Topping the Sunday evening slot TV rating for four months in a row, the popularity of “2 Days and 1 Night” season 3 is flying high through the roof now. Yet indeed, the program really deserves the high ratings, immense popularity, and great appreciations. The new Production Director (PD), Yoo Ho Jin, added four new members to start off the third season of the show last year; Kim Joo Hyuk, Kim Jun Ho, Defconn, and the youngest (maknae) member Jung Joon Young. They joined Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jong Min who continued from the previous season.

Reviving the quality of the first season as well as overcoming the downfall of the second season, the cast and crew of the third season have been dubbed as the best line-up of the show. As the 16th post for 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014, I write down The Best Moments on “2 Days and 1 Night” of 2014. I will list them from the earlier episode until the later ones. Like I’ve said before, because every moment is precious, so it deserves no ranking.

The Birth of 3G (Relaxing Trip Special)

The first part of Relaxing Trip Special episodes was the beginning of the infamous 3G brothers bound; Kim Joo Hyuk, Kim Jun Ho, and Kim Jong Min. The abbreviation 3G was coming from the numbers of member who had a leg cramp on that day (“cramp” in Korean is “jwi” (쥐)). It began with Kim Jong Min having the cramp while climbing the ice wall for the lunch game of chance challenge. Later on, continued with Kim Jun Ho and Kim Joo Hyuk during the thigh wrestling game consecutively. Accidentally, the three of them were in same team during the episode, since they were all losing the ice wall climbing game. Therefore, the infamous-to-be-lost-in-every-game 3G brothers was officially born.

The Brotherhood of the Sea (The Manly Trip Special)

During the first part of The Manly Trip Special episodes, all six members as a team failed to win the race, therefore on the second part of the special episodes, the members had to do octopus fishing at dawn as punishment. However, only one member must go, because the fishing boat was too small. Instead of a bedtime game of chance (they all slept indoor), they did the fishing game of chance to decide the one who was lucky enough to go on boat. Beyond that, the production team staffs were also making their bet on the members. The man with the worst luck ever, Kim Jong Min, lost all the games and was selected to go fishing. Yet it’s not 2D1N if it didn’t have a surprising twist. Jong Min could take one member to go along with him. In the end, he chose Kim Jun Ho over other members to go octopus fishing together. And that was the beginning of the dumb-and-dumber-like brotherhood between them. The comical chemistry bound between them is no joke!

The Heirs of KBS (Jeollanamdo Great Food Tour Special)

The Jeollanamdo Great Food Tour Special episode actually could make it into 7 Most Memorable “2 Days and 1 Night” Episodes of 2014 list. Unfortunately, it was beaten down by the other seven episodes on the list. So probably this episode was on the number eight of The Most Memorable “2 Days and 1 Night” Episodes of 2014 list. The reason is because this special episodes have so many best moments in it. One of them was when the members put the hidden camera prank on Park Saeng Min (“Entertainment Weekly”’s reporter). The highlight was the ending when actress Park Shin Hye made an appearance as Morning Angel guest during the second part of the special episodes. From the way she woke up the members, the way the members reacted, the part when Defconn dubbed himself as “Kim Tan” of 2D1N (referring to Park’s current hit drama series back then, SBS’ “The Heirs”, where she portrayed a poor highschool girl named Cha Eun Sang; the character’s love interest was a boy named Kim Tan, who was portrayed by actor Lee Min Ho), until when the members escorted her back to her car, all were so entertaining!

The Wheel of Fortune (One Day Trip Special)

2D1N did an unusual trip for the One Day Trip Special episodes. Just like the title, the trip was lasted only one day and the members could go home at night, but that privilege was only applied to the team who won the final mission. The six members were divided into two teams of three; Jung Joon Young, Cha Tae Hyun, and Kim Jun Ho in one team (blue team); Kim Jong Min, Kim Joo Hyuk, and Defconn in the other team (red team). Tae Hyun and Jun Ho were so excited that they were in the same team with Joon Young, the icon of luck. They were so confident that they would win. However, they lost most of the games, making them had a bigger chance to sleep outdoor than the other team. There were a total of 16 slots on the wheel of fortune; blue team had 9 slots, red team had 6, and 1 slot for “everyone sleeps outdoor”. At the end of the fierce battle, the wheel of fortune was spinned, and guess what, among those possibilities, the wheel stopped on the red slot! As expected from the icon of luck, Joon Young’s team were exempted from punishment and they could go home early that day. What an amazing twist!

The Escape of Season 3: Ridiculous Hostage (Summer Heat Escape Trip Special)

Once upon the summer 2014, 2D1N members had a mind battle with the production team. It was during the Summer Heat Escape Trip Special episodes, when the members were plotting an escape from the crew, as a form of protest and dejection since they felt betrayed and tricked (the production team made the games were so impossible for them to win it over). At first, they just attempted to escape in order to fix the broken air conditioner of their car, but since they couldn’t find an open car repair shop, it turned out to a ridiculous hostage situation. The battle between members and production team is always a signature of 2D1N, and it is always so amusing to see that! Moreover, the members became one team and were united in this kind of battle, therefore it’s always interesting. Besides, in this special, we can see the maknae, Jung Joon Young’s first and biggest humiliation as the icon of luck to be the latest for going home and do the punishment all by himself.

The Maknae’s Flirting Time (Free Travel in Gunsan Special)

Gorgeous young actress, Shin Se Kyung, came as the Morning Angel guest during the second part of Free Travel in Gunsan Special episodes. Her appearance boosted up the mood of the members as it was already a long time since they last had a Morning Angel for the morning mission. Since Shin was like a younger sister for Kim Joo Hyuk (they’re working under the same artist management, Namoo Entertainment, and he had known her since she was in junior high school), the members, including Joo Hyuk himself and especially Kim Jun Ho and Cha Tae Hyun, teased her a lot. They were asking about Shin’s ideal type, and without waiting her answer, they offered their maknae, Jung Joon Young. Joon Young was unusually quiet at that time, making his older brother (hyung) members were suspicious that he was interested with Shin. However, it turned out that Shin was also having interest for Joon Young as well. Don’t know why but I was really pleased with their flirtatious behaviors toward each other. I personally think that they would make a great couple; so lovable! Addition to that, the acting game during breakfast also can’t be missed out; so hilarious!

The Ugly Truth (The Best Autumn Meal Special)

On The Best Autumn Meal Special episodes, the members were teamed up with two best chefs in Korea, Sam Kim and Raymond Kim, for a cooking dinner battle. It was during the second part of the special episodes when the Team Sam (consisted of Chef Sam, Kim Jun Ho, Cha Tae Hyun, and Defconn) took the lie detector challenge in order to gain some vegetables as their cooking ingredients. They had to answer all questions with the truth (so that the lie detector machine wouldn’t give them the electric shock) to win the game and gain the ingredients. The first question was for Jun Ho to answer: “During the filming in Gimje, did you poop your pants?” He said no, yet it turned out to be a lie! Gosh! Wait, it’s not over yet. Tae Hyun got this question: “In the next life, I will marry my current wife again.” He firmly said yes, and guess what? It turned out to be a lie too! Geez! Too ugly to be true, too funny to be rude.

Following the list of 7 Best Moments with Guests on “Running Man” of 2014, here I will make the list of The Most Memorable “Running Man” Episodes of 2014 as the 15th post for 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014. Actually, it’s so hard for me to pick among many episodes that “Running Man” (RM) has this year. I’ve done it before with “2 Days and 1 Night” (2D1N), but unlike 2D1N, RM has different theme and concept for each episode (to make it clear: 2D1N shoots two or more episodes in one time, meanwhile RM shoots only for one episode in one time). However, I will try my best to choose some episodes and put them in ranking. This list is purely based on my own preferences. Here we go~~~

7. My Love from the Running Star (Episode 185), Running Heroes (Episode 216), & Star Running Man (Episode 222)
Opening up the list on number seven, here are episode 185, 216, and 222 which are tied on this position. The similarity of these three episodes that there is no guest appearing on it (though young actress Kim Hyun Soo appeared very shortly on episode 185). On the episode 185, they did parody missions based on the recent big hit drama series back then, “My Love from the Star” (also known as “You Who Came from the Star”). While on the episode 216, RM members became superheroes (Yoo Jae Suk as Superman, Lee Kwang Soo as Avatar, Song Ji Hyo as Wonder Woman, Haha as Hong Gil Dong, Ji Suk Jin as Batman, Kim Jong Kook as Wolverine, Gary as Son O-Gong). And on the episode 222, RM members became aliens. The shocking costumes, make-ups, and appearances, hilarious games during the missions, and also the members capability to entertain even without the appearance of guests, these three episodes deserve to be on this list!

6. Team Running Man VS Team Angel Eyes (Episode 190)

Moving up to the number six, here is the 190th installment of RM. A total of seven guests from the upcoming SBS’ weekend drama series back then, “Angel Eyes”, appeared as Team RM’s opponent for the day. They were Goo Hye Sun, Lee Sang Yoon, Kwon Hae Hyo, Kim Ji Suk, Kang Ha Neul, BIGBANG’s Seungri, and Gong Hyung Jin. It was a quite long time since all RM members working together as a team, therefore their spirits were so up, moreover they thought that their opponent team was the easy one. However, Team Angel Eyes wasn’t that easy to beat. Their teamwork was no kidding! From the Royalty Relay Race (where they had to climb 60 floors of stairs in an estafet running), All Kill Quiz Battle, Acupuncture Mat Competition, until the final mission The World’s Oddest Fire Fighter Competition, all were so amusing. My favorite part is of course the Royalty Relay Race. And also the All Kill Quiz Battle; when will we can see the mighty Kim Jong Kook begging down on his knees again, right?

5. Summer Part-Time Jobs Mission (Episode 205), Triangular Mystery Race (Episode 209) & 2014 Foreigner Club Race (Episode 227)

Episode 205, 209, and 227 are tied for the number five position of the list. The similiarities between these three episodes are: (a) more than one guests or many participants, (b) no Name Tag Elimination or Hide and Seek game as the final mission, and (c) many great and hilarious moments during the preliminary missions that are too good to be missed out. From the episode 205 –the guests were singers Baek Ji Young, Hong Jin Young, Miss A’s Fei, model Kang Seung Hyun, and comedian Lee Gook Joo– there were lots of best moments during the first mission (Amusement Park Sidejob: Job Scramble), second mission (Barbeque Restaurant Sidejob: Pick Up the Lid), and even until the third mission (Newspaper Delivery Sidejob: No Mercy Basketball). Meanwhile, from the episode 209 –the guests were HotSechgodRG (Moon Hee Jun, Eun Ji Won, Danny Ahn, Cheon Jung Myun), EXO (Kai, Sehun), SHINee’s Taemin, and Sistar’s Soyou– my favorite was during the Triangular Wrestling game, especially when Kim Jong Kook made fun of Yoo Jae Suk, Ji Suk Jin, and Lee Kwang Soo (and then Song Ji Hyo took the revenge for them); incredibly hilarious! And last but not least, from the episode 227, which was the last episode of 2014 –the guests were baseball athletes Ryu Hyun Jin and Kang Jung Ho– I especially like the Human Bowling game so much; it was totally funny! Moreover, the ending of this episode was so touching. It was great overall!

4. Opposite Ends of Extreme Love Race (Episode 224)

Up next on the number four position is the 224th installment of RM, when four gorgeous young actresses and one beautiful MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) athlete appeared as guests for the day. They were Han Groo, Jeon So Min, Lee Sung Kyung, Kyung Soo Jin, and MMA athlete Song Ga Yeon. For the whole episode, along with Song Ji Hyo, they were paired with RM male members (Han Groo & Yoo Jae Suk, Jeon So Min & Lee Kwang Soo, Lee Sung Kyung & Haha, Song Ga Yeon & Kim Jong Kook, Kyung Soo Jin & Gary, Song Ji Hyo & Ji Suk Jin) as they did the couple race. From the introduction, first mission; Summer VS Winter (the Summer mission is Love is to Roll Around, they tumble three times on the diving board, stand on the end of the board, throw up a huge heart sign while facing each other, while the Winter mission is Escape the Iglo, they dance along the music inside the iglo, run outside as soon as the whistle blows and grab a half piece of the broken heart to match it with their other half piece), second mission; 1 VS 100 (the number 1 mission is to answer one question correctly, the male is given the question to ask on the 1st floor, and then climbs up the stairs to ask the question to the female partner who stands on the 22nd floor, while the number 100 mission is to score 100 points within 100 seconds, the women and the men play separate games of basketball inside a trampoline ring, the first team to score 100 points wins, one goal is counted as 10 points), final mission; Bell Hide and Seek (Kyung Soo Jin & Gary couple attack, while the rest couples defense and get the connected couple name tag, they have to complete the mission –find the matching U-shaped magnet– before getting eliminated by the offense couple), until the closing (Song Ga Yeon’s low kick on Gary as the final closing slate, all were so amusing. It was the first time ever in RM history to use low kick as the closing slate!

3. 2014 Running Man’s Choice: The Janggi Race (Episode 182)

Opening the big three of the list is the episode 182 of RM on number three position. The concept of this episode was made and sent by one of RM’s huge fans from Hongkong, Irene Tam. From the first mission (Horse Race), second mission (Big Three Relay Water Games), until the final mission (Janggi Name Tag Elimination), all were designed by Irene herself. She even made slots for three guests, and the chosen were young talented actor Yeo Jin Goo, Tiny G’s Do Hee, and rising idol-actor Im Siwan. From the introduction, Horse Race, Big Three Relay Water Games (flying chair basketball, blop jump, diving jump), the final mission, even until the closing, all were so fascinating. Especially during the final mission, the idea was so brilliant. The rule was based on Hongkong style chess game, where there were two teams, each consisted of General, Cart, Horse, Canon, and Soldier (from highest to lowest rank consecutively). The higher rank of one team could kill anyone of the opponent team’s lower rank. The same rank could kill each other, and there was a special rule for Soldier, they had the power to oust the General. Once the General was killed, the whole team lost. The whole episode basically showed that RM got lots of love from the international fans, and of course, that the name tag elimination game was the best!

2. Running Miniseries: “It’s Okay, We’re Heirs” (Episode 213)

On the runner-up position of the list, here is the 213th installment of RM, where five actresses who were well-known for their fierce and devilish roles in drama series made appearance as guests. They were Seo Woo, Lee Yoo Ri, Kim Min Seo, Choi Yeo Jin, and Yoo In Young. We could see the unique and funny charms hidden behind the undeniable charisma of those five women during the couple race. From the opening (the women met their partner for the first time while parodying their infamous evil characters from their drama series: Seo Woo & Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Yoo Ri & Gary, Kim Min Seo & Kim Jong Kook, Choi Yeo Jin & Lee Kwang Soo, Yoo In Young & Haha, Song Ji Hyo & Ji Suk Jin), The Red Earth’s Desire game (hilariously terrific battle on the pond of mud red clay), Destruction of Evidence game (acting out a scene parody, continuing with shredding papers while battling with time limit), until the final mission King Maker: Turn My Man Into A Heir (put the real heir’s name tag on the male partner’s back and stand on the designated platform), all were so entertaining. Many best moments were in this episode (Giraffe the public stepladder, Yeo Jin soaking wet photoshoot session, etc.), therefore it deserves the second place winner. The five strongest roses were literally taking over RM!

1. Running Man’s 2014 Idol Athletic Competition (Episode 195)

Idol Athletic Competition has been an annual race in RM, and The Most Memorable “Running Man” Episodes of 2014 goes to 2014 Idol Athletic Competition, here on the top position of the list. The members and guests were divided in three teams, consisted of: Team 2PM (Song Ji Hyo, Jun.K, Nichkhun, Junho, Wooyoung, Chansung), Team 2NE1 (Kim Jong Kook, Gary, CL, Park Bom, Sandara, Minzy), and Team Mystic89 (Ji Suk Jin, Haha, Lee Kwang Soo, Yoon Jong Shin, Jo Jung Chi –being subtituted by Eddy Kim during the second round only–, Muzie). Meanwhile, Yoo Jae Suk didn’t belong in any team and became the special MC of the day. There were so many great and hilarious moments in this 195th installment of RM. From the introduction (Jae Suk teased Nichkhun about the news of him being in a relationship with Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany, Jong Kook’s doorstep hip hop dance, Team Mystic89’s unsynchronized dance and unexpected ending), Relay City Marathon (Bom and Dara who couldn’t drink coffee, Dara who’s getting dragged by the dog, Suk Jin’s dog who’s suddenly turning away histerically, Kwang Soo’s misery while piggybacking Jong Shin, Gary who ran away so fast without taking the baton), MC Yoo’s Survival Game (the potato costumes, the incidental assistant MCs, Jae Suk’s chin pull-up challenge), until the highlight final mission, 1:1:1 Name Tag Elimination, when MC Yoo was live broadcasting the game, all were so amusing. Name Tag Elimination, along with Hide and Seek, were the main and signature games in RM, and also my favorite. Since I rarely see those games now in recent episodes of RM, this episode deserves the number one position for preserving the tradition. Keep on running, “Running Man!”
Wrote by Mashita Fandia

Four years and still counting, “Running Man” (RM) has been one of my main sources of laughter and happiness. 2014 has been a worth riding rollercoaster year for RM. Through the good and the bad, Yoo Jae Suk, Ji Suk Jin, Kim Jong Kook, Haha, Gary, Song Ji Hyo, and Lee Kwang Soo have done their best to entertain people. This program could shine even brighter because of those amazing guests that have come to the show and surprised me with their hilarious charms. In order to give a big salute and appreciation for those guests, I make the list of The Best Moments with Guests on “Running Man” of 2014 as the 14th post for 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014. This time I use a different format from previous lists. I won’t rank those moments. Instead, I will list them from the earlier episode until the later ones. Because every moment is precious, so it deserves no ranking.

Lee Gook Joo & Haha – “My Ear Candy” Dance Cover (Episode 205)

The rising gag woman of 2014, Lee Gook Joo, appeared as one of guests on the 205th episode of RM. The episode was broadcasted on July 20th. Besides Lee, singers Baek Ji Young and Hong Jin Young, model Kang Seung Hyun, and a member of girl group Miss A, Fei, also came as guests on that episode. It was during the first game, Job Scramble (members and guests are inside the bungalow and dancing to the song that is played while the production team announce the kind of job they have to do, when the song stops they have to rush to get out of the bungalow, only the first person to come out of the bungalow will get to do the job) game, when the production team played Baek’s duet hit song with 2PM’s Ok Taecyeon titled “My Ear Candy”. Lee and Haha, who both were already finished their job and became spectators outside the bungalow, got into the rhythm and danced along, parodying the infamous dance couple of the song. Hilarious!

Moon Hee Jun – Korean’s Luis Suarez Has Come! (Episode 209)

The original idols from the 90s came as guests on the 209th installment of RM. One of them was H.O.T’s leader, Moon Hee Jun. The episode was aired on August 17th. It was during the first game called Triangular Water Basketball, when Moon suddenly did a very unexpected and surprising thing; biting Haha’s butt! To make it clear, he was belong to the blue team along with other 90s original idols and Kim Jong Kook, while Haha was belong to the green team along with new generation idols, and other RM members were belong to the red team. Therefore, the three teams were competing against each other in the game. Kai from the green team was the witness of Moon’s despicable move and dubbed him as Suarez (a soccer player who’s well known for biting his opponent). No more explanation needed; it’s surprisingly funny!

Ailee – Supersonic Karaoke Show (Episode 211)

The Diva with powerful voice, Ailee, became one of the guests on the 211th episode of RM. It was broadcasted on August 31st. She was partnered up with Gary, and the first game they did was the High Altitude Karaoke Room (they must score over 90 points by singing while riding on the amusement ride) on a rollercoaster. She did her best to overcome her fear and pull it off with her mesmerizing vocal. Yet the rollercoaster wasn’t a joke! Singing, screaming, sing...screaming again, screaming while singing, and screaming all over again! Amazingly hilarious!

Seo Woo & Lee Yoo Ri – My Heels, My Pride! (Episode 213)

The 213th installment of RM featured Korean top notch actresses who are famous for strong and evil roles as guests; two of them were Seo Woo and Lee Yoo Ri. This episode was aired on September 21st. It was nice to see those fierce ladies showed the different side from ones they usually show on screen through the drama characters. A big laugh came from Seo and Lee during the preparation before they did the mud clay battle game. The two had to take off their shoes with heels and changed it into waterproof rubber boots. Yet Seo and Lee couldn’t let go of their heels easily, causing ruckus from the male members, as it was the first time for the men for having such cheeky (in terms of heels) female guests like them (changing a pair of shoes was taking quite some times, Seo took a rock and stood on it as if it was heels, Lee walked while tiptoeing, and all of them ended up talking while squatting down in order to give consideration for those two). The cheekiness even continued during the preparation before they did the carwash game. Seeing Seo and Lee stood side by side, Ji Suk Jin commented that their height was similar, causing the two suddenly tip their toes in an instant. Cutely hilarious!

Wang Ji Hye & Lee Kwang Soo – Bestfriends’ Face Off (Episode 219)

Beautiful actress Wang Ji Hye appeared as one of the guests on the episode 219 of RM. The episode was broadcasted on November 2nd. Wang had worked together with Lee Kwang Soo in a drama series production and they’ve been good friends since then (they’re around the same age too). Since the first entrance, Wang and Lee showed an entertaining bickering between two bestfriends. The climax was during the second mission when they did the phenomenal Of Course game (you have to answer any question from your opponent with “of course” in order to win) as a (pemanasan) game before they did the actual game, Corn Kernel Odd or Even (guess whether the number of corn kernels the opponent has is odd or even). This was when it all happened; the bestfriends were finally getting to face off! No one seemed to back off, therefore it was so thrilling yet hilarious.

Bobby Kim – Time of Suffering for Bobby (Episode 221)

The 221st installment of RM was a parade of singers with a total of 8 singers of different genres and generations coming as guests. One of them was Bobby Kim. That was his first appearance on RM yet who knows that the soul vocalist could display a very hilarious side of him? The episode was aired on November 16th, and it was during the second mission when they did the spectacular Battle of the Moles game, Bobby came out as the representative from his team (consisted of Gary, Jung In, and Bobby Kim himself) for the first round of the game. He had to dig a tunnel in the dirt to pass through under the wooden blocks (that was the first hurdle). He struggled, and struggled, and struggled all over again, until the point where his body was all covered up with dirt. It gave big laughters for all RM members and other guests, especially Narsha, who couldn’t stop laughing whenever she sees him. So funny! Addition to that, Gary’s reaction towards Bobby’s clumsiness was awesome! “Bobby, hyung~~~!”

Kim Woo Bin – Expression of Determination (Episode 225)

It was on the 225th episode of RM when Kim Woo Bin appeared as a guest along with his co-star, Lee Hyun Woo, in order to promote their new releases movie titled “The Technicians”. The episode was broadcasted on December 14th. It was the third time already Kim became a guest on the show and his determination to win the game was burning hot like a fire. The climax was during the second mission when they did the Staring Game (the one who blinks his/her eyes first is losing). Kim gave his all by turning his face into as ugly as possible to make his opponent (Gary) laughing and blinking his eyes. And guess what, where did Woo Bin go? It’s hilarious!

Soyou and Junggigo celebrate their "Some" win on a television music program - source: kpopstarz.com

The harmony of man and woman’s voices. From the melancholic heart-broken ballad until the cheerful heart-fluttering pop, K-Pop universe has surprised us with many beautiful male-female duets in 2014. As the 13th post for 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014, here is the list of The Most Beautiful K-Pop Collaboration of 2014. Please enjoy~

7. Huh Gak & Jung Eunji – Break Up To Make Up (이제 그만 싸우자)

The labelmates open up the list on number seven, the male soloist Huh Gak and Jung Eunji from the girl group Apink. They sang a beautiful pop duet song titled “Break Up To Make Up (이제 그만 싸우자)”, which was released as a single “A Cube for Season #Sky Blue” on July 8th. Despite their age gap (Huh is 9 years older than Jung), the harmony of their vocals stood up and blended well in the song’s sweet melody, as it tells about a man and a woman who are in a (presumably a long-term one) relationship and separating after having their biggest fight. However, everything doesn’t get better after their breakup, and that’s when they both realize that they should make up. “So let me tell you again and again, let’s stop fighting.”

6. Hyorin & Joo Young (feat. Iron) – Erase (지워)

Another labelmates are on this number six, Hyorin from the girl group Sistar and the male soloist Joo Young, who collaborated for special Starship X collaborative project. They released a pop R n’ B song titled “Erase (지워)” in a single album on November 20th. Hyorin’s husky voice goes very well with Joo’s charming tone, making a sexy harmony as the song tells about two lovers that become distant as they are not able to speak up their true feelings and misunderstanding keeps pilling up between them. Walking away is always the easiest way out, yet the best way is never the easiest one. “I’m not that great of a person. Don’t think too hard. Don’t pretend to be nice. We always had that kind of love.”

5. Shin Hye Sung & Oak Joo Hyun – Love...After (사랑...후에)

The main vocalist of the longest-running idol group Shinhwa, Shin Hye Sung, is on the number five position with his collaboration with female singer, Oak Joo Hyun. Oak lent her beautiful voice to collaborate with Shin for his new release titled “Love...After (사랑...후에)”. The pop R n’ B song is a remake of Shin’s solo hits, combining two different song titled “Love... Love... (사랑... 사랑...)” and “After... (후에...)”. It was released on October 31th as the single album, “Remake Project ‘Once Again’ #4”. Their mesmerizing melancholic voices flow along the heartwrenching melody, as this song tells about two lovers who have to separate though they still deeply in love with each other. Indeed, love is a hard path to walk on, yet love itself is the thing that gives us faith and strength to keep walking on it. “This path that we have walked through hand in hand, let’s continue to walk even though we have parted.”

4. Lyn & Leo – Blossom Tears (꽃잎놀이)

Ballad senior meets ballad junior, Lyn and Leo’s mesmerizing collaboration with “Blossom Tears (꽃잎놀이)” is on number four of the list. The pop ballad track was released as a single titled “Y.BIRD from Jellyfish with Lyn X Leo” on August 5th for VIXX’s company collaborative project. At first I was surprised when I know that the Queen of soundtrack, Lyn, was going to release a duet song with the main vocal of boy group VIXX, Leo. Since he was still considered as a rookie, a question suddenly popped up in my head; could he keep it up with Lyn? Well, after hearing the song, I was more surprised. He could keep up very well! Their harmony sounds so heartbreakingly beautiful as they sing a song about a long-term couple who are having their hardest time in the relationship and facing the edge of breakup. As long as the love is still there, no matter how hard the situation is, a relationship is worth fighting for. Just take a look back to those times you’ve spent together, reminisce, and contemplate. “I was lonely every day from protecting you.” “I’m sorry for the painful times, I won’t lose you again.”

3. Jung Joon Young & Younha – Just The Way You Are (달리 함께)

Sweet collaboration between both singer-musician, Jung Joon Young and Younha, “Just The Way You Are (달리 함께)”, opens the big three of the list. The two had collaborated before when Jung was still a contestant of Superstar K4. He was always a big fan of Younha. And now after he has debuted as a singer, Jung finally has his dream coming true by having a duet song with his idol. “Just The Way You Are (달리 함께)” was released as a single album on May 29th, right one month before Jung having a comeback with his second mini album, “TEENAGER”. The pop-rock song with medium tempo showcases a dynamic yet heartwarming harmony between Jung and Younha, as it tells about two people who love each other despite their shortage and weakness; that regardless of their lackness, they’re beautiful together. “Even if you get shaken up even more, it’s okay. Even if you get even more nervous, it’s okay. It’s so beautiful that you and I are together. Walk with me like this.”

2. Taeyeon & Jonghyun – Breath (숨소리)

The title track of SM The Ballad’s second album, “Breath (숨소리)” performed by Taeyeon and Jonghyun, is on the runner-up position. The main vocalists from Girls’ Generation and SHINee were teamed up together to sing the main single for SM Entertainment’s collaboration album project titled “SM The Ballad Vol. 2 – Breath”, which was released on February 13th. The heart-wrenching ballad track was also served as the theme song for Mnet’s mini-drama titled “Mimi” (2014). As the lyrics tell about two broken up people who long for each other so much that they can’t take it, Jonghyun and Taeyeon duke it out in a melancholic yet powerful harmony. Indeed, when the love and relationship left a very deep impression in someone, even a single phone call could destroy the long hard effort to move on. “When tears are falling like this, I don’t even know what to do with my little cherished memories, because it hurts so much. I know that we promised to let each other go, but when I keep thinking about you, when it’s so hard that I can’t take it, just like this, at least please let me hear your breath.”

1. Soyu & Jung Gigo (feat. Lil Boi) – Some (썸)

Topping the music charts for weeks, endless parodies from other singers and entertainers, right here on the number one position, The Most Beautiful K-Pop Collaboration of 2014 goes to “Some (썸)” by Soyu and Jung Gigo. The pop R n’ B song was released as a single on February 7th. The word ‘beautiful’ really stands well for this duet song. First, Soyu and Jung’s vocals harmony sounds so sweet and tender. Second, the melody sounds brightly heart-warming that it goes nicely with the vocals harmony. Last but not least, the lyrics tell about two people who clearly have special feelings toward each other yet they don’t come clear about their relationship status; the situation which happens a lot in youth relationship nowadays. With the playful yet close-to-the-reality-of-youth-relationship-nowadays lyrics, addictive melody, and beautiful harmony, indeed, this song deserves this top position. Love isn’t real until it’s being said and done. “These days, it feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine, but you’re not. It feels like I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours, but I’m not. Don’t just laugh like you don’t know, and stop this now, be real with me.”

Following the 7 Best TV Personalities of 2014: Male Edition, here is the Female Edition for the 12th post of 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014. Still, for this list, I will pick seven most entertaining female figures in some television programs that I regularly watch every week; SBS’ “Running Man”, SBS’ “Roommate”, and MBC’s “We Got Married”. Actually, making both of the list is quite hard. For the Male Edition case, that was because there are so many male television personalities, and most of Korean television shows are dominated by men (even the big three of The Nation’s MCs are men). On the other side, for this Female Edition, I find it hard because there aren’t so many female television personalities around in the industry. Sadly, it has been so well known that Korean television shows industry is lack of famous women figures, whether they’re hosts, gag women, even regular members of variety shows. After KBS’ “Invincible Youth”, I rarely see a variety show that the most regular members of it is mostly consist of women. Even now when MBC has made the female version of “Real Men” (it’s called “Real Men: Female Soldier”), it didn’t caught much attention unlike the male version. However, a show is incomplete without women. The production team is really aware of this situation, and even in an all-men show like “2 Days and 1 Night”, they have a special segment called Morning Angel where they invite (most of the time) female guest. Therefore, as a woman, I have to make this list in order to appreciate those female figures on television shows who have worked hard to inspire and prove that women can do well too in variety shows.

7. Park Mi Sun
The list begins with the senior female MC from MBC’s “We Got Married”, Park Mi Sun, on number seven. Among the female MCs, I would dub her as the female Yoo Jae Suk. She has the capability to balance the situation. One of the main reasons why “We Got Married” still continues as the long running television show is because of her. Though she just sits in the studio and watch the couples as the panel MC, Park always gives meaningful comments, and sometimes hilarious ones that could crack up the whole studio with laughter. Sometimes I also watch her on KBS’ “Happy Together” where she is the host along with her bestfriend, Yoo Jae Suk. She isn’t being overshadowed by the male hosts and that’s the power of experience.

6. Hong Jin Young
Hong Jin Young is next on number six of the list. The female soloist might be well-known as the rising Goddess of Trot Music with her mesmerizing voice, but in this list, she is the bride from MBC’s “We Got Married” (WGM). Joining the show as the virtual wife of actor Namgoong Min, Hong takes the lead in the beginning since she has more experience in variety show than her virtual husband (WGM is Namgoong’s first variety show). The trot singer shows her charming confidence and cheerful as she’s being a playful wife for her older calm husband. As the oldest couple of the show (in the matter of ages), they both show a dare and touchy relationship, making the audience flutter in excitement. She once showed up shortly in KBS’ “2 Days and 1 Night” and SBS’ “Roommate”, and also came twice as a guest on SBS’ “Running Man”. Though that was just in a short time, she could bright up the mood with her cute cheerful attitude.

5. KARA’s Heo Youngji
Moving up to number five, here is the youngest member (maknae) of the second season of SBS’ “Roommate”, Heo Youngji. Recently joined the famous girl group, KARA, Youngji gained a lot of attention after becoming the new regular members line-up for “Roommate” season two, with the alligator-like mute laughter as her signature. Together with Wang Jackson, both make a cute bickering maknae couple who always light up the mood of the house. Don’t know exactly why but I love so much to see this couple. I always don’t get it when people dissing a certain celebrity couple, moreover when they diss a couple that is very adorable and lovable like Youngji and Jackson (please, narrow-minded people, just mind your own business, it’s just a TV show afterall, and who do you think you are to diss even if this couple becomes real?). They’re hard-working youngsters, and I always fall so hard for this kind of maknae.

4. GIRLS’ DAY’s Kim Yura
Again from the MBC’s “We Got Married”, Kim Yura is on the number four positions. The member of sexy-cute girl group, Girl’s Day, is the bride of actor Hong Jong Hyun. As the youngest couple on the show (in terms of age), Yura and Hong –well known as JjongAh couple– approach the audience and grab the heart with their shy ‘first-love-like’ attitude. Yura deserves some extra points in here, for her never ending efforts to make the relationship works. Well, as we all know, Hong is a kind of cold city guy at first and he has a hard time to adjust with the variety show (it’s the first time for him). Fortunately, Yura is a bright Princess of burning hot fire who could melt down the heart of the Ice Prince. It won’t work like that if it’s not Yura.

3. Lee Gook Joo
2014 is the year for Lee Gook Joo. The gag woman from the second season of SBS’ “Roommate” is on number three of the list. Before joining the show as the new member for the season two, I saw her once as a guest on SBS’ “Running Man”. She was sooo hilarious! Therefore I was anticipating so much when I figured out that she would be joining “Roommate” season two. And guess what, she’s never disappointing! One of the reasons why season two is a way better and funnier than season one is because of her presence. Anyway, “Roommate” was never the same again since she came into the show, in a way that it became more interesting to watch.

2. Kim So Eun
On the runner-up position is our lovely newly-wed bride from MBC’s “We Got Married”, actress Kim So Eun. Who knows that being the wife of Song Jae Rim would be a very difficult and risky task to do? I bet that out of all women in all over the world, only Kim who could pull it off so well. If it’s not for her, this couple won’t be as much interesting as it is now. I bet that out of all women in all over the world, only Kim who could keep it up with Song’s cheesiness, romance, pranks, affection, jokes, and skinships. She’s the Queen of push-and-pull and I looove the ‘ping pong’ between her and her husband! This couple is satisfying me in every way; they have eye-candy appearance and common-relationship behaviour with their comfortable and natural action and reaction (this is what a real married –and being in love– couple is!). Kim is a great feat for Song. Unless it’s her, this couple won’t be as much lovable as it is now.

1. Song Ji Hyo
And now, topping the list is the only woman of SBS’ “Running Man” (RM), actress Song Ji Hyo. And so The Best TV Personality: Female Edition goes to the Ace of RM! Being around the same six men (playful –and sometimes annoying– ones) for more than four years is not an easy thing to do, yet Song is the one who can cope with it very well. Instead of being overshadowed by them, Song is able to stand out and even becoming the ace; winning most of the games and gold prize, and is more reliable than most of other male regular members of RM. A kind of real tough lady; my kind of lady! Beside her solo action, she makes the Monday Couple with Kang Gary becoming one of the main mood-boosters of the show. The push-and-pull for these four years is always something that everyone loves to watch over. Indeed, RM would be incomplete if Song was not around.

I find it quite fascinating when I see that there are a lot of international fans who regularly watch “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”. Why? Because unlike any other variety shows or music programs, “Immortal Songs 2” is in between. Moreover, idols –who are known as the front runner of Korean Wave nowadays– are not always appear on this show. Besides, this program showcases Korean classic hits, which international fans are unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, I always feel grateful to be able to discover this program and regularly watch it until now. “Immortal Songs 2” has opened up some new perspectives about Korean music industry, beyond the idols trend. It introduces me to some talented vocalists and musicians; like ALi, Jung Dong Ha, JK Kim Dong Wook, Moon Myung Jin, Im Tae Kyung, and many more. Most of them are even don’t have the chance to shine among the mainstream trend of idols. Therefore, as the 11th post for 2014 Review: The Best and The Most of 2014, I will make a list of The Most Outstanding Newcomers on “Immortal Songs 2” of 2014. No need to say more, let’s follow the list.

7. So Hyang
On the bottom of the list, the number seven position, here is the female soloist, So Hyang. She appeared for the first time on the Michael Bolton special episode, when she took over the stage like a hurricane with her fabulous performance. Her performance brought her the winning trophy (plus, Michael Bolton said that her performance was spectacular!), making her one of performers who win the trophy on their first appearance on the show. She could be ranked higher, but since she only made one appearance and hasn’t made another visit on the show after that episode, she’s right here opening the list on this position. Anyway, I hope I could see more of her on the show in 2015. Please comeback, Miss So~

6. Lena Park
On the number six position, here is the female soloist, Park Jung Hyun a.k.a Lena Park. The Queen of R n’ B first appeared on Lee Sun Hee special episode. She was the first performer during that special episode, just in her first visit on the show. Yet she scored more than 400 points and successfully won several rounds with her mesmerizing performance. Park could be ranked higher, but so far she only made two appearances on the show and hadn’t won a trophy yet. Nevertheless, I would like to see her performances on “Immortal Songs 2” in the future. I’ll be waiting, Miss Park!

5. DICKPUNKS
On the number five position, among the soloists I have on this list, here is the only band that successfully makes it into the list, DICKPUNKS! First appeared on the “My Lovely Hometown Special” episode, the piano-based ensemble band rocked the stage of “Immortal Songs 2” with their youthful and burning spirit of ex-indie musicians. The runner-up winner of Mnet’s “Superstar K4” became the first part winner of the two-parts “My Lovely Hometown Special” episode. Kim Tae Hyun (vocal), Kim Hyun Woo (piano/keyboard), Kim Jae Heung (bass), and Park Ga Ram (drum) are being a surprise-giver and mood-booster everytime they make an appearance on the show. I can’t help but anticipating their upcoming performance in 2015. DICKPUNKS, fighting!

4. Yoon Min Soo
On the number four position is Yoon Min Soo, who first appeared on Park Geon Ho special episode. The master of ballad gave his all and won the trophy in his first visit on the show. As expected from the maestro, he showcased a wonderful performance everytime he came in “Immortal Songs 2”. After that, he frequently came to the show and even won another trophy along with his apprentice, Shin Young Jae, with a beautiful duet of two male ballad vocalists. I adore him everytime I watch “Dad, Where are You Going?” as he is being a very reliable father for her son, but I love him even more everytime I watch him singing on the stage. Go, Daddy, gooo~!

3. Gummy
On the number three position, here is the female soloist, Gummy. The woman who broke the record for the highest points, just in her first appearance on the show, she is the one and only! It was on the Joo Hyun Mi special when she performed for the first time on “Immortal Songs 2”, breaking the record as well as winning the trophy of that episode. Well, it was a prove to everyone that her decision to get out from YG Entertainment wasn’t a bad idea afterall. Instead, it was a great choice! Because unless, we probably couldn’t see her marvelous performance on the show. Anyway, her action in 2015 is anticipated. Well done, Gummy!

2. Kim Jong Seo
On the runner-up position is the prominent rock vocalist, Kim Jong Seo. Just the fact that a legendary singer like him was joining the show as a performer instead of a legend itself was so fascinating. Moreover, Kim was still got it! He first appeared on the Joo Hyun Mi special episode and broke the record for the highest points with his debut performance on the show (though some minutes later Gummy broke the record in the same episode). Though he didn’t win the trophy in that episode and the episode after, he won the two consecutives episodes later on. More important than winning, he always gives his best in every performance. His youthful spirit and soul is the best among the senior singers in the industry and I personally think that he’s a great role-model for all his juniors. There’s no limit for his man!

1.Son Seung Yeon
On the top of the list, the number one position, The Most Outstanding Newcomer on “Immortal Songs 2” of 2014 goes to the female soloist, Son Seung Yeon. The winner of the first season of The Voice of Korea first appeared on the Lee Chi Hyun special episode as a guest in the collaboration performance of male soloist, The One. Together with The One, their collaboration won the trophy of that episode. Being dubbed as the monster rookie vocalist, Son then made her way into the show as a regular performer after that episode and even won the trophy for herself (that was on the “Summer Special Part 2 Campus Band” episode), just right in her second appearance on the show as well as her first solo performance on it. After then, she was on the winning streak, making a total 3 wins out of her 11 performances on the show, making her got the title as ‘the second ALi’ or ‘the next ALi’ (ALi has won 8 trophies so far and is the record holder for the most number of winning up to this date). 2014 in “Immortal Songs 2” has been definitely the year for Son. She evolved in each episode through her performances. She doesn’t afraid to try many kinds of genre yet she always does the best in every single way. Son is only 23 and she has a long way to go. Therefore, i’ll be highly anticipating her performance on 2015. You go, girl!
