City of Stars

Recently I’ve been thinking about what I really search for in this life. I’ve been wondering about the reason of my existence in this world. And there are times when I think the reason why I was born as myself. And I wonder how it would be if I were born as somebody else. Lately I’ve been thinking about what love really means. I’ve been wondering whether I have been really in love; feeling it or having it or experiencing it. And there are times when I think whether it is right that love is the answer. And I wonder whether love is what I have been searching for in this life. And here comes another question: what kind of love is it? Is it a platonic kind of love that a Mother has towards her children? Is it a passionate kind of love that a lover has towards their partner? Is it a supportive kind of love that a friend has towards their friends? Is it a professional kind of love that a colleague has towards their other colleagues or perhaps a whore has towards their consumers? Is it an admiration kind of love that the fans have towards their idol? Is it a devoted kind of love that a teacher has towards their students? Is it a warm kind of love that somebody has towards their significant other? Is it a utopian kind of love that everyone has dreamt of to find throughout their lifetime?

City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, there’s so much that I can’t see. Who knows? I felt it from the first embrace I shared with you, that now our dreams, they’ve finally come true.” –Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone, City of Stars

Life is a lonely thing without love. And this big city I live in is a lonely place without my beloved ones. This song I would like to talk about this time is titled “City of Stars”, performed by actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone from the 2016 drama musical film “La La Land”. The music of the song was composed by Justin Hurwitz, while the lyrics were provided by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. This beautiful duet was released in December 9th 2016 as a part of “La La Land: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” album. In the film, the song was performed by the main characters couple, Sebastian and Mia (portrayed by Gosling and Stone, respectively), before they were separated because Sebastian had to go for a tour with his band. The song won a Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards. The lovely lyrics speak about how lonely people are in this metropolitan city of stars without someone to love and be loved.

As a human being, we were born without knowing anything about the essence of our existence in this life. We were meant to find it along the journey of our life. We were meant to find it through things that we want to achieve in this life. Hence people are able to hang on in this cold and harsh life for we are living while holding on to dreams. We were meant to find the essence of our existence in this life through the process and efforts of pursuing those dreams. And who knows where we can find it from? And who knows in what form we will find it? It could be coming from a simple thing; as simple as a warm hug we share with someone we’ve just met. It could be coming from a big thing too; as big as being able to live in a city of stars that we’ve always dreamt of. It could be coming from a meeting with someone special; our significant other. “City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, there’s so much that I can’t see. Who knows? I felt it from the first embrace I shared with you, that now our dreams, they’ve finally come true.”
I guess that every human being in this world has their own reason why they are able to hold on living. I believe that they all have some dreams that keep them alive and continue living despite any kinds of situation. I understand that we were meant to find the essence of our existence in this life through the process and hardships of pursuing those dreams; one thing that everybody has and wants to achieve. And who knows where we can find it? It could be coming while we’re in the middle of crowded restaurant. And who knows in what form we will find it? It could be in a form of love from someone else, a rush in the fluttering heart, a short shining glance, a slight touch on the skin, or a dance we share on the floor. Indeed, in the end of the day, human is craving for a love from someone else and every of its possible forms. “City of stars, just one thing everybody wants. There in the bars, and through the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants. It’s love, yes, all we’re looking for is love from someone else; a rush, a glance, a touch, a dance.”
After all, indeed, human is longing for a love from someone else, and all of its possible forms. It could be in the eyes that can brighten up even our darkest day. It could be in the eyes that can open up our horizon and make us see beyond it. It could be in the voice that can wash away our loneliness. It could be in the voice that can make us feeling reassured that everything will be okay. “A look in somebody’s eyes to light up the skies, to open the world and send it reeling. A voice that says, I’ll be here, and you’ll be alright. I don’t care if I know just where I will go, ‘cause all that I need is this crazy feeling, a rat-tat-tat on my heart. Think I want it to stay.” It is this crazy little thing called love that makes us stay alive. It is this mad feeling called love that makes us keep on moving. It is this insane irrational concept called love that makes us continue living. And when we find it, suddenly everything seems so different though it is all the same. “City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, you never shined so brightly.”

I’ve been wondering whether it is love that I have been searching for in this life. What kind of love? It is a platonic one and also a passionate one. It is a supportive one and also a professional one. It is an admiration and also a devoted one. It is a warm kind and also a utopian one. It is all forms of love becoming one. I found it in the eyes of a man stared at me from the upstairs six years ago; a stare that has not changed until now. I found it in the touch of a hand from a man held mine once upon a night six years ago; a touch that has not changed until now. I found it in the deep voice of man; a voice that has not changed since six years ago. And since then, this city of stars has been shining brighter than ever. I found it in every single way possible from a man; my significant other. I find it in every single moment we spend together. I find it in every single conversation we have. I find it in every single time we share. I do not care whether I know where I will go from here, as long as I am with him, this feeling is alive and so am I. And that is all I need. And that is what I want to stay for.

It’s love, yes, all we’re looking for is love from someone else; a rush, a glance, a touch, a dance. A look in somebody’s eyes to light up the skies, to open the world and send it reeling. A voice that says, I’ll be here, and you’ll be alright.” –Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone, City of Stars

City of stars, are you shining just for me?
City of stars, there’s so much that I can’t see
Who knows? I felt it from the first embrace I shared with you
That now our dreams, they’ve finally come true

City of stars, just one thing everybody wants
There in the bars, and through the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants
It’s love, yes, all we’re looking for is love from someone else
A rush, a glance, a touch, a dance

A look in somebody’s eyes to light up the skies
To open the world and send it reeling
A voice that says, I’ll be here, and you’ll be alright
I don’t care if I know just where I will go
‘Cause all that I need is this crazy feeling, a rat-tat-tat on my heart
Think I want it to stay

City of stars, are you shining just for me?
City of stars, you never shined so brightly
