pieces of me

Here we are, at the last day of the first month of 2015. And also, the last post for The Remembered and The Forgotten. I won’t say much this time, since I’ve said so many in the posts before. At last, I give a quote from Denis Waitley, “Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.” So, happy living your 2015 life, Readers! Stay strong and keep moving on.

“This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted, no silent prayer for the faith-departed. I ain’t gonna be just a face in the crowd, you’re gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud.” –Bon Jovi, It’s My Life

For the last post in this January, let’s wrap up the first month of the new year with something hot and rockin’. Coming from one of my favorite rock bands, Bon Jovi, it’s an alternative rock metal song titled “It’s My Life”. It was released on May 23rd 2000 as the first single from their seventh studio album titled “Crush”. The song charted in the top 10 across several countries, making Bon Jovi the only band once classified as 1980s hair metal to reach the top 40 in the 2000s, a testament to how the song managed to introduce the band to a new, younger fanbase. It’s arguably their most well known post-1980s hit single.
“It’s My Life” ia a song about someone taking control of their own lives; an anthem of freedom. It’s like a motivation to rise up the spirit of living, to move on from a broken heart, to wake up from mourning, to stand stall and never back down. “This is for the ones who stood their ground; for Tommy and Gina who never backed down. Tomorrow’s getting harder, make no mistake; luck ain’t even lucky, got to make your own breaks.” Life will always be full of hurdles indeed, yet God never gives more than human could handle. So let’s face it with our head held high. “Better stand tall when they’re calling you out; don’t bend, don’t break, don’t back down.” It’s our lives and we should, we must, take control of it, don’t bend and don’t break. We won’t live forever anyway, so while we’re alive, it’s now or never. Be free and open your heart. Like Frank Sinatra said, let’s do this our way.
The music video of “It’s My Life”, directed by Wayne Isham, won as Video Of The Year at the VH1 My Music Awards. It starred Will Estes and Shiri Appleby as Tommy and Gina, the characters from the lyrics, respectively. Tommy and Gina were a fictional working class couple that Bon Jovi and Sambora first wrote about in their 1986 hit, “Livin' on a Prayer”. Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Max Martin, this song became an anthem that appealed to many fans, as it spreaded the spirit of living your own life without letting anyone else taking control over it. Indeed, “It’s My Life” is a grand masterpiece from the legendary rock band.

“It’s my life, and it’s now or never, ‘cause I ain’t gonna live forever. I just want to live while I’m alive. My heart is like an open highway. Like Frankie said, I did it my way. I just want to live while I’m alive, ‘cause it’s my life.” –Bon Jovi, It’s My Life

“This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted, no silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain’t gonna be just a face in the crowd, you’re gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud

It’s my life, it’s now or never, I ain’t gonna live forever
I just want to live while I’m alive, it’s my life
My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said I did it my way
I just wanna live while I’m alive, it’s my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground, for Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow’s getting harder make no mistake, luck ain’t even lucky, got to make your own breaks

It’s my life, and it’s now or never, I ain’t gonna live forever
I just want to live while I’m alive, it’s my life
My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said I did it my way
I just want to live while I’m alive, ‘cause it’s my life

Better stand tall when they’re calling you out
Don’t bend, don’t break, baby, don’t back down

It’s my life, and it’s now or never, ‘cause I ain’t gonna live forever
I just want to live while I’m alive, it’s my life
My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said I did it my way
I just want to live while I’m alive, ‘cause it’s my life!”

The 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, once said; believe you can and you’re halfway there. It’s the power of mind, The Remembered and The Forgotten; once you can control your mind, you can believe, and so you can do anything. As Nikos Kazantzakis had said, that in order to succeed, we must first believe that we can. Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact. That one’s by William James.

“I am a mountain. I am a tall tree. I am a swift wind sweeping the country. I am a river down in the valley. I am a vision and I can see clearly.” –R. Kelly, The World’s Greatest (OST. Ali)

First heard this song as a BGM in Korean variety program, KBS’ “The Return of Superman”, during the scene where Song Il Gook taking care of his triplets, I fell in love right at the moment with this song. It’s a song titled “The World’s Greatest”, performed by R. Kelly. It was released as a single on February 18th 2002, and served as a soundtrack for the 2001 movie titled “Ali”. It was a biographical movie of the legendary world champion boxer, Muhammad Ali, where the titular character was portrayed by actor Will Smith.
“The World’s Greatest” is a song about hope and spirit; a message to motivate people to love and respect themselves, that we are beautiful in our own way, that we are the greatest. “I saw the light at the end of a tunnel. Believe in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And faith was right there to pull me through. Used to be locked doors, now I can just walk on through.” It’s a message to encourage people to believe, for dreaming and fighting, for not letting anyone stands in the way, for having hopes, for standing tall. “If anybody asks you who I am, just stand up tall, look them in the face and say; I’m that star up in the sky, I’m that mountain peak up high, hey, I made it, I’m the worlds greatest. And I’m that little bit of hope when my back’s against the ropes, I can feel it, I’m the world’s greatest.”
Besides being a part of “Ali: Original Soundtrack” album, “The World’s Greatest” was also appeared on the bonus disc version of Kelly’s album titled “Chocolate Factory”. The R n’ B song was written and produced by R. Kelly himself, and he was totally inspired by Muhammad Ali when writing the song (“The Greatest” is one of Ali’s nicknames). The beautiful melody combines perfectly with Kelly’s soulful voice. Moreover, the choir’s harmony adds the heartfelt element of this song. It’s one of a kind, very comforting in its own way.

“I am a giant. I am an eagle. I am a lion down in the jungle. I am a marching band. I am the people. I am a helping hand and I am a hero.” –R. Kelly, The World’s Greatest (OST. Ali)

“It’s the world’s greatest, it’s the world’s greatest, come on, world’s greatest ever

I am a mountain, I am a tall tree, I am a swift wind sweeping the country
I am a river down in the valley, I am a vision and I can see clearly
If anybody asks you who I am, just stand up tall, look them in the face and say

I’m that star up in the sky, I’m that mountain peak up high
Hey, I made it, I’m the worlds greatest
And I’m that little bit of hope when my back’s against the ropes
I can feel it, I’m the world’s greatest

I am a giant, I am an eagle, I am a lion down in the jungle
I am a marching band, I am the people, I am a helping hand and I am a hero
If anybody asks you who I am, just stand up tall, look them in the face and say

In the ring of life I'll reign love (I will reign) and the world will notice a king (oh, yeah)
When all is darkest, I'll shine a light (shine a light) and mirrors of success reflect in me (me)

It’s the greatest, can you feel it? It’s the greatest, can you feel it?
I saw the light at the end of a tunnel
Believe in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
And faith was right there to pull me through
Used to be locked doors, now I can just walk on through
It’s the greatest, I’m that star up in the sky”

What’s your resolution for this new year? January is slowly coming to an end now. Some people may have found their goals to be achieved, yet some people may haven’t. For those who still haven’t found it yet, follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams. That’s what Donovan Bailey told us. While Gail Devers said; keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe. The Remember and The Forgotten; don’t think about your frustation, but think about your unfulfilled potential; don’t concern about what you tried and failed, but concern about what it is still possible for you to do. You must know what you want from life.

“Fighters keep fighting. Put your lighters up, point them skyward.” –Bad Meets Evil feat. Bruno Mars, Lighters

American hip-hop duo consisted of the infamous rapper Eminem and Royce da 5’9”, Bad Meets Evil, collaborated with singer Bruno Mars for the song titled “Lighters”. The alternative hip-hop song was released on July 5th 2011, as the second single from Bad Meets Evil’s first EP titled “Hell: The Sequel”. It incorporated soul music, as well as included influences of synthpop.
“Lighters” is a celebration song for those who living out their dreams, without backing out, without giving up. “There is or there ever will be, disagree? Feel free, but from now on I’m refusing to ever give up. Only thing I ever gave up using’s no more excuses.” Whoever we are, there are always people who will try to take us down; don’t let them. Whatever we do, there are always people who will dislike; don’t let them shake you. Follow your passion, prove them wrong. “People don’t usually come back this way from a place that was dark as I was in, just to get to this place. Now let these words be like a switch blade to a haters rib cage. And let it be known that from this day forward, I wanna just say thanks, ‘cause your hate is what gave me the strength.” Let the hurdles forge you to become strong. Let the pain encourages you to become rigid. “I’ll stop when I'm at the very top. You shitted on me on your way up, it’s ‘bout to be a scary drop. ‘Cause what goes up, must come down. You going down on something you don’t wanna see.” In the end, every dream is possible to come true for those who believe and fight for it. “This one’s for you and me, living out our dreams, we’re all right where we should be. With my arms out wide I open my eyes, and now all I wanna see is a sky full of lighters.”
Written and produced by Eminem, Battle Roy and The Smeezingtons, “Lighters” achieved mixed reviews. Some critics praised the change in style of music (which was very different than any other Bad Meets Evil’s songs), while others criticized it for the same reason. Despite the mixed reception, the song performed generally well commercially. Indeed, this song deserves that for the positive and inspirational message it brings.

“You and I know what it’s like to be kicked down, forced to fight. But tonight, we’re alright, so hold up your lights, let it shine.” –Bad Meets Evil feat. Bruno Mars, Lighters

“This one’s for you and me, living out our dreams, we’re all right where we should be
With my arms out wide I open my eyes, and now all I wanna see is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters

By the time you hear this I will have already spiralled up, I would never do nothing to let you cowards fuck my world up
If I was you I would duck, or get struck, like lightning, fighters keep fighting, put your lighters up, point ‘em skyward uh
Had a dream, I was king, I woke up, still king, this rap game’s nipple is mine for the milking
Till nobody else even fucking feels me, ‘till it kills me I swear to God I'll be the fucking illest in this music
There is or there ever will be, disagree? Feel free, but from now on I’m refusing to ever give up
Only thing I ever gave up using’s no more excuses, excuse me if my head is too big for this building
And pardon me if I’m a cocky prick but you cocks are slick popping shit on how you flipped ya life around, crock-o-shit
Who you dicks tryna kid, flipped dick, you did opposite, you stayed the same, cause cock backwards is still cock you pricks
I love it when I tell em shove it, ‘cause it wasn't that, long ago when Marshall sat, flustered lack, lustered
Cause he couldn’t cut mustard, muster up, nothing, brain fuzzy, cause he’s buzzin’, woke up from that buzzin’
Now you wonder why he does it, how he does it, wasn’t cause he had buzzards circlin’ around his head
Waiting for him to drop dead, was it? Or was it cause them bitches wrote him off, little hussy ass, scuzzes, fuck it, guess it doesn’t matter now, does it
What difference it makes? What it takes to get it through your thick skulls, that this ain’t some bullshit, people don’t usually come back this way
From a place that was dark as I was in, just to get to this place, now let these words be like a switch blade to a haters rib cage
And let it be known that from this day forward I wanna just say thanks, ‘cause your hate is what gave me the strength
So let em bic’s raise cause I came with 5’9” but I feel like I’m 6’8”!

By the time you hear this I’ll probably already be outtie
I advance like going from toting iron to going and buying 4 or 5 of the homies the iron man Audi
My daddy told me slow down, boy, you goin’ to blow it and I ain’t gotta stop the beat a minute
To tell Shady I love him the same way that he did, Dr. Dre on the Chronic
Tell him how real he is or how high I am or how I would kill for him for him to know it
I cried plenty tears, my daddy got a bad back so it’s only right that I write till he can march
Right into that post office and tell em to hang it up, now his career’s Lebron’s jersey in 20 years
I’ll stop when I'm at the very top, you shitted on me on your way up, it’s ‘bout to be a scary drop
‘Cause what goes up, must come down, you going down on something you don’t wanna see, like a hairy box
Every hour, happy hour now, life is wacky now, used to have to eat the cat to get the pussy, now I’m just the cats meooww, ow
Classic cow, always down for the catch weight like Pacquiao, ya’ll are doomed
I remember when T-Pain ain’t wanna work with me, my car starts itself, parks itself and autotunes
Cause now I’m in the Aston I went from having my city locked up to getting treated like Kwame Kilpatrick
And now I'm fantastic Compared to a weed high And y’all niggas just gossipin’ like bitches on a radio and TV
See me, we fly, y’all bugging out like Wendy Williams staring at a bee-hive
And how real is that, I remember signing my first deal and now I’m the second best, I can deal with that
Now Bruno can show his ass, without the MTV awards gag

You and I know what it’s like to be kicked down, forced to fight
But tonight, we’re alright, so hold up your lights, let it shine
Cause, this one’s for you and me, living out our dreams, we’re all right where we should be
With my arms out wide, I open my eyes, and now all I wanna see is a sky full of lighters
A sky full of lighters”

Life isn’t always going as our plans. Therefore we must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. That’s what Joseph Campbell said. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come. Believe that every fall is a beginning of another rise. Once you raise, prepare for another fall that might come. Jennifer Ritchie Payette said, “It’s humbling to start fresh. It takes a lot of courage. But it can be reinvigorating. You just have to put your ego on a shelf and tell it to be quiet.” The Remembered and The Forgotten, in a life that is full of rise and fall, it’s never too late to start over. As Aberjhani said, reconstruct your soul with faith, it transforms agony into peace.

“Sometimes in life you feel the fight is over, and it seems as though the writings on the wall. Superstar you finally made it, but once your picture becomes tainted, it’s what they call the rise and fall.” –Craig David feat. Sting, Rise & Fall

Talking about the rise and fall of life, there’s a song by British singer, Craig David, titled “Rise & Fall”. In this R n’ B song, David collaborated with British infamous singer and musician, Sting. It was released as a single on April 28th 2003, as the third single taken from his second studio album, titled “Slicker Than Your Average” that was released on 2002.
“Rise & Fall” is a song about someone who reaches the peak but then got lost afterward, blinded by wealth and fame. Luckily he realizes that and tries to get his head straight. Wealth and fame; because of these two, people tend to easily forget who they really are. “I always said that I was gonna make it, now it’s plain for everyone to see. But this game I’m in don’t take no prisoners, just casualties. I know that everything is gonna change, even the friends I knew before may go. But this dream is the life I’ve been searching for.” Once people feel like they can have everything they want in their life, that’s when things are never the same again. Without realizing, they change, little by little, because with money comes a different status. They begin to be too concerned with all the things they own, being blinded. And that’s when they start to lose their integrity. They search for comforts, but some things can take over their life and lead them to something worse. “Burnt all my bridges, now I’ve run out of places, and there’s nowhere left for me to turn, been caught in comprimising situations. I should have learnt from all those times I didn’t walk away, when I knew that it was best to go. Is it too late to show you the shape of my heart?” Well the fight is not over yet when you finally make it. Your dreams come true and you have everything you want, yet it doesn’t mean that you can act like a brat. You’re up in the air, yet you have to know exactly when to look down and come back to earth. Indeed, the fall is there to let people to appreciate the rise; it’s there to allow people to learn, to be better.
Written by Craig David himself along with Sting and Dominic Miller, “Rise & Fall” is based on a sample of Sting’s song titled “Shape of My Heart” which was released on 1993. The song became the biggest hit from David’s album, as it was topping the UK music charts. Calm yet captivating, the song is a perfect company to think on about your life.

“Now I know, I made mistakes, think I don’t care, but you don’t realise what this means to me. So let me have, just one more chance. I’m not the man I used to be.” –Craig David feat. Sting, Rise & Fall

“Sometimes in life you feel the fight is over, and it seems as though the writings on the wall
Superstar you finally made it, but once your picture becomes tainted
It’s what they call, the rise and fall

I always said that I was gonna make it, now it’s plain for everyone to see,
But this game I’m in don’t take no prisoners, just casualties
I know that everything is gonna change, even the friends I knew before may go
But this dream is the life I’ve been searching for
Started believing that I was the greatest, my life was never gonna be the same
‘Cause with the money came a different status, that’s when things change
Now I’m too concerned with all the things I own, blinded by all the pretty girls I see
I’m beginning to lose my integrity

I never used to be a troublemaker, now I don’t even wanna please the fans
No autographs, no interviews, no pictures, endless demands
Give into vices that was clearly wrong, the type that seems to make me feel so right
But some things you may find can take over your life
Burnt all my bridges now I’ve run out of places, and there’s nowhere left for me to turn
Been caught in comprimising situations, I should have learnt
From all those times I didn’t walk away, when I knew that it was best to go
Is it too late to show you the shape of my heart?

Now I know, I made mistakes, think I don’t care, but you don’t realise what this means to me,
So let me have, just one more chance, I’m not the man I used to be, used to be”

“Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is like a tree going into the sky, and sadness is like the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. The bigger the tree, the bigger will be its roots. In fact, it is always in proportion. That’s its balance.” That’s a quote by the infamous Osho Rajneesh, and can’t agree more with it. Indeed, a life needs its balance in order to continue living; The Remembered and The Forgotten, a balance of the past to move towards the future.

“As my soul heals the shame, I will grow through this pain. Lord, I’m doing all I can to be a better man.” –Robbie Williams, Better Man

British infamous singer, Robbie Williams, has a great song about contemplation. The song is titled “Better Man”. It was released as a single on October 22nd 2001, and served as the last single from his third studio album, “Sing When You’re Winning”.
“Better Man” is a song about someone who reflects on the past in order to make a better future, ans asks God to help. “Send someone to love me, I need to rest in arms keep me safe from harm in pouring rain. Give me endless summer, Lord I fear the cold, feel I’m getting old before my time.” Time flies and loneliness remains, as we’re getting older and our hearts become colder. And all we need is a consolation, to look at every little things with a positive mind. “Go easy on my conscience, ‘cause it’s not my fault. I know I’ve been taught to take the blame. Rest assured, my angels will catch my tears. Walk me out of here, I’m in pain.” Pain is there to make people grow. Past is there to make people learn. Sadness is there to make people appreciate happiness. That’s the balancing we take to be a better man each days. In love, we may hit the rock bottom, once or twice or even more, yet we will find the one, someday and somehow.
The soft rock song was a big success, though the single was only released in Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America. “Better Man” became one of Robbie Williams’ signature songs, along with “Feel” and “Eternity”. Indeed, it’s a classic masterpiece.

“Once you’ve found that lover you’re homeward bound, love is all around. I know some have fallen on stony ground, but love is all around.” –Robbie Williams, Better Man

“Send someone to love me, I need to rest in arms keep me safe from harm in pouring rain
Give me endless summer, Lord I fear the cold, feel I’m getting old before my time

As my soul heals the shame, I will grow through this pain
Lord, I’m doing all I can to be a better man

Go easy on my conscience ‘cause it’s not my fault, I know I’ve been taught to take the blame
Rest assured, my angels will catch my tears, walk me out of here, I’m in pain

Once you’ve found that lover you’re homeward bound, love is all around, love is all around
I know some have fallen on stony ground, but love is all around”

Every nation has a history; a long journey that allows it and its people to grow up. Every history has its own bloody pages; ones that people want to erase the most from the memory. Hence every history has its own glory pages; ones that people will always cherish as a precious memory. Whether it’s bloody ones or glory ones, they’ve made people what they are now, and they will always be a reminder of what they were before and what they’ve been through; The Remembered and The Forgotten.

“The world is closing in, did you ever think that we could be so close like brothers? The future’s in the air, I can feel it everywhere, blowing with the wind of change.” –Scorpions, Wind Of Change

What would it be like when a history is written in a form of song? Scorpions’ classic megahit titled “Wind Of Change” is probably the best example of that. Released as a single on 1991, the power ballad song was written by Scorpions’ vocalist, Klaus Meine. In 1988, Scorpions became the first hard-rock band to play in Russia, and they returned to Moscow in 1989 to play at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. At this show, the band were inspired by the sight of thousands of Russians cheering them on even though they were a German band. In an interview, Meine said, “Everyone was there: the Red Army, journalists, musicians from Germany, from America, from Russia-the whole world on one boat. It was like a vision; everyone was talking the same language. It was a very positive vibe. That night was the basic inspiration for Wind Of Change.”
“Wind Of Change” is a kind of message soundtrack to the world’s most peaceful revolution on earth; that what was stated by Scorpions’ guitarist, Rudolf Schenker. As stated in Wikipedia, the lyrics celebrate glasnost in the USSR, the end of the Cold War, and also talk about hope when tense conditions arose due to the fall of Communist-run governments among Eastern Bloc nations beginning in 1989. “I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park, listening to the wind of change. An August summer night, soldiers passing by, listening to the wind of change.” The Moskva is the name of the river that runs through Moscow (both the city and the river are named identically in Russian), and Gorky Park is an amusement park in Moscow named after Maxim Gorky, a famous communist writer.
“Take me to the magic of the moment on a glory night, where the children of tomorrow share their dreams with you and me. Take me to the magic of the moment on a glory night, where the children of tomorrow dream away in the wind of change.” It’s a song about hope for a better and peaceful future; a brighter future for the children and next generation. In order for that to come true, a change is needed, a very big one; a revolution to end all wars and bring people together to build the world. “Walking down the street, distant memories are buried in the past forever.” The war is in the past already, let it be buried. Let’s face the future while holding hands; a future where all children can dream freely, far from war.
The “Wind Of Change” single has sold millions of copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. Even until now, it holds the record for the best-selling single by a German artist, and has become the signature song of Scorpions. Before being released as a single on 1991, it appeared on the band’s eleventh studio album titled “Crazy World”, which was released on 1990, yet it gained a worldwide attention in 1991. Back in 1990, on the band’s very own homeland, “Wind Of Change” became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification; an event that politically lasted from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to the official reunification on October 3rd 1990. This song is as old as I am, yet the feeling of peace and the spirit of freedom are never fading from it. Fascinating, isn’t it? How a song could depict a history in it. Indeed, “Wind Of Change” is a very special song, a one-of-a-kind; an everlasting hits, a masterpiece.

“The wind of change blows straight into the face of time, like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell for peace of mind.” –Scorpions, Wind Of Change

Let your balalaika sing what my guitar wants to say”

Life is a series of meetings and separations; that’s what Santosh Kalwar once said in his book titled “That’s My Love Story”. In a relation to that, I remember a quote by Nadia Scrieva in her book titled “Fathoms of Forgiveness”. She wrote that each meeting occurs at the precise moment for which it was meant; usually, when it will have the greatest impact on our lives. Well I believe that there’s no such thing as a coincidence. All events in life are connected by some means; cause and effect. So are meetings and separations, so are The Remembered and The Forgotten. Why do we get separated? Why do we meet again after all these years? Why do I keep remember those times we’ve spent together? Why can’t I forget those memories? Someday we’ll know, by all means.

“I need to turn back time again, but where did we go wrong? Our past is about to disappear.” –One More Chance, Please Come Back To Me (시간을 거슬러) [OST. Discovery of Love]

Who say that a broken heart couldn’t be celebrated? Well, a broken heart is a sad thing indeed, yet it doesn’t mean that we have to be 100% melancholic because of that. Let’s be positive, it’s a brand new year anyway. I tell you this because the song I’m about to introduce is a pop song with dynamic and cheerful melody titled “Please Come Back To Me (시간을 거슬러)” by indie singers and musicians duo, One More Chance. It was released as a single “Discovery of Love OST Part 3” on August 27th 2014 for the KBS’ romantic comedy drama series, “Discovery of Love” (2014), original soundtrack. It also appeared on “Discovery of Love OST” album, which was released on November 4th 2014.

“Please Come Back To Me (시간을 거슬러)” is a song about a sincere wish of a man who wants to turn back the time, so that he could start over with the love that has left him. “One day, you who went far away from me, you who let go of my hand, you were getting farther away like the hands of a clock.” She has left, yet time keeps on ticking and doesn’t know how to stop. Memories are fading, yet time keeps on going and he doesn’t have the power to stop it. “Clock hands are getting farther away, please don’t go. I try to hold on but I can’t.” Longing turns into a realization of his mistakes. Realization turns into disappoinment and anger toward himself. They turn into regrets. Regrets turn into a desperate wish to turn back the time. The wish turns into a begging; to come back. “If I could turn back time, and if we could ever meet again, if we could ever love again, even if I were about to lose everything else, please come back to me.”
Before being served as a soundtrack for “Discovery of Love” (2014), “Please Come Back To Me (시간을 거슬러)” was originally released by One More Chance as a part of their debut single on May 18th 2010, and be a part of their first EP which was released on September 14th 2010. For the soundtrack version, the duo consisted of Jung Ji Chan and Park Won rearranged the song, yet only the intro part that was different from the original version. Truth to be told, I’ve known this song long before it became the soundtrack. Back then it was so hard to find the English translation because this song was barely popular internationally. So thanks God, it found its way to me.

Shannon L. Alder said that every relationship that has hit a crossroads has asked, “What is it that you want from me?” Contemplation; that’s what people mostly do after having a big fight or even a break-up. What is it that you really want from the relationship itself? Is it really worth fighting for? She also said that all great beginnings start in the dark, when the moon greets us to a new day at midnight. It means that a big fight or even a break-up in a relationship doesn’t always mean the end of it. Instead, it could be the beginning of a great ending for both; The Remembered and The Forgotten. In her book titled “Born Ready: Unleash Your Inner Dream Girl”, Jennifer Elisabeth stated, “Starting over can be the scariest thing in the entire world, whether it’s leaving a lover, a school, a team, a friend or anything else that feels like a core part of our identity but when your gut is telling you that something here isn’t right or feels unsafe, I really want you to listen and trust in that voice.” So don’t be afraid to start over.

“Should I tell you I love you? Should we start again? I know you better than anyone else, so when I see you’re hurt, I’m hurt too. Should I tell you to come back? Back to me, the one you were most comfortable with. It can’t be the end of our love from back then.” –Park Shi Hwan, The Way We Loved (그때 우리 사랑은) [OST. Emergency Couple]

I’ve prepared a song that will brighten up your beginning of this year, with this medium-fast tempo and exciting melody, from a song titled “The Way We Loved (그때 우리 사랑은)”. Performed by Superstar K5’s runner-up, Park Shi Hwan, the song was served as a soundtrack for tvN’s romantic comedy drama series, “Emergency Couple” (2014). The pop dynamic song was first released as a single “Emergency Couple OST Part 3” on February 21st 2014, and later became a part of album “Emergency Couple OST” which was released on April 18th 2014.

“The Way We Loved (그때 우리 사랑은)” is a song about a man who asks for his ex-lover to get back together and start their relationship all over again. During his time alone after the break-up, finally he can see clearly what makes their relationship isn’t working before. They were both young and made many mistakes back then. Now as they meet again, with more mature thoughts and personalities, he thinks that it’s worth trying to build the broken relationship again. “I wasn’t ready for this love, and I didn’t know what breaking up was. Now I know, but my regret comes too late, though I think I can do better now.” The chance is there, and he bravely grabs it. “Words that came spilling out, and deep scars that left, I was bad at everything. Finally I see it, if only I’m given a chance.” He believes that love is not over yet, and that’s the way they loved. Indeed, when people grow up, they tend to see things more clearly, and understand love more deeply; that love is more than just fluttering butterflies in stomach, but what’s more important is being comfortable with the person and the love itself. “Yes, now I finally know, how love can exist even after the butterflies are gone. I guess this is just the beginning of my love.”
The melody of the song has a mixed of rock and ballad in it, which I love so much. And I especially love how the pop melody is incorporated with the orchestra sound. That’s why “The Way We Loved (그때 우리 사랑은)” has made it into the list of 7 Best K-Drama Soundtracks of 2014. Moreover, Park Shi Hwan’s vocal stands out and goes well with the melody. Not to mention that, of course, the lyrics are suited so well too with the drama series storyline. It’s a great soundtrack and Park is such a lovable singer; hope to see him more in the future.

“Back then, I didn’t like getting used to it all. My heart was too heavy to beat again. We made a promise before the world, but how did we get so far apart?” –Park Shi Hwan, The Way We Loved (그때 우리 사랑은) [OST. Emergency Couple]
