“There was so much I wanted to say, but I couldn’t say anything. We said that we were okay as we were comforting each other in pain. When I look back, we were only happy, we haven’t let each other go.” –Jonghyun & Taeyeon (SM The Ballad), Breath (Korean version) [translated lyrics]

"SM The Ballad Vol. 2 - Breath" mini album cover by SM The Ballad - source: en.wikipedia.org

SM Entertainment is one of the biggest entertainment labels in South Korea which is well-known for its always-good-looking and multi-talented idol groups. It was four years ago when SME first created a project group that could emphasize the vocal ability of many talented singers  under its wing. This project called SM The Ballad. On November 2010, this project was debuted with all-male-vocalists line-up that consisted of Kyuhyun of Super Junior, Jonghyun of SHINee, Jay Kim of Trax, and a rookie new face named Jino, the new SME’s trainee back then. Just like the project’s name, SM The Ballad focused on singing ballad songs rather than dance pop routines that idol groups always show. Their first mini album was considerably success, making all the fans were anticipating for their comeback soon after. But then, Jay Kim was joining the army to fulfill his duty, and Jino was neither being seen again nor debuting, making the comeback was still unclear and putting the fans on the waiting mode.
Finally, after a long four years of waiting, in the beginning of 2014 SME announced that SM The Ballad would make a comeback with a line-up change. This new formation later was revealed would be consisted of Jonghyun of SHINee, Yesung of Super Junior, Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation, Krystal of f(x), Chen of EXO, Zhou Mi of Super Junior-M, Max Changmin of TVXQ, and Zhang Liyin. On February 13th 2014, SM The Ballad’s second mini album was released, titled “SM The Ballad Vol. 2 – Breath”. Prior to the release, the lead single of their second mini album, “Breath (숨소리)”, was released on February 10th 2014. This song is a duet and released in three different versions by language. The Korean version is sung by Jonghyun and Taeyeon, meanwhile the Chinese version is sung by Chen and Zhang Liyin, and also the Japanese version by Max Changmin and Krystal. All of those three versions’ lyrics are centered about a broken-up couple, but are told in a different words and languages. The focus of this review is the Korean version, which is performed by Jonghyun and Taeyeon. This solely because Korean languange is more ear-catchy for me rather than the Chinese and Japanese.

“Breath” depicts two people who just broke up, and now they long for each other, so much that they can’t take it. They used to be together as lovers, but somehow now have separated. Their separation has caused worse damages more than they could ever imagine. And when one of them can’t bear the longing, out of nowhere, he just grabbed the phone and called the other one. “Without even knowing, I was holding on the phone, “It’s me, it’s been a long time”. Because it was so hard, because I felt bad if I held you back, because I regret letting you go, I just let out a sigh.” On the other side, she received a call that surprised her. She least expecting it, but most desiring it. Hearing that familiar voice again, and in just a second, all of longing feelings brought her to tears. “Because I was so surprised, I couldn’t speak. I was holding on to my trembling heart. “Are you struggling a lot? Where are you now?” Before I could even ask, tears fell down just by hearing the sound of your breath.” Through that one phone call, they realized that these days without each other were like living in hell. Yet both of them were too afraid to tell the other that they had hard times alone. So, instead of telling the truth, they just let out a sigh foolishly. “Breathing, opening my eyes every day, barely getting through each day, I couldn’t tell you that those things were harder than dying, in case you would get worried. So, like a fool, I just let out a sigh.”
There were so many things that they want to say to each other, but those words were just left unsaid. Instead, they were lying to each other, saying that they were doing just fine. “There was so much I wanted to say, but I couldn’t say anything. We said that we were okay as we were comforting each other in pain. When I look back, we were only happy, we haven’t let each other go.” But through that one phone call, one thing couldn’t be avoided; it was their flooding memories and lingering affection toward each other, and it was clearly still there though they didn’t say anything. And it was hurt so much until the point that they neither could say nor do anything about it. “When tears are falling like this, I don’t even know what to do with my little cherished memories, because it hurts so much. I know that we promised to let each other go, but when I keep thinking about you, when it’s so hard that I can’t take it, just like this, at least please let me hear your breath.” So tears were falling. For now, for them, just by hearing each other’s breath was more than enough. “I know that we promised to let each other go, but when I keep thinking about you, when it’s so hard that I can’t take it, just like this, at least please let me hear your breath.”

At first, I was so excited knowing that Jonghyun and Taeyeon would collaborate for SM The Ballad. I was highly anticipating to see their performance. Well, the recording itself wasn’t disappointing, it was very great in fact. Just like what I expected, their voices matched well in harmony. Moreover, “Breath” is a very beautiful song. Hence, I was quite surprised when I saw their live duet performances. Sadly, it was quite disappointing. Why? Because there was no chemistry. During the live performance, it seemed like both Jonghyun and Taeyeon were just duking it out to outshine each other and stand out by themselves instead of supporting each other as a duet partner. It was so lack of chemistry that should be found in every duet performance. Fortunately, the pain from that disappointment was healed a little by the beautiful music video, well, only a little.
A music video (MV) for “Breath” was released on February 12th 2014. Beside focusing on the singers, the MV also contains some footages from a mini-series titled “Mimi”. “Mimi” is a four-episodes mini-series broadcasted by a television cable channel, Mnet, on February until March 2014, starring Shim Changmin (Max Changmin’s stage name as an actor) and Moon Ga Young. It was based on a 2007 movie titled “M”, which was starred Kang Dong Won and Lee Yeon Hee. It turned out that “Breath” was the theme song of the mini-series, which the storyline depicts a man who has partial memory loss about his first love that had been separated form him due to a tragic incident, and he slowly begins to reminisce as his long-forgotten memories are resurrecting. This song’s lyrics suit well with the series’ storyline. Despite all lacks that Jonghyun and Taeyeon have during the live performance, “Breath” is still a beautiful track. And of course, as a fan, I feel so glad that SM The Ballad has come back.

“That’s how I found out how tormenting it is to have a happy memory, because I can’t go back even if I wanted to.” –Han Tae Sang (When A Man Loves, 2013)

People are wanderers. And what are they looking for? What are exactly they trying hard to find? What are they searching for in this harsh life? Love? Dreams? Most of the time, people differentiate between love and dreams. Sometimes, people make dreams as the reason for them to give up love, and vice versa. People tend to treat those two things as if they’re different things. Sometimes, people don’t realize that love and dreams are actually the same. Most of the time, people just won’t admit the fact that dreams are also a form of love. Dreams are the love itself. The next question is; what is love? Indeed, people are wanderer. They wonder their whole life searching for the meaning of love, looking for the true love itself, when sometimes they don’t even realize, that love is everywhere, in many forms that it could turn to be. A South Korean series titled “When A Man Loves” depicts the journey of a man in his discovery of love; the journey that leads him to find that there’s more to life than he used to know.

Ia meringankan bunga hutang ayah Mi Do. Namun Tae Sang berhasil menyelamatkan Mi Do.
Jae Hee jatuh cinta pada Mi Do.

“When A Man Loves”, atau yang dikenal juga dengan judul “When A Man Falls in Love”, adalah serial melodrama yang terdiri dari 20 episode.
Seo Mi Do menyerahkan mimpinya demi keluarganya. Lee Chang Hee menyerahkan dirinya demi adiknya.
Atas nama cinta, manusia kerap kali memaksakan kehendaknya. Atas nama cinta, Baek Seung Joo menghalalkan segala cara untuk mendapatkan Han Tae Sang. Atas nama cinta, Lee Jae Hee melakukan segala usaha untuk memiliki Seo Mi Do. Cinta atau obsesi? Kenalilah.
Cinta membawa seorang Han Tae Sang ‘menemukan’ dirinya kembali, melalui sosok seorang Seo Mi Do. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for her, when a man loves a woman.

Selalu mudah memang untuk jatuh cinta pada serial ‘eye-candy’ seperti “When A Man Loves”. I can’t help but fall in love with Han Tae Sang–Seo Mi Do couple. Secara keseluruhan, “When A Man Loves” sangat menarik untuk diikuti.

It was a hot issue!
This song wasn’t very popular when it was first released, but it became a hit after a while. It became a big hit among the younger generations at the time and laid the foundations of Korean pop music.

Kim Jong Seo ketika membawakan lagu "Affection" pada program "Immortal Songs 2" episode 153

“Affection” is a song about a woman who undergoes a breakup with her long-term boyfriend; about the lingering affection that’s hard to resist. As she has lost for words, all she wants to do is just running into his arms and crying it all out. How could that be? After all of those years they spent together, does it end just like this? Is it really the ending? As those questions keep spinning in her head, she has lost for words. “Today I want to bury my face in your chest and just cry. Even after all of those years, our love is finally shaken by tears.” There are so many things that she wants to say to him; that she want to ask him. But those words are just in the tip of her tongue. And in the end, there is no word comes out; everything is just left unsaid. “How much longer it will take for me to forget you? I can’t even get close to you because I can’t say any word.” The reality feels like a dream, no, a nightmare. And she feels like living in that nightmare for real. ‘How much longer will it take for me to forget you?’ That one question keeps haunting her. Because she feels like she will never forget him for the rest of her life, in some way. Because it feels so hard, to lose someone you used to have for a long time. “Everytime I stand in front of you, why do I become so small? Everytime I stand behind you, my eyes filled with tears.” Indeed, everybody is weak in front of love. Even the strongest person could be so weak when it comes to love. In the end, she holds onto the memories of them. Perhaps until someday when the time finally washes away the lingering affection that still remain now. “I just keep in silence because of love, I am your woman. And as long as our memories remain, you are my man.”
With no fancy arrangements, he reinterpreted the song with his voice alone. The charismatic rocker rocks the stage with just the power of his voice, like a confident monologue. Moreover, the song itself has the kind of touching power. So, without arranged it much, Kim’s rendition of “Affection” touched the audiences.

“Everytime I stand in front of you, why do I become so small? Everytime I stand behind you, my eyes filled with tears. I just keep in silence because of love, I am your woman. And as long as our memories remain, you are my man.” –Kim Soo Hee, Affection [translated lyrics]

Together, we listen, watch, and rejoice every moment through every song in “Immortal Songs 2” third anniversary.
He opened the envelope with the winner’s name, and was too overwhelmed to announce the winner.

It rarely happens to me but I was pondering for quite a while to understand the meaning of its lyrics. And then, every thought had led me to this; “Tragic Love” is a sad song about sad love; about two people who have to separate because their love isn’t meant to be. And there they’re standing now, in the edge of a broken heart, hugging each other while consoling each other through the warmth of love; trembling while holding in their pain and tears to burst out. “With praying hands of love, I embrace you when you’re trembling. Within our hug, love spreads and touches as our hearts meet.” Having nowhere to be angry at, he throws his anger toward the blowing wind, to the cruel time. As she’s weeping down in tears and sadness. “Amidst the circling wind of the season, I throw a stone of sadness as we break up. Tears run down your cheeks and you bite your lips.” Though it’s pointless, though it won’t change a thing, though it won’t make anything better, he apologizes to her. For his weakness, for his incapability, he apologizes to her. “Please forgive me. I will ask the water birds why the waves surge upon the shore, I will ask, I will ask the migratory birds why the storm rages upon the sea.” Having no one to ask why this must happen to their love, he asks the world. Asking why their love is broken is like asking why the waves surge upon the shore; it’s like asking why the storm rages upon the sea. There’s no answer; no reason. It just happen.
The cheers of female fans after the word “pray” established the fan culture in South Korea’s music industry. See? This is only one of many reasons why Cho is a very-well-respected legendary singer among South Korean artists. Even the icon of soul with magical voice, JK Kim Dong Wook, found it tough to reinterpret Cho’s song. But he’s not the icon of soul for no reason. Indeed, JK gave a marvelous rendition of “Tragic Love” with his deep voice. It showed his colours without losing the original soul of the song. No need to say more, the performance was resonating the song; it’s tragically beautiful.

“Tears run down your cheeks and you bite your lips. Please forgive me. I will ask the water birds why the waves surge upon the shore, I will ask, I will ask the migratory birds why the storm rages upon the sea.”

“Wrongful Meeting” is a song about someone who’s being betrayed by his lover and friend. It all begins with a simple yet regretful act; introduce his lover and his friend to each other in a meeting on one day. Who knows that the simple meeting could turn out wrong? “Because I trusted my friend as much as I trusted you, I introduced you to my friend without thinking twice about it. After that meeting, we simply got together a lot; having a good time and hanging out together. But at what point did such encounters turn wrong? As I was slowly stepping into mysterious apprehension, you were paying more attention to my friend than me, and slowly distancing me.” It all begins with a simple meeting. Who knows that the trust in a friendship could be broken so easily? Who knows that the love in a relationship could be betrayed so easily? “Because I trusted my friend as much as I loved you, I simply hung out naturally together with you. But since when did our trust begin to crack? I did not know, I kept having this awkward feeling. And the longer the time we spent hanging out like that, I felt that you were slowly drifting away from me, and then I sensed it. You were more interested in my friend than me.” Betrayal is always hurt. And indeed, people whom we hold most dear are the people who have the stongest ability to hurt us. What hurt more is the fact that we lose both love and friendship at the same time. Moreover, we didn’t have any idea that it would come. And it all began with a wrongful meeting. “Then on that day when you and I got into a big fight, you and my friend stopped calling and began avoiding me. Then I finally realized that everything had gone wrong. You and my friend had already turned into lovers. I cried, thinking how this could be happening, because I had to lose both my love and friendship. Another friend of mine tapped me on my shoulder and told me to forget it all, but I don’t think I can.”

A dancing prodigy meets a quality rap, Taemin and Amber’s collaboration has brought “Wrongful Meeting” to the next level. This featuring is fabulous! Moreover, the modern dance electro-pop arrangement proves that “Wrongful Meeting” is never wrong. Indeed, it’s an everlasting immortal song.

“I cried, thinking how this could be happening, because I had to lose both my love and friendship. Another friend of mine tapped me on my shoulder and told me to forget it all, but I don’t think I can.” –Kim Gun Mo, Wrongful Meeting [translated lyrics]
