Sometimes people need some time alone on their own, yet nobody wants to be lonely all the time. Even the toughest man in the world needs love. He needs to feel real love. When I was in junior high school, this one man with his one song was very popular at the time; Robbie Williams with “Feel”. After departing from the group that raised his name into fame, Take That, Mr. Williams made a breakthrough with his solo career. At that time, I didn’t really understand what this song really means. But after time, I was starting to get that this song is actually pretty sad. Although, like we’ve all known, Williams is famous for his tough and masculine image. However, apparently even the toughest man has a gentle and melancholic side in him. Here I present today’s song for Male Special Part 2: Ways of Being A Man, “Feel”, performed by Robbie Williams.

I don’t wanna die, but I ain’t keen on living either. Before I fall in love, I’m preparing to leave her. Scare myself to death, that’s why I keep on running. Before I’ve arrived, I can see myself coming.” –Robbie Williams, Feel

“Feel” was released on December 2nd 2002, as the lead single taken from the British singer-songwriter Robbie Williams’ fifth solo studio album, “Escapology”. The pop rock ballad track was written by Williams himself along with Guy Chambers. Originally only recorded as a demo in 1999, Williams attempted to re-record the vocals in 2002. However, felt unsatisfied with the result, thus he decided to issue the original demo version instead for the 2002 release.

Listening to “Feel” is like listening to a man’s true confession from the bottom of his heart. It’s a reflective song about his hopes and fears toward love and life. When we take a closer look, apparently this kind of anxiety is not only happening to men, but also to women. In general, it can happen to people who are being too comfortable of being alone. You know, even for those great people who are doing just fine with being all by themselves, at some point, there are times when the loneliness is really kicking in, and it’s killing them inside. “Come and hold my hand, I wanna contact the living. Not sure I understand this role I’ve been given. I sit and talk to God, and He just laughs at my plans. My head speaks a language I don’t understand.” As they take a look back to their lives so far, they realize that there’s something missing. “I don’t wanna die, but I ain’t keen on living either. Before I fall in love, I’m preparing to leave her. Scare myself to death, that’s why I keep on running. Before I’ve arrived, I can see myself coming.”
People come and go in this life. Yet there’s a hope that someday, someone will come, stay, and never leave. People will get tired, eventually, of running away, of playing around. At some point, they long for home, for settling down. But most of the times, it’s a long way there. “I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in. ‘Cause I got too much life, running through my veins, going to waste. And I need to feel real love, and the love ever after. I can not get enough.” What is real love anyway? People are getting old searching for what they think they need for life. But in the end, what’s really matter when you end up being alone anyway? And suddenly life’s just wasted away like that. They say, stop running away and you’ll be found. Well, perhaps that’s true. We never know if we never try. “I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in. I got too much love, running through my veins, to go to waste. I just wanna feel real love and the love ever after. There’s a hole in my soul, you can see it in my face. It’s a real big of a place.”
A music video for “Feel” was featuring Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah, who appeared as Williams’ love interest, making the video to be able to gain attention in United States. “Feel” became Williams’ biggest international hit, selling over four million units worldwide and reaching the top ten in every European country. This song is a classic and the lyrics are everlasting. Even until now, I still love to sing this song whenever I go to the karaoke.

I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in. ‘Cause I got too much life, running through my veins, going to waste. And I need to feel real love, and the love ever after. I can not get enough.” –Robbie Williams, Feel

“Come and hold my hand, I wanna contact the living
Not sure I understand this role I’ve been given
I sit and talk to God, and He just laughs at my plans
My head speaks a language I don’t understand

I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in
‘Cause I got too much life, running through my veins, going to waste

I don’t wanna die, but I ain’t keen on living either
Before I fall in love, I’m preparing to leave her
Scare myself to death, that’s why I keep on running
Before I’ve arrived, I can see myself coming

I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in
‘Cause I got too much life, running through my veins, going to waste
And I need to feel real love and the love ever after, I can not get enough

I just wanna feel real love, feel the home that I live in
I got too much love, running through my veins, to go to waste
I just wanna feel real love and the love ever after
There’s a hole in my soul, you can see it in my face, it’s a real big of a place

Come and hold my hand, I wanna contact the living
Not sure I understand this role I’ve been given
Not sure I understand, not sure I understand
Not sure I understand, not sure I understand”
