Heartless Blues

There is no point in begging you now, you have already changed. I can’t ask you to stay by my side, so I must leave with a broken heart. Lights that remind me of our memories are flickering before my eyes tonight. If you were going to leave me with scars in the end, why did you come to me in the beginning?” –Kang Seung Mo, Heartless Blues [translated lyrics]

“Heartless Blues” is a song the deep resentment of a heartbroken man, a man’s desperate and grief-stricken emotions. This song’s lyrics depict the feeling of someone who has to leave their lover who doesn’t love them anymore without regrets. “There is no point in begging you now, you have already changed. I can’t ask you to stay by my side, so I must leave with a broken heart.” “Lights that remind me of our memories are flickering before my eyes tonight. If you were going to leave me with scars in the end, why did you come to me in the beginning?” “I would end up hating you if I keep looking at you, you whom I used to trust. Keeping back my tears with a broken heart, I turn around from you. Memories of our love are stopping me from leaving you. But I should leave without looking back when the memories are still beautiful.”

It’s Kang Seung Mo’s hit song that stirred the heart of many and became the nation’s most beloved song in the mid 1980s. “Heartless Blues” is the Korea’s representative 1980s’ song and it was sold more than one million copies. Of all version I’ve heard, I love Jung Dong Ha’s version the most. Not to mention that I adore him so much, I personally think that his husky voice is the most suitable for “Heartless Blues”. Moreover, the rock arrangement is through the roof. And yes, the song itself is such a legendary song. A great song met a great singer, so no wonder that Jung Dong Ha got a back-then-record-breaking score, 438, for his phenomenal performance of “Heartless Blues”.
