Welcome to September! There’s so much to celebrate this month (I become a student again after two years, have classes to attend again, and of course, get a student card, yay!) and there’s nothing better to celebrate than do the ‘fangirl’-ing things. So, pardon me, if in the next two months (September and October) you find all my posts are related to: MALE! Yup yup yup, this blog will be full of testosterone, baby, so you better beware! Whether it’s a review of song sung by boy(s), or it’s a review of movie full of men, or even a list of the sexiest man alive, I don’t care, as long as they have pen*s they will be in it! Thus, for this September, the theme is Male Special Part 1: Band of Brothers, which is gonna be focusing in a group of males, whether it’s a band, boy band, vocal group, gang, club, brotherhood, or any form of boys/men gather together. Because when they do, God, it would feel like larger than life.

I may run and hide when you’re screaming my name, alright. But let me tell you now, there are prices to fame, alright. All of our time spent in flashes of light.” –Backstreet Boys, Larger Than Life

As the first song for Band of Brothers, I present to you “Larger Than Life”, performed by legendary boy band with the highest album selling of all time, Backstreet Boys, or also well known as BSB. The dance pop rock track was released on September 3rd 1999, served as the second single taken from their third studio album, “Millennium”. It was written by BSB’s member Brian Littrell, along with Max Martin and Kristian Lundin, dedicated specially for their devoted fans all over the world.

Lyrically, “Larger Than Life” is BSB’s ‘thank you’ song for their fans’ encouragement and devotion. Well, apparently not all of us are superstars and having so many devoted fans like BSB. However, everyone has some people so precious in life, some people around us whom we hold most dear. So, generally speaking, this song is expressing gratitude towards those people we cherish the most. “I may run and hide when you’re screaming my name, alright. But let me tell you now, there are prices to fame, alright. All of our time spent in flashes of light.” Superstars are just human. There’s time when they have an off day. And we’re all human too, having multiple really off days. But there’s always something in those people that can make our days, sometimes just by looking at them standing there for us. “Looking at the crowd and I see your body sway, c’mon. Wishing I could thank you in a different way, c'mon. ‘Cause all of your time spent keeps us alive.”
BSB sing about how having legions of fans has changed their lives. As for anyone of us, meeting some people and having them in our lives can bring some significant impacts toward it. And at some point, that makes them larger than life itself. They could be our parents, our siblings, our dear friends, lovers, even perhaps some strangers we’ve just met one night on a train. They could be anyone. Every meeting is a fate that could alternate our reality. And also, singers we idolize. Sometimes and somehow, their music and songs are the only things that can motivate us when nobody else’s words can’t, in some way. They inspire us, and it always feel like they’re always there whenever we need, through their pieces of art. And for everything, that makes them larger than life itself. “All you people, can’t you see how your love’s affecting our reality? Every time we’re down, you can make it right, and that makes you larger than life.”

"Larger Than Life" music video

The music video for “Larger Than Life” was directed by Joseph Kahn, broke the record for longest running number one on MTV’s “Total Request Live”. It also holds a Guinness World Record for the 14th most expensive music video with estimated production costs of over USD 2,1 million. “Larger Than Life” achieved both commercial and critical success, making it one of BSB’s signature songs. Furthermore, it’s number five on my list of 8 Backstreet Boys’ Everlasting Songs.

“I may run and hide when you’re screaming my name, alright
But let me tell you now, there are prices to fame, alright
All of our time spent in flashes of light

All you people, can’t you see, can’t you see how your love’s affecting our reality?
Every time we’re down, you can make it right, and that makes you larger than life

Looking at the crowd and I see your body sway, c’mon
Wishing I could thank you in a different way, c'mon
‘Cause all of your time spent keeps us alive

All of your time spent keeps us alive

Yeah, every time we’re down, yeah, you can make it right
Yeah, and that’s what makes you larger than life”
