“These
days, it feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine but you’re not. It
feels like I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours but I’m not. What kind of
relationship are we in? I’m confused, don’t be aloof. It feels like we’re
lovers, it seems like we’re lovers but we’re not. Whenever you see me, you act
so vague to me. These days, I hate to hear that I’m just like a friend for you.”

"Some" single cover by Soyou & Jung Gigo - source: en.wikipedia.org |
Back
in the beginning of the year, there was a sweet duet song released in South
Korea. This song is called “Some”, a collaboration of Soyou –a member of girl
group Sistar– and hip hop singer, Jung Gigo. This song also features rapper Lil
Boi from the hip hop duo, Geeks. It was released as a digital single on February
7, 2014, and received an all-kill as it ranked 1st on all major music real-time
charts, such as Melon, Soribada, Daum, Naver, Olleh, Mnet, and Genie. This
song’s English title, “Some”, is only the anglicized version of its Korean title
pronounciation, “썸” (“Sseom”). Meanwhile, the meaning of the song doesn’t have
correlation with “some” as in English meaning, but it has to do with “sseom” as
in Korean meaning instead.
In Korean, “썸” (“Sseom”) refers to two people who have a
special relationship more than just friends, but less than lovers. In Indonesian
terms, it sometimes refers to “gebetan”, or in a more frankly term, it’s some
kind like “hubungan tanpa status” or “teman tapi mesra”. In English term,
sometimes it’s simply called as “it’s complicated”. It’s a situation where both
of the man and the woman are dating with each other, obviously having a feeling
for each other, but none of them are eager to say the “L” word first, or ask
the other person to be their lover first, which makes the status of their
relationship is still unclear because of this condition. There are many causes
behind this “sseom” status, but mostly is because the man is still waiting for
the right opportunity to confess the love and ask the woman to be his
girlfriend. Or, on the other hand, the man is still in doubt whether to confess
or not because the woman’s attitude towards him is still so ambiguous, whether she
really likes him too or just being nice.
“Some”, just like what its title meant to be in
Korean term, is a song about two people who are “sseom”. In this song, these
two people are feeling frustated and desperate with this unclear relationship status
between them, while in some ways, they’re still holding hopes that it would
work out for them somehow. “Sometimes, I get annoyed without even knowing, but my feelings for you
haven’t changed. Maybe I’m the weird one, I thought as I struggled by myself.
While tossing and turning alone in an empty room, the TV plays reruns of
yesterday’s drama, as I hold my phone that doesn’t ring until I sleep.” Actually,
what they want is just simple; to end this complicated situation and just be in
a relationship for real. “I want to open
my eyes to your text every morning, I want to fall asleep with your voice at
the end of the day. On the weekends, I want to hug you in front of a lot of
people as if I’m showing off.” As those days pass by, their curiousity
toward each other’s true feeling is getting bigger, but so is the comfort they
feel toward each other. Too afraid to destroy the comfort, yet too frustated to
keep the distance. “Pretending that we’re
just friends, acting like we’re lovers, don’t do that. The more I think about
it, I get more curious about your real feelings, girl you’re so ambiguous. I
can’t do anything or maybe I’m expecting a miracle. I want a clear sign but I
forget all about it when I see your smile.”
The
man is too hesitant to ask, while the woman is too shy to confess, that’s the
main and biggest problem. “These days, it
feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine but you’re not. It feels like
I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours but I’m not. What kind of relationship are
we in? I’m confused, don’t be aloof. It feels like we’re lovers, it seems like
we’re lovers but we’re not. Whenever you see me, you act so vague to me. These
days, I hate to hear that I’m just like a friend for you.” As a result of
the problem, they’re confused. This confusion then leads them to begin feeling
frustated and annoyed. At this stage, they need to draw a clear line between
them, whether to be lovers for real or just end it all as friends for good. “I don’t like you, don’t like you these days,
but I only have you, I only have you. Clearly draw the line for me, don’t pull
out but confess your love to me.” But for these two people, the conclusion
is obvious, actually; that they love and need each other; that they don’t have
anybody else as special as each other, and they can’t be just friends afterall.
So, all they have to do is just firmly ask and bravely confess. Because when it
comes to love, an action only is not enough; it also needs to be spoken up.
Words; though it seems simple, it’s actually a difficult act if you say it with
sincerity; though it seems easy, it’s definitely a hard thing to do if those words
come from the bottom of your heart. “These
days, it feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine but you’re not. It
feels like I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours but I’m not. Don’t just laugh
like you don’t know and stop this now, be real with me. Put me in your heart
and don’t look elsewhere. Why don’t you stop acting like you don’t know when
you do know? Don’t give excuses that you’re tired, but hurry and tell me that
you love me.”

Baro and Dasom in "Some" music video |
A music video (MV) was released for “Some” on the same day as the digital single’s release date. Directed by Zany Bros, this MV starred a member of boy group B1A4, Baro, and Soyou’s group-mate fellow, Dasom, as lead male and female character respectively. The two portrayed a cute “sseom” couple who were planning to meet each other but through various push and pull tricks in the process. The MV’s storyline went well with the song’s sweet melody and cute lyrics. Both Baro and Dasom showed a great chemistry as well. Though Soyou and Jung Gigo didn’t appear in this MV, it’s truly entertaining. Especially, the big bear doll is making the point with its funny and exciting appearance. So cute and refreshing!
“Some”
was composed and arranged by Kim Do Hoon, Xepy, and Esna, with the lyrics were
penned by Min Yeon Jae, Xepy, Esna, Jung Gigo himself, and Lil Boi for the rap
part. This song was on number one position for six weeks on Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100, makes the
longest-running chart topper of 2014 up to this date. This song also won
several first place awards in various music show broadcasts; five times in KBS Music Bank, double crown in Mnet M! Countdown and MBC Music Core, and also a single win in
SBS Inkigayo and MBC Music Show Champion. Soyou and Jung Gigo performed this song
live in those music shows. This smooth R n’ B track seized public attention
with its sweet and ear-catchy melody, which combined with lyrics that captured
the daily reality of Korean youth these days. You can’t help but fall in love
since the first time you hear this song. Indeed, “Some” is really something!
“These
