“These days, it feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine but you’re not. It feels like I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours but I’m not. What kind of relationship are we in? I’m confused, don’t be aloof. It feels like we’re lovers, it seems like we’re lovers but we’re not. Whenever you see me, you act so vague to me. These days, I hate to hear that I’m just like a friend for you.” –Soyou & Jung Gigo feat. Lil Boi, Some [translated lyrics]

"Some" single cover by Soyou & Jung Gigo - source: en.wikipedia.org

Back in the beginning of the year, there was a sweet duet song released in South Korea. This song is called “Some”, a collaboration of Soyou –a member of girl group Sistar– and hip hop singer, Jung Gigo. This song also features rapper Lil Boi from the hip hop duo, Geeks. It was released as a digital single on February 7, 2014, and received an all-kill as it ranked 1st on all major music real-time charts, such as Melon, Soribada, Daum, Naver, Olleh, Mnet, and Genie. This song’s English title, “Some”, is only the anglicized version of its Korean title pronounciation, “썸” (“Sseom”). Meanwhile, the meaning of the song doesn’t have correlation with “some” as in English meaning, but it has to do with “sseom” as in Korean meaning instead.
In Korean, “썸” (“Sseom”) refers to two people who have a special relationship more than just friends, but less than lovers. In Indonesian terms, it sometimes refers to “gebetan”, or in a more frankly term, it’s some kind like “hubungan tanpa status” or “teman tapi mesra”. In English term, sometimes it’s simply called as “it’s complicated”. It’s a situation where both of the man and the woman are dating with each other, obviously having a feeling for each other, but none of them are eager to say the “L” word first, or ask the other person to be their lover first, which makes the status of their relationship is still unclear because of this condition. There are many causes behind this “sseom” status, but mostly is because the man is still waiting for the right opportunity to confess the love and ask the woman to be his girlfriend. Or, on the other hand, the man is still in doubt whether to confess or not because the woman’s attitude towards him is still so ambiguous, whether she really likes him too or just being nice.

Soyou & Jung Gigo celebrated their win during the encore in Mnet M! Countdown on February 27, 2014

“Some”, just like what its title meant to be in Korean term, is a song about two people who are “sseom”. In this song, these two people are feeling frustated and desperate with this unclear relationship status between them, while in some ways, they’re still holding hopes that it would work out for them somehow. “Sometimes, I get annoyed without even knowing, but my feelings for you haven’t changed. Maybe I’m the weird one, I thought as I struggled by myself. While tossing and turning alone in an empty room, the TV plays reruns of yesterday’s drama, as I hold my phone that doesn’t ring until I sleep.” Actually, what they want is just simple; to end this complicated situation and just be in a relationship for real. “I want to open my eyes to your text every morning, I want to fall asleep with your voice at the end of the day. On the weekends, I want to hug you in front of a lot of people as if I’m showing off.” As those days pass by, their curiousity toward each other’s true feeling is getting bigger, but so is the comfort they feel toward each other. Too afraid to destroy the comfort, yet too frustated to keep the distance. “Pretending that we’re just friends, acting like we’re lovers, don’t do that. The more I think about it, I get more curious about your real feelings, girl you’re so ambiguous. I can’t do anything or maybe I’m expecting a miracle. I want a clear sign but I forget all about it when I see your smile.”
The man is too hesitant to ask, while the woman is too shy to confess, that’s the main and biggest problem. These days, I hate to hear that I’m just like a friend for you.” As a result of the problem, they’re confused. This confusion then leads them to begin feeling frustated and annoyed. At this stage, they need to draw a clear line between them, whether to be lovers for real or just end it all as friends for good. “I don’t like you, don’t like you these days, but I only have you, I only have you. Clearly draw the line for me, don’t pull out but confess your love to me.” But for these two people, the conclusion is obvious, actually; that they love and need each other; that they don’t have anybody else as special as each other, and they can’t be just friends afterall. So, all they have to do is just firmly ask and bravely confess. Because when it comes to love, an action only is not enough; it also needs to be spoken up. Words; though it seems simple, it’s actually a difficult act if you say it with sincerity; though it seems easy, it’s definitely a hard thing to do if those words come from the bottom of your heart. “These days, it feels like you’re mine, it seems like you’re mine but you’re not. It feels like I’m yours, it seems like I’m yours but I’m not. Don’t just laugh like you don’t know and stop this now, be real with me. Put me in your heart and don’t look elsewhere. Why don’t you stop acting like you don’t know when you do know? Don’t give excuses that you’re tired, but hurry and tell me that you love me.”

Baro and Dasom in "Some" music video

A music video (MV) was released for “Some” on the same day as the digital single’s release date. Directed by Zany Bros, this MV starred a member of boy group B1A4, Baro, and Soyou’s group-mate fellow, Dasom, as lead male and female character respectively. The two portrayed a cute “sseom” couple who were planning to meet each other but through various push and pull tricks in the process. The MV’s storyline went well with the song’s sweet melody and cute lyrics. Both Baro and Dasom showed a great chemistry as well. Though Soyou and Jung Gigo didn’t appear in this MV, it’s truly entertaining. Especially, the big bear doll is making the point with its funny and exciting appearance. So cute and refreshing!
“Some” was composed and arranged by Kim Do Hoon, Xepy, and Esna, with the lyrics were penned by Min Yeon Jae, Xepy, Esna, Jung Gigo himself, and Lil Boi for the rap part. This song was on number one position for six weeks on Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100, makes the longest-running chart topper of 2014 up to this date. This song also won several first place awards in various music show broadcasts; five times in KBS Music Bank, double crown in Mnet M! Countdown and MBC Music Core, and also a single win in SBS Inkigayo and MBC Music Show Champion. Soyou and Jung Gigo performed this song live in those music shows. This smooth R n’ B track seized public attention with its sweet and ear-catchy melody, which combined with lyrics that captured the daily reality of Korean youth these days. You can’t help but fall in love since the first time you hear this song. Indeed, “Some” is really something!

Don’t give excuses that you’re tired, but hurry and tell me that you love me.” –Soyou & Jung Gigo feat. Lil Boi, Some [translated lyrics]

“I Really Love You” is a song about two people who deeply in love with each other. However, as deep as their love is, they can’t be together. No matter how hard they fight their feelings, they can’t help but keep falling deep. No matter how hard they try to keep their feelings inside, they can’t help but being so obvious. “I try to beat the destiny that has already been decided, even though I know it won’t work. But every time I meet you, I’m afraid that I’ll get caught for having those words that I repeat every day inside my heart. I love you. Those words fill up my mouth but I can’t say it, the words are too bitter to swallow. I really love you from the bottom of my heart.” They wonder if there would be a time for them to be together, even in another life. They wonder if there would be a time when they could confess all of their feelings, even it would take a lifetime. “If we ever happen to get another life in the next world, give me a chance then. Every time I meet you, I want to confess my feelings with words, I’ve been waiting for such a long time. I love you. Just looking at you makes me tearing up, words I can’t say with the excuse of a locked throat. I really love you from the bottom of my heart.” The word “love” is just too bitter to swallow, yet too hard to say. Because it comes from the bottom of their hearts, there’s no word that could describe it. “Although we can’t be together till the world ends, please remember. If we become the wind, we would always be together. I really love you to cry all of these tears. I really love you, even if I have to lose everything else. I really love you, you’re my everything.”

“I’m In Love” is a song about someone’s sincere yet desperate yearning of their feeling to their beloved one and only. As they only have eyes for that person only; as they only have thought for that person only; as that person is the only one they want to love and need to be with. As they can’t speak up their feelings; as they feel that they have so many lacks; as all of their tears and hearts are run out for that person. “There is one person who only looks at you; there is one person who only knows you. Even if I can’t say it all with words, even if I lack a lot, there is one person who only loves you. Here I am who is in love with you; here I am who also always wanting you. Even if my tears dry, even if all of my heart is wearing out, I am in love with you.” They love till it hurts so much. They love to die. There’s no word that enough to describe the feeling that they have. “I can’t express my love to you with words, even if you gather all of the world, it’s not enough. Till my tears dry, till my heart wears out, the love that I want and want is you.” And all that left are endless wonders and unanswered questions. “Why don’t you know? Can’t you see me? Can’t you hear my heart? When will you hug me? Until when will you not know my heart? How much do I have to cry, how much do I have to hurt until I can love you?”

“I’m Sorry” is a song about someone who feels somewhat desperation, sad, and anger because they can’t make the one they love stays beside them. That they have to let that person go. That they have to be separated from that person. That they have to turn their back away, because seeing that person hurt is too much to bear. “Take care, thank you, our those awkward goodbyes, I know that we’re breaking up. From the hurting you, I turn around, in case you know that I’m hesitating, in case you see me, in case you’re crying like me.” It hurts so much even though they already had a hunch before that this day would come; a day when they have to let that person go. It hurts so much but they somehow believe that they would meet that person again someday; that their fate haven’t ended yet. And when that day comes, they swear to themselves that they would never let that person go ever again. “For me, love is a dream that I can’t have, I know that this would happen in the end. However, perhaps, if by any chance, we were happen to meet again, then I would hold you and never let you go on that time.”
In the mixed feelings of desperation, sad, and anger, there’s still a linger feeling attached from the confession that was being left unsaid. And so they feel sorry because that untold love confession. And so they feel sorry as they keep wondering whether that person feels the same way as them. “Do you feel the same way as I do? This empty confession that won’t reach you, I’ll say it so that only I could hear; I will say that I love you.” And so they feel sorry because of their inability to do anything. “I’m sorry that this is me, that this is all I am who can’t do anything. All those days that we were together as us, I will just be hurt for that long.” And so they feel sorry because eventually they can’t let go of that person. And so they feel sorry because they can do nothing about it. And so they feel sorry because eventually they can’t just forget the time they spent together. And so they feel sorry because they’re still waiting for that person; waiting until they could confess to that person. “I’m sorry, that I can’t let you go, that this is all and no more that I can do. All the dreams we had for that long time, but I can’t just forget them like it’s all nothing, because I’m still waiting for you. The confession that I couldn’t tell you back then, I’ll do it better.”

It’s a heartwrenchingly beautiful song with a sweet yet melancholic melody. It suited well with the series’ storyline, and of course, one of top-of-mind soundtracks.

“With one hand, I would wipe your tears away. So the other hand that stained with pain won’t be noticed. Please try to ignore this weakening self. Can you see I’m running toward you?” –Kim Hyun Joong, If You’re Like Me (OST. The Wedding Scheme) [translated lyrics]

Aktor dan penyanyi berbakat, Kim Hyun Joong, menyumbangkan suara emasnya untuk mengisi jajaran soundtrack serial drama “The Wedding Scheme”, atau yang dikenal juga dengan judul “The Marriage Plot”. Leader dari grup SS501 ini membawakan lagu ballad bertajuk “If You’re Like Me”, yang dirilis sebagai single “The Wedding Scheme OST Part 1” pada tanggal 2 April 2012.
“If You’re Like Me” is a song about someone who’s wondering whether the one they love is feeling the same like them. Because the feel that the love is getting deeper. Because it’s so deep that it hurts so much. Because it hurts so much that they want to stay beside that person. “If you were feeling the same like me, you probably couldn’t walk a step, and just have tears flowing down within any minutes. If you were feeling the same like me, you would be looking at my eyes right now. I wish love would become deeper like this, so I could stay still by your side a little while more.” Because it’s getting harder to keep the feeling inside. Because they’re getting weaker when it comes to love. Because they can’t help but keep running toward that person. “With one hand, I would wipe your tears away. So the other hand that stained with pain won’t be noticed. Please try to ignore this weakening self. Can you see I’m running toward you?” Because all they want is to stay. Because all they need is that person. “My heart just wanted to stay beside you. Slowing down my pace to walk beside you. Please try to ignore this weakening self. I love you, you are my one and only person.” And all they wish for is that person were feeling the same like them. “If you were really feeling the same like me, if only these earnest wishes could touch you and make you feel, even if a different world came to you, even if a world without me came to you, you and I, we could feel the same.” Because after all, they know that what they feel for that person is real. “You would be thinking of me right now, if you were feeling the same.”

No need to say more, just listen to it, and you will understand; it’s lovely.
