I can’t sweep you off of your feet. Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love? Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?” When people fall in love, the feeling will take them up in the air. It feels like it will last forever, because we know that we fall in love with that person all over again in every single day. Even though we’re growing old, the soul is never. Even though memories are fading, the love is never. “‘Cause honey your soul could never grow old, it’s evergreen. And, baby, your smile’s forever in my mind and memory. I’m thinking ‘bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways, maybe it’s all part of a plan. Well, I’ll just keep on making the same mistakes, hoping that you’ll understand.” People fall in love in mysterious ways, even by the smallest thing we ever could imagine, in every possible way. And after all, love is the home; a place to return to. And here we are, where the love found us. In the arms of the beloved ones, under the light of the stars, as we listen to the beating heart, that’s where the love is. “Now take me into your loving arms, kiss me under the light of a thousand stars, place your head on my beating heart. I’m thinking out loud, that maybe we found love right where we are.”

Ed Sheeran and Brittany Cherry in "Thinking Out Loud" music video

A music video for “Thinking Out Loud” was premiered on October 7th 2014. It featured a very lovely ballroom couple dance, portrayed by Sheeran himself with Brittany Cherry, a ballroom dancer, who was also a contestant of So You Think You Can Dance season 10. The dancing choreography was created by Nappytabs. Before shooting for the video, Sheeran did a excessive training with help from Cherry herself and also dancer Paul Karmiryan. The music video is so wonderful. It goes perfectly gorgeous with the romantic ballad song. We can see that Sheeran had worked so hard to make the miracle worked. Not only the song itself is beyond beautiful –with the soul blues melody and slow-jam rhythm, and not to mention the poetic heart-melting lyrics– but also the video has the power to draw people in. “Thinking Out Loud” will definitely be a classic in the future, yes, it’s that kind of a song.

“When my hair’s all but gone and my memory fades, and the crowds don’t remember my name; when my hands don’t play the strings the same way, I know you will still love me the same.” –Ed Sheeran, Thinking Out Loud

Love; one word four letters, and a very common one, indeed. When we want to replace the word ‘love’, then what word could that be? Would it be ‘care’? Would it be ‘like’? Would it be ‘need’? Well that might work. Now try to put ourselves in as the other person, would we want to hear ‘I care for you’, ‘I like you’, or ‘I need you’ coming out from the person we love? Well I don’t think so. ‘I love you’; three words, and a very common sentence, indeed, yet there is no other sentence that is more powerful than that. Love, a very common word, indeed, yet there is no other word that is more powerful than that. It’s alright to be common, when one common word is more than enough to say it all. Never hesitate to use the word ‘love’ to express the feeling, because that one common word could mean the whole world for someone; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“Love is such a common word, so I’d rather say something else to you. I try to think of another word, but I can’t come up with anything. I really want to say something else, but I have no choice.” –Im Byung Soo, Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)

It’s getting near to the end of this month of love, and now I will present you a song titled “Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)”. Performed by Im Byung Soo, written and composed by Lee Jang Hee, it’s a Korean classic that was first released in 1985 as a part of Im’s second studio album. The pop song with upbeat tempo was a megahit. In order to get this song, Im personally sought out Lee in America and asked him to write it. The tempo is exceptionally fast and goes well with his trembling vocals and fancy old-style rap. Up to this date, “Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)” had been performed twice in the Korean entertainment music program, “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”. The first one was on episode 33, the “Duet with Legends” special, when this song was performed by male balladeer Huh Gak, featuring Im Byung Soo himself. It was broadcasted by KBS television station on January 14th 2012, and later by KBS World channel on February 4th 2012.

“Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)” is a song about a man who wants to confess his feeling towards the woman he loves. It tells about his concern and anxiety of how to put the word that would make his feeling reaches her heart. Because somehow, he thinks that ‘love’ itself is such a common word already. “Whenever I spend my time with you, all my worries disappear, I think of ways to make you feel excited and laugh. If my heart was a book, I’d give it to you as a gift, it would show you what I fail to express from my heart.” The feeling that brings comfort, that makes him wanting to make happiness. The feeling that is overwhelming, that is indescribable, that is written in all over his heart. The feeling that makes him afraid of separation, that is too much to bear, that can’t be helped. If ‘love’ is way to cheesy to describe that kind of feeling, then he would die trying to find any other word. “I love you too much until the point that it scares me, I’m nervous that you’ll leave me somehow. I know that I’m a fool worrying over probably nothing, but I can’t help it because of this love I have for you.” Yet, as hard as he tries to find the replacement of the word ‘love’, he can’t find any other that fits. He can’t express it in any other way than through ‘love’. There is no other word that would represent it better than ‘love’. More than anything in this world. It’s inevitable. Because after all, he’s in love, indeed. “You are that I love, I love you. You are that I love, I love you. Nobody else but you, I love you.”

No Brain performed "Love Is Such A Common Word" in "Immortal Songs 2"

Three years later after its first appearance on “Immortal Songs 2”, “Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)” was performed by Korean punk rock band, No Brain, during the 183rd episode, when Lee Jang Hee appeared as the legend. The first part of two-episodes Lee Jang Hee special was broadcasted on January 24th 2015 by KBS television station, and later on February 14th 2015 by KBS World channel. Huh Gak and Im Byung Soo performed the song with a pop ballad arrangement, which was mesmerizing, especially with their amazing vocal harmony. Meanwhile, No Brain’s punk rock ballad rendition of “Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)” was tearing down the stage; it’s over the top! They showed the quintessence of Korean punk rock. Those joyful men surely knew how to have fun, and their performance just got rid of all the stress, indeed, since the original song itself was very lovingly mood-boosting.

“You are that I love, I love you, I love you, I love you. You are that I love, I love you, I love you, I love you. Nobody else but you, I love you, I love you, I love you.” –Im Byung Soo, Love Is Such A Common Word (사랑이란 말은 너무 너무 흔해)

Love; one word four letters. How do you describe love? Can it even be described? Perhaps people have different ways to define love. Perhaps we have our own ways to describe it. Some people say that love is the way we make people smile, laugh, happy. Some other people say that love is in the way we cherish every moment we spent together with them. While some other say that love is in the way we try to do the best for them, in the way we’re eve willing to push our limit for their sake. Some people say that love is giving, while some other say that it is protecting. For some people, love is unselfish, and for some other love is loyalty. I will say, that love is beyond imagination; an act that emerges from the heart. Never try to confine love, because love is everything beautiful in a positive way; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“In this world, you are my one and only love and there’s no one else but you. I would never get tired being around and watching over you, my love.” –Na Hoon Ah, Love (사랑)

As the epitome of love, this time I would like to introduce you to a song titled “Love (사랑)”. Performed by South Korea’s legendary trot singer, Na Hoon Ah, the trot ballad song was first released in 1983. The song is Na’s megahit and considered as Korean’s number one favorite song of all times. Na’s lovely voice and looks portrait the love song perfectly, as it is commonly sung by Korean when proposing to lovers. In the Korean entertainment music program, “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”, “Love (사랑)” was performed by the captivating musical singer, Im Tae Kyung. It was on the 170th episode, during the “Trot Music Special”, when Im collaborated with the winner of 2007 Britain’s Got Talent, Paul Potts, to perform the song.

“Love (사랑)” tells about a man who pours all of his feelings toward the woman he loves in a confession. It’s a song about a man in love; how he defines love and what love means for him. “Of the whole world, I won’t trade you for anything and nothing can compare to you. I wouldn’t be able to live, not even for a while, without you my love my only one.” For him, love comes first before anything. Love is putting the beloved ones above all, without any second best. Love is protecting the beloved one, without getting tired of it. For him, love is irreplaceable. Love is being faithful, without comparing it to anything else. Love is having each other, without leaving. “On a rainy summer day, I will be your umbrella. On a snowy winter day, I will be your fireplace.” For him, love is a shelter; a home to come back to, an umbrella in rainy days, a fireplace in snowy nights. For him, love is a partner for life; a friend in loneliness, a laughter in despair. For him, love is becoming a shelter and a partner for his beloved one.

Im Tae Kyung (left) and Paul Potts (right) performed "Love" in "Immortal Songs 2"

The 170th episode of “Immortal Songs 2” was broadcasted by KBS television station on October 25th 2014, and then it was aired on KBS World channel on November 15th 2014. Im Tae Kyung and Paul Potts, two incredible singers met on stage, made a perfect collaboration in unison for “Love (사랑)”. That was a historical performance that even the audience were shouting for an encore after the performance; something that very rarely happens in “Immortal Songs 2”. The trot music reinterpreted into a magic, and “Love (사랑)” was reborn again as amazing as ever, therefore this performance topped the list for 7 Most Breathtaking Collaboration Performances on “Immortal Songs 2” of 2014.

“Whenever you feel lonely, I will be your friend. Whenever you feel blue, I will give you laughter.” –Na Hoon Ah, Love (사랑)

Have you ever asked to yourself; why does love come? How does it come? Why does it have to be that person? How does it never feel the same with anybody else? Love is a mystery, indeed. It comes suddenly. It can be very surprising in the most unpredictable way. It can’t be stopped and control is overrated. It just happens and there’s no way back; just go with it. Never try too hard to resist it when love comes, because love can’t be mistaken for anything else, it is the way it is and never the other way; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“Can you hear my heart? Should I send it along with the wind? Can you see my heart? Should I secretly draw it out? If the world gets painted with colorful word of love, I’ll wait for you, until my words that I love you reach you.” –Nam Woohyun, When Love Comes (사랑이 올 때) [OST. Modern Farmer]

In order to keep the love-is-in-the-air mood this month, this time I will present a lovable love song titled “When Love Comes (사랑이 올 때)”. The pop dynamic song was served as a soundtrack for SBS’ romantic-comedy drama series, “Modern Farmer” (2014). It was performed by Nam Woohyun, the main vocalist of boy group Infinite, and was released as “Modern Farmer OST Part 1” single album on October 24th 2014.

“When Love Comes (사랑이 올 때)” is a song about a man who falls in love; when he feels that love comes into his life. “When love comes without I realize, when love comes carefully, when love comes like a rain shower; I guess this is love. When love comes sweetly, when love comes embracing me like a dream; every time I see you, suddenly I get a happy smile.” Everything seems so bright, innocent yet foolish like a child. Everything seems so pure, honest yet unselfish like a little kid. Everything is a sign that leads him to one certain thing; that he’s in love, happily in love. “Can you hear me? My words that saying I’m in love. Can you see my eyes? My eyes that showing I’m in love. Every day, only the word of love lingers around me. I will love you, as even the heaven will watch over us.” All he needs now is for that person to recognize his feeling, to understand how he feels toward her. All he does now is for that person to acknowledge his heart, and he’s willing to wait until the love reaches her. “I only love you, can you hear my unfinished confession? If you feel the same way as me, you can hear that love is coming.”

Lee Hong Ki, the actor-singer who was also taking part in the drama series as the lead actor, recorded the acoustic version of “When Love Comes (사랑이 올 때)”. This version was released on November 14th 2014 as “Modern Farmer OST Part 2” single album. Both of the original version and the acoustic one were appeared in “Modern Farmer OST” album which was released on December 26th 2014. The love song is a kind of song that could bright up your day just by listening to it. It’s such a lovely mood-booster.

“When you’re in love innocently, when you’re in love like a fool, when you’re in love like a child; I must be in love right now. When you’re in love honestly, when you’re in love, unselfishly giving your all; being happy is a sign that I must be in love with you now.” –Nam Woohyun, When Love Comes (사랑이 올 때) [OST. Some people say that love is hard to be understood. Well, I might be one of the some. Perhaps it’s not the love itself that is hard to be understood. Perhaps it’s the person who can’t seem to get used to it. For some people, love, or real love, seems like an abstract that only happens in fiction. But then, fact and fiction are like chicken and egg; it’s hard to see which one comes first. Love, or real love, is somewhere out there. If we don’t have one now, then we just haven’t found it yet. Just believe that it’s somewhere out there, waiting to be found. And also believe, when it’s meant to be, love will always find its way; even in a way that will be very surprising for us. Never try too hard to understand and don’t deny when it whether it slowly or suddenly appears, because indeed love is hard to be understood and its appearance could surprise us in every possible way; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

“Why do you appear in my eyes? Why do you always keep appearing? If I lie down and close my eyes, why does your face keep coming in my mind? It doesn’t seem like a big deal then, to calm down my heart. You aren’t just a passing feeling, that much is clear, it’s love. It must be love.” –Kim Bum Soo, Appear (나타나) [OST. Secret Garden]

Talking about the love that comes suddenly to people who used to be alone, I’m reminded of a song titled “Appear (나타나)”. It served as a soundtrack for SBS’ hit drama series, “Secret Garden” (2010), which starred prominent Korean actor and actress, Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won. The pop dynamic song was performed by soloist male singer, Kim Bum Soo, and was released as “Secret Garden OST Part 2” single album on November 18th 2010.

“Appear (나타나)” is a song that tells about a man who finally finds love. Before that, love for him is just an absurd concept that he always finds it hard to accept. But meeting her changes everything. He used to be alone, and he was never bothered by that fact. But after her, he suddenly feels empty, like there’s something missing inside him; a hole that’s only could be filled by her. “I’ve never felt that I’m incomplete, and by the end of the day I never have any regret. But something is weird and there is a strange feeling, my heart seems to have a gap. Strangely, only you can fill up this gap.” He used to live an ordinary life without having any special purpose. But after her, he suddenly feels the urge to have someone for the rest of his life; that’s her. “Although I don’t know much, it’s hard to believe it’s you. Just before you leave, I don’t know why I feel so strange.” He falls in easily yet deeply. Everything is so new for him that it feels strange and weird. Indeed, love appears suddenly. And he can’t just get her off of his head. It’s definitely not just a temporary feeling. And that way he learns, that way she has taught him love. “Perhaps you came to my side because of this.”

Dominated with the band sound throughout the song, “Appear (나타나)” served as the main theme song for “Secret Garden”. On December 27th 2010, the female vocal version of this song was performed by Yoari and was released as “Secret Garden OST Part 4” single album. Both the original version with male vocal and the female vocal version were later included in “Secret Garden OST Special” album, which was released on January 21st 2011. The cheerful melody and the spiritful lyrics make this song one of memorable soundtracks ever.

“Understanding that life is only lived to be old, what you’ve done to this heart is still left. Like the easy thing I've seen in this world, I also got cluttered in love.” –Kim Bum Soo, Appear (나타나) [OST. Secret Garden]
