Dear You

You may say you hate me now, but I know how you feel. You knew I’d be in pain if you left after saying you love me. So you left crying in the rain without a word, it was so sad watching you leave.” –Boohwal, Heeya [translated lyrics]

This was the debut song that made Boohwal famous. This is the song he feels most connection to, because it’s not just Boohwal’s debut song, but also his debut song as a vocalist.

“Heeya” is a song about a man who calls out to his past lover. Yes, that woman’s name is Hee, or sometimes spelled as Hui. “Hey, Hui, take a look at me, you used to like me. You may say you hate me now, but I know how you feel.” Even though she had left him, somehow he had this kind of feeling that she still loves him. Even though she left without saying anything, some way he had this kind of intuition that she does that out of love. “You knew I’d be in pain if you left after saying you love me. So you left crying in the rain without a word, it was so sad watching you leave.” It’s not that they’re not in love anymore that they separated, but it’s the situation that made them do. “Your pale face is soaked in the rain and slowly fading away from me. It haunts me every single night in my dream, and I still long for you.” He couldn’t forget her. And so he called out and sang this song for her.

Apparently, “Heeya” is a very special and meaningful song for Lee Seung Chul. It’s like a vocal sanctuary for him. And after he watched Ailee performance, he said that it feels like his sanctuary has been invaded. That was such a high praise from the malicious ice man Lee Seung Chul! With special appearance of guitarist Shin Yoon Chul, son’s of the legendary guitarist Shin Jung Hyun, Ailee’s performance was striking the stage like a hurricane. Long before that, “Heeya” was performed on episode 3 of “Immortal Songs 2” when Boohwal came as the legend. I personally favor the Ailee version rather than the previous two. But yes, of course I also love Boohwal version, especially with Jung Dong Ha as the vocalist.
