Gives You Hell

When a relationship ends, I believe (based on my personal experience as well as some closest people of mine) that it brings disappointment to both sides; whether it is person who is being left or the one who is leaving. Since a romance relationship (moreover the ones that has been going for years) could end because one of the two or maybe both of people in the relationship find that it could not be maintained anymore. And the disappointment from heartbreak could bring sadness. And this disappointment and sadness could lead to anger. Hence, I personally think that it is natural for a person who is undergoing a broken heart to feel some sort of anger towards their significant other. The clinical psychologist, Leon F. Seltzer, argued that anger is almost never a primary emotion in that even when anger seems like an instantaneous, knee-jerk reaction to provocation, there’s always some other feeling that gave rise to it. And this particular feeling is precisely what the anger has contrived to camouflage or control. The anger is actually there as a form of self-defense to camouflage the disappointment and sadness. When we are heartbroken, anger is one of the phases we must going through. I personally think that it makes sense if we were hoping that the person who breaks our heart would go to hell for all the harm they have put on us; that every trace of us in their life and every memory would give them hell.

Now you’ll never see what you’ve done to me. You can take back your memories; they’re no good to me. And here’s all your lies, you can’t look me in the eyes with the sad, sad look that you wear so well.” –The All-American Rejects, Gives You Hell

This one catchy hateful breakup song is titled “Gives You Hell”, performed by American rock band, The All-American Rejects. It was released on September 30th 2008 as the lead single taken from the band’s third studio album, “When the World Comes Down”. Written by the band’s front-man, Tyson Ritter, and the member Nick Wheeler, this punk rock alternative track is the band’s most successful song to date. The music video for “Gives You Hell” was directed by Marc Webb and was released a month later on November 3rd 2008. A second version was later released in January 2009, primarily featuring an extended version of the performance scene from the first. Lyrically, this song celebrates heartbreak in a very hateful way as it follows the story of a man who pours out his anger and hate towards his ex-girlfriend who left him for some other guy. “Gives You Hell” is like giving the F finger towards that person whom we hate for breaking our heart. However though, there are so many layers behind anger; and this song depicts all of them pretty well. And yes, it is kind of satisfying to release the anger from a broken heart, indeed.

People say that the best revenge for our ex-partner is to show that we are doing just fine without them. The question is: is it really it? Is it really the best revenge? Well, if everything is a blessing in disguise, then the most important thing of a breakup is to discover our own selves. We must be disappointed and sad because of the heartbreak; and when the anger takes over, we might discover that we can do things we were not able to do when we were still in the relationship. Hence anger is not always a bad thing. We might be able to wake up in the evening without worrying what our partner may think about it or whether they may get upset about it. We are just free as hell. “I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face, and it never feels out of place. And you’re still probably working at a nine to five pace; I wonder how bad that tastes.” We must be disappointed and sad because of the heartbreak; moreover when our ex left us for someone else, someone whom they think is better than us. We are disappointed and sad because of the betrayal.
And when the anger takes over, we might discover that material possession is not always bring happiness. It might be just a form of jealousy and sarcasm, but in my humble opinion, falling for superficial things is falling from grace. And here I refer to the loss of status, respect, and prestige. Our ex has lost it all since they fall for those superficial things. “Now where’s your picket fence love? And where’s that shiny car? And did it ever get you far? You never seemed so tense love; I’ve never seen you fall so hard. Do you know where you are?” In our anger, we guarantee that our ex would someday be wondering why and how this relationship came to an end. And by that time they would realize that they actually were the one to blame, eventually; since we knew our ex all too well. “Tomorrow you’ll be thinking to yourself, where’d it all go wrong? But the list goes on and on.” Sarcastically, we would say that we miss them for the good times’ sake. However though, we do not really miss them after what they did. “And truth be told I miss you, and truth be told I’m lying.”

In our anger, we hope that the traces of our presence would bring hell upon that person. We hope that the memories of moment spent with us would give them hell. We hope that it would haunt them for the rest of their life. We hope that it would make them sick forever. “Now you’ll never see what you’ve done to me. You can take back your memories; they’re no good to me. And here’s all your lies, you can’t look me in the eyes with the sad, sad look that you wear so well.” And yes, behind every anger is actually a very deep sadness and a very great disappointment; for all the lies that have made pain inside our heart, for the heartbreaking separation, and for the feeling that has gone to vain. “When you see my face, hope it gives you hell. When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell. When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well, then he’s a fool, you're just as well, hope it gives you hell.” And yes, those who are heartless once cared too much. Those who are angry once loved too much. We might not be this angry if we were not deeply in love before.
Those who are angry once loved too much. Those who hate once loved too much and then got disappointed too deep; by the sadness, by the betrayal, and by the vanity. We actually feel very disappointed that they leave us for someone (they think is) better that we are so furious; thinking that anyone new is stupid for being with them. We actually feel very sad that they hurt us badly and leave us pathetically that we are so mad; thinking that anyone new is stupid for treating them well. “When you hear this song and you sing along but you never tell, then you’re the fool, I’m just as well, hope it gives you hell. When you hear this song, I hope that it will give you hell. You can sing along, I hope that it puts you through hell.” However, we also realize that we are stupid for having this angry feeling towards them. We were stupid for being deceived by all the lies. We were stupid for believing and trusting them with our heart. We are stupid for being in anger even right now. We are stupid for making a song that is full of anger and even dedicated for them.

Hell yeah, we would not make a song for someone unless that someone is meant a lot for us. We cannot deny the fact that the person was indeed someone so precious and we hold most dear. Nonetheless, we would not feel deceived, betrayed, hurt, and in vain. Nonetheless, we would not be so angry. Nonetheless, we would not hate them this much. Though they never admit it, we hope that the song would reach them and make them realize how miserable they are now after leaving us in despair and pain. We hope that the song would hit them and make them realize how fucked up they are now after leaving us in heartbreak and sorrow. There is this deep disappointment and sadness behind anger. And it would be a lie, a very big one, if we say that we wish them happiness right after the heartbreakingly painful separation. The truth be told, we wish them hell on Earth. We wish them to feel the despair and pain just like what we feel. We wish them to be in heartbreak and sorrow just as much as we are. And yes, it is just a phase. We will get pass through the anger, someday. But it is just not today though.

When you see my face, hope it gives you hell. When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell. When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well, then he’s a fool, you're just as well, hope it gives you hell.” –The All-American Rejects, Gives You Hell

I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face, and it never feels out of place
And you’re still probably working at a nine to five pace, I wonder how bad that tastes
When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell

Now where’s your picket fence love? And where’s that shiny car? And did it ever get you far?
You never seemed so tense love, I’ve never seen you fall so hard, do you know where you are?
And truth be told I miss you, and truth be told I’m lying

When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell

Tomorrow you’ll be thinking to yourself, where’d it all go wrong? But the list goes on and on
And truth be told I miss you, and truth be told I’m lying

When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you're just as well, hope it gives you hell

Now you’ll never see what you’ve done to me
You can take back your memories, they’re no good to me
And here’s all your lies, you can’t look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look that you wear so well

When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell

When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song and you sing along but you never tell
Then you’re the fool, I’m just as well, hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song, I hope that it will give you hell
You can sing along, I hope that it puts you through hell
