If I Ain't Got You

What do people is living for? What do they live for? Have you ever wondered about it? Have you ever thought about that? Have you ever asked to yourself? What do you live for? What do you is living for? Is it for achieving what you want and what you need? Or is it for achieving what you always dream of? Is for being happy? Or is it for creating happiness towards yourself and people around you? Is it for being satisfied materialistically? Or is it for being satisfied emotionally? What do you search for in living? What do you look for in life? What do you want to achieve in life? What do you want to be in life? There are so many questions lingering in my mind every single time I breathe. However, there is this person whom every time I look at him, it makes me forget all of those questions. And suddenly I feel like I do not have to get the answer, because it is all written on his face. No matter what I am living for, no matter what I do live for, it all does not matter without him. No matter what I search for in this life, no matter what I want to achieve or what I want to be, it all does not matter without him. There is this person like that.

Some people think that the physical things define what’s within. And I’ve been there before, but that life’s a bore, so full of the superficial.” –Alicia Keys, If I Ain’t Got You

Since today is a special day, hence I would like to write about a special song too, dedicated for my special person. It is a song titled “If I Ain’t Got You”, performed by American singer Alicia Keys. It was released in February 17th 2004 as the second single taken from the singer’s second studio album, “The Diary of Alicia Keys”. Written by Keys herself, the song was inspired by the 2001 death of fellow R n’ B singer Aaliyah, the terrorist September 11th attacks in New York City, and other different events in the world and in Keys’ life at that time, it is about “how material things don’t feed the soul.” Musically, the slow bluesy piano ballad features musicians Hugh McCracken on guitar and Steve Jordan on drums. The music video, directed by Diane Martel, features a cameo by rapper and actor Method Man as Keys’ on-screen boyfriend. I personally feel that I have personal connection to this song since I accidentally hear it played on the radio in the car when I am with my significant other, whose birthday is today. Therefore I want to dedicate this writings specially for him. And yes, this song is related to us.

It cannot be denied that we are currently living in this advance capitalism society that demands people to achieve something in order to be someone. Therefore people are living for the fortune or the fame. Moreover, hence people are living for the power, since people who have power are having control towards things. And when people have control, they have life, or at least, they feel like they have life. However, control is just an illusion. Without they realize, people are trapped in the system that actually has the power over anything. Unconsciously, people are trapped in superficial materialistic things. It will exhaust them until the point that they do not realize what they really need anymore, and cannot define what or who they really are. They are blinded by fortune, fame, power, game, and physical things which we all know do not last forever. “Some people live for the fortune. Some people live just for the fame. Some people live for the power. Some people live just to play the game. Some people think that the physical things define what’s within. And I’ve been there before, but that life’s a bore, so full of the superficial.”
It cannot be denied that we are currently living in this materialistic era where everyone is measured by things that they have and do and show. Therefore people are searching for labels to define their identity. Moreover, hence people need to materialize their feelings in order to show it, since when they are able to show it materialistically, it is a proof that their feelings are real and sincere, or at least, they feel like their feelings are real and sincere. However, those are just delusion. Without they realize, people are trapped in this social stigma that everything needs to be proven materialistically instead of emotionally. Unconsciously, people are trapped in narcissistic way of life in order to prove just to themselves instead of other people. It will exhaust them until the point that they do not know whom they do those things for. They are blinded by youth, roses, and silver platter which we all understand do not last forever. “Some people search for a fountain that promises forever young. Some people need three dozen roses, and that’s the only way to prove you love them. Hand me the world on a silver platter and what good would it be with no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me.”
Aren’t we got tired of this superficiality? Aren’t we got exhausted from this materialistic? Well, I’m tired. And I’m exhausted as fuck. And I realize that there is something more important beyond superficiality or materialistic or anything, and sometimes people define it as a thing called love. And this love is embodied in some people you hold most dear; your beloved ones. “Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all if it ain’t you, baby, if I ain’t got you, baby. Some people want diamond rings, some just want everything. But everything means nothing if I ain’t got you.” There are some people in this world that you hold most dear that not even any superficial things can replace them. There are some people in this life that you cherish the most that not even any materialistic things can substitute them. Fortune, fame, power, game, and physical things won’t matter without those people in your life. Youth, roses, and silver platter won’t mean a thing without those people around you. It is powerful and real and sincere, more than anything. “So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing, if I ain’t got you with me.”

Rather than only wondering what you live for, have you ever asked to yourself whom you live for? Rather than only wondering what you want in life, have you ever asked to yourself whom you share that thing with, once you achieve it? Rather than only wondering what you want to be in life, have you ever asked to yourself whom you want to be beside you, once you become it? Once you accomplish those superficial materialistic things, do they all still matter if you are alone eventually? Just imagine how lonely a life like that would be. Once you actualize those dreams, do they all still matter if you don’t have anyone to share it with? Just imagine how empty a life like that would be. There are some people in this world that you hold most dear that not even any superficial things can replace them. For me, that person is you, Vidi Mahatma Santoso. Thank you for coming into my life and willing to ride this roller-coaster called life with me. Moreover, thank you for willing to share all of these things called relationship that we have together. Happy birthday and many happy returns.

Some people want diamond rings. Some just want everything. But everything means nothing if I ain’t got you.” –Alicia Keys, If I Ain’t Got You

Some people live for the fortune, some people live just for the fame
Some people live for the power, yeah, some people live just to play the game
Some people think that the physical things define what’s within
And I’ve been there before, but that life’s a bore, so full of the superficial

Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you, baby, if I ain’t got you, baby
Some people want diamond rings, some just want everything
But everything means nothing if I ain’t got you, yeah

Some people search for a fountain that promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses, and that’s the only way to prove you love them
Hand me the world on a silver platter and what good would it be
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me

Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you, baby, if I ain’t got you, baby
Some people want diamond rings, some just want everything
But everything means nothing if I ain’t got you, you, you
Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you, baby, if I ain’t got you, baby
Some people want diamond rings, some just want everything
But everything means nothing if I ain’t got you, yeah

If I ain’t got you with me, baby
So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If I ain’t got you with me, baby
