Korean boy band called B.A.P (an acronym for Best Absolute Perfect), stormed in like a hurricane to the music industry in 2012. Soon after debuting, they rocketed as one of prominent rookies of that year, along with two another groups, EXO and Busker Busker. With their powerful performance and strong musicality as trademarks, B.A.P proved that they’re more than just a boy band, but also a group of musicians, by writing and arranging some of their own hit songs. However, the newly born promising group was having their first lightning struck in the late 2014. They faced a conflict with their own agency/label, TS Entertainment. In result, their activity had been suspended, leaving the fans in confusion and anxiety. Last month, August 2015, a good news came out. TS Entertainment and B.A.P finally reached a settlement, with the group returning to the company and gearing for a comeback. Therefore, for the next five post of Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers, I’ll make reviews for B.A.P’s selected hits released before their recent hiatus.

This endless war, who is it actually for? Bang bang! Everyone cowardly aims behind your head. Will you hypocrites ever be forgiven? Bomb bomb! Throw away all the dark masks. Get it on.” –B.A.P, Warrior (워리어)

Today’s song for Band of Brothers is B.A.P’s debut single titled “Warrior (워리어)”. It was released on January 26th 2012 for digital download. This uptempo hip-hop-with-pop-rock-sound track later became the title song for the group’s first single album which was released on February 2nd 2012. The group’s leader, Bang Yong Guk, wrote the song along with composers Kang Ji Won and Kim Ki Bum.

Lyrically, “Warrior (워리어)” takes a non-mainstream approach from other pretty-boy male idol groups that are dominating the K-Pop world. It criticizes the injustice of the current social system, especially in South Korea, and describes how people should care more about it and have desire to end it. “I’ll confront and fight for the souls in this street. The starting point of a new revolution, stop me if you can. An evil DNA, virus, we have lost all of our warriors for it.” It is known that South Korea is one of countries with high suicide rate, particularly among student age group. Whether it’s the social pressure from society system or the psychological pressure from bullying, they’re victims. “Yeah, a punch that I throw for you, who are thirsty from the long fight. Everyone’s different, everyone takes sides, and those words are just words of ignorant people. Since the word that echoes in my heart is different from yours, I’m in anger, so listen to my four measure nagging. Rest in peace, this prayer is for truths, even if in the hidden system the black shadow covers it up. This holy badge that won’t yield.”
This song credits those who live in the darkness of suicide, violence at school and others by comparing them to warriors. When there are so many youngsters want to end their life quickly, it should make us wondering; what is wrong with the society? Or, does the wrong really lie within the society? Or perhaps, is it the loss of humanity that we actually have to deal with? Who is supposed to be responsible with all the chaos? “This endless war, who is it actually for? Bang bang! Everyone cowardly aims behind your head. Will you hypocrites ever be forgiven? Bomb bomb! Throw away all the dark masks. Get it on.” Children will fight, teenagers will rebel, but parents and elders have the responsibility to minimize the damage they can cause; and that’s at the very least. When a child is lost, it’s not a punishment that can save them. Embrace them; consolation is all they need. “Have you lived in the swamp of despair? Bang bang! Nightmares keep haunting, making me feel like a lost compass. With those devil lips, will you say it easily? Bomb bomb! One by one, they die. Everyone stops breathing by the hell-like words.”
To tell you a thing or two about bullying, the scar is never leaving from your heart. It’s down there, deep, buried in the darkness. And somehow it’s waiting to surface again, anytime, everytime we see a similar thing happening to someone else. We might forgive, but we never forget. Well, at least that’s based on my experience. I was bullied, maybe once or more, during the elementary school. I never forget those faces, those words, those days. Since then I promised to myself, never let anyone else do that, ever again. “Warrior! Lose yourself under the sun, start a fire in my heart. Warrior! A little faster than a bullet, piercing into your heart. It’s suffocating you. Get down. Bow.” In result, I’ve never been bullied, ever again. And to be honest, during junior high and high school I bullied some people, only because they bullied my friends (well, I hope that doesn’t count, just taking revenge for my friends). Anyway, bullying is a sick thing, and those who do that are the actual losers. Stop it while you can. Other people may not see, but God knows, and karma does exist. “Underneath the sky, you cannot be hidden. Even if you hide, you will kneel before the truth.”

B.A.P in the "Warrior" music video

A music video for “Warrior (워리어)” was directed by Hong Won Ki, with dance routine choreography created by Park Sang Hyun. For its powerful and fierce imagery on its music video and live performances, the song gained mostly positive reviews from Korean music critics. Moreover, the way this song lyrically speaks received critical acclaim. Like this, a warrior has been born.

Have you lived in the swamp of despair? Bang bang! Nightmares keep haunting, making me feel like a lost compass. With those devil lips, will you say it easily? Bomb bomb! One by one, they die. Everyone stops breathing by the hell-like words.” –B.A.P, Warrior (워리어)
