“Sometimes these cuts are so much
deeper than they seem. You’d rather cover up, I’d rather let them bleed.”
–Maroon 5, Misery
Maroon 5 merilis single “Misery” sebagai single ketiga mereka dari studio album ketiga mereka, “Hands All
Over”. Single ini dirilis pada
tanggal 22 Juni 2010, tiga bulan sebelum albumnya kemudian menyusul dirilis
Talking about love and hate relationships, then leave it all for Maroon
5. This band knows so well how to
picture a love-hate relationship in a song. “Misery” is about someone who’s finding a difficult situation when a
relationship fades. It documents the
decay of a relationship.
“Not that I
didn’t care, it’s that I didn’t know. It’s not what I didn’t feel, it’s what I
didn’t show.”
“So scared of breaking it, that you won’t let it bend.” Mereka
Sesungguhnya ketika dua
orang sedang memiliki masalah, alih-alih menjauh satu sama lain, mereka
seharusnya duduk bersama untuk menyelesaikan masalah itu. Berjauhan hanya akan
menambah kekalutan dan rasa bingung bagi keduanya. “I’m desperate and confused, so far away from you.”
“Why do you do what you do to me? Why won’t you answer me, answer me?” Ia
“Misery” mendapatkan mayoritas
tanggapan positif dari para kritikus musik. Bill Lamb dari About.com mencatat, “All of
the usual elements of a Maroon 5 hit are here from the perky pop-soul sound to
lyrics of intense conflict in a relationship. However, this time the band takes
it all a few steps forward into the category of pop perfection.” Levine sendiri
“Misery is about the desperation of wanting
someone really badly in your life but having it be very difficult. Kind of what
all the songs I write are about. I’m not treading on new ground, but I think a
lot of people – including myself – deal with that all the time. Relationships
are difficult, and it’s good therapy to write about them.”
“Why won’t you answer me? The
silence is slowly killing me.” –Maroon 5, Misery

“So scared of breaking it, that you won’t let it bend
And I wrote two hundred letters I will never send
Sometimes these cuts are so much deeper than they seem
You’d rather cover up, I’d rather let them bleed
So let me be and I’ll set you free
I am in misery
There ain’t nobody who can comfort me
Why won’t you answer me?
The silence is slowly killing me
Girl, you really got me bad
You really got me bad
I’m gonna get you back
I’m gonna get you back
Your salty skin and how it mixes in with mine
The way it feels to be completely intertwined
Not that I didn’t care, it’s that I didn’t know
It’s not what I didn’t feel, it’s what I didn’t show
So let me be and I’ll set you free
You say your faith is shaken, and you may be mistaken
To keep me wide awake and waiting for the sun
I’m desperate and confused, so far away from you
I’m getting there, I don’t care where I have to run
Why do you do what you do to me?
Why won’t you answer me, answer me?
Why do you do what you do to me?
Why won’t you answer me, answer me?”
And I wrote two hundred letters I will never send
