Come Back Home
“Come
back home, can you come back home? Don’t leave me at the end of this cold earth
and come back to me. Come back home, can you come back home? Just put all the
pain in the past, I’m still waiting for you like this.” –2NE1, Come Back Home [translated lyrics]
One of South Korea’s representative girl groups, 2NE1, released their
second studio album titled “Crush” on February 27th 2014 digitally and on March
7th 2014 physically. Prior to its release, a promotional single titled “Come
Back Home” was released on February 26th 2014 along with a music video (MV).
This song topped nine of South Korea’s online music charts and was listed as an
all-kill single on Instiz.net. “Come Back Home” was released in two versions,
the original one and the unplugged version. The original version of this song
is an R n’ B hip hop song combined with reggae sound. Meanwhile, the unplugged
version is a pop acoustic.
“Come Back Home” is a song about someone who longs for their beloved one;
the one who already left. “You left me
but I can hear you breathing from somewhere. Once again, red tears are flowing,
I miss your smell that once held me. You said it was for my own good and you
turned away coldly just like a lie. Why did you’re gone away?” The longing
rips her, makes her bursting into tears. The longing traps her in the past,
makes her wondering whether he thinks about her too. The longing scares her,
makes her feeling unsure and unsecure about the future. “I hate you for not answering, do you sometimes miss me too? I’m trapped
in time without you, I can’t see what’s in front of me, I’m so scared. Those many days that are unfinished, it seems like
they’ll be waiting for us. Where are you? Where? Too
far away.” In a time where everything changes,
there’s one thing that stays the same, it’s her love for him. “The only thing left here is your shadow. My
longing for you tortures me more than my loneliness. Seems like I can catch the
sound of your laughter, but the moments weakly scatter like a sand castle.”
The feeling, the longing, it all leads to one hope; a hope that he will come
back for her, for good. It leads to a desperate begging for him, to put away
all the pain in the past, to not leave her alone in this cold life. “Come back home, can you come back home?
Don’t leave me at the end of this cold earth and come back to me. Come back
home, can you come back home? Just put all the pain in the past, I’m still
waiting for you like this. Now you gotta do what you gotta do.” In the end,
it’s all up to his choice whether he will come or not.
The lyrics of “Come Back Home” were written by Teddy, who’s also the
producer of the album. He composed and arranged the music of this song along
with Choi Pil Kang and Dee P. Tell me conservative, but I prefer the unplugged
version so much rather than the original one. Throw away all of those fusion
electronic sounds, and voila! You got one amazing pop acoustic song, with
perfect rap part for the bridge. I’ve already fallen in love with “Come Back
Home” since the first time I heard it. Then I fell in love more because of its
lyrics’ beautiful meaning. Overall, “Come Back Home” is a great comeback song
of 2NE1. Four thumbs up, ladies!
