It’s neither a bullshit when people say that love makes us blind, nor just a bad-mouthing caused by a broken heart. At some point, love does make people blind. And here I’m talking blind in a really very bad term. It blinds not only our eyes, but also all of our senses. In front of love, even a real bad thing looks good. We can no longer differ between the real dipshit and the real nice person. A jerk seems like a prince charming, and an asshole looks like a white knight in the shining armor. Before love, even poops taste like honey (yikes! That’s such a horrible metaphor, pardon me). Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, not all relationships are worth fighting for. Some relationships just strangle us, turn us into someone that we’re not, lead us to somewhere we don’t want to be, make us doing some way we don’t like to do, subconsciously. And for a relationship like that, it’s best to walk out of it. Who knows that since it has been gone, we’re growing strong.

Since you’ve been gone, I can breathe for the first time. I’m so moving on. Thanks to you, now I get what I want.” –Kelly Clarkson, Since U Been Gone

Today’s song for Growing Strong is for all of you who have been able to overcome and get out from a troublesome relationship, and move on. It’s a song titled “Since U Been Gone”, performed by the winner of the first season American Idol (and the only American Idol’s successful winner, in my note) Kelly Clarkson. The pop rock song was released on November 16th 2004 as the lead single from Clarkson’s second studio album, “Breakaway”. The track was written and produced by Max Martin and Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, with Clarkson added heavier guitars and harder drums to the song to make it sounded more like herself. A music video for the song was directed by Alex De Rakoff and premiered on MTV’s “Total Request Live”.

People met many wrong ones before finally meeting the right one. People had many relationshits before finally having the realationship. The lyrics of “Since U Been Gone” speak up the feeling from a woman’s point of view, expressing the sense of relief as the troubled relationship with Mr. Wrong has ended now. And the more important thing is, though everything was starting so well and very nice at the beginning, thank God it ends. Because in this case, it’s better sooner than later. “Here’s the thing, we started out friends. It was cool but it was all pretend, since you’ve been gone. You dedicated, you took the time. Wasn’t long till I called you mine, since you’ve been gone. How can I put it? You put me on. I even fell for that stupid love song, since you’ve been gone.” Every relationship always goes well at first, since the fling and twinkle and things related to our hormones. Yet, eventually, time reveals everything, and in terms of relationship, it’s whether the affection turns out to be love or just merely a temporary crush.
“And all you’d ever hear me say is, how I pictured me with you. That’s all you’d ever hear me say. How come I’d never hear you say, I just wanna be with you. I guess you never felt that way.” And the sooner we realize that, the better it gets. As time passes by, the relationship will reveal its real intentions. So don’t be surprised when it turns sour and bitter, even after all the sweetness and delicacy it gave in the first place. Through that, we should learn to respect ourselves; growing strong. A true relationship doesn’t work one way. It works both ways, and if we find it’s the other around, don’t hesitate to walk out of it. “You had your chance you blew it, out of sight, out of mind. Shut your mouth, I just can’t take it, again and again.” And believe, everything will work out great if we let go such a horrible thing. Some things are just not worth to hold onto. “Since you’ve been gone, I can breathe for the first time. I’m so moving on. Thanks to you, now I get what I want. You should know, that I get what I want, since you’ve been gone.”

“Since U Been Gone” gained critical acclaim from music critics, being considered as the highlight of “Breakaway” album, one of the best pop songs in the last decade, and many other positive reviews. This song was also a commercial success, topping the US Pop 100 chart for six consecutive weeks and the US Pop Songs chart for seven consecutive weeks respectively, and being certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of over one million copies sold. Moreover, it won the Best Female Video and Best Pop Video in the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards (where Clarkson also performed it live), and also the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 48th Grammy Awards.
Up until nowadays, “Since U Been Gone” was covered by many artists. In 2012, the song was used during the audition sequences in the musical comedy film, “Pitch Perfect”. Both the scene and the incorporation of the song’s rendition in the film gained praising from many critics. Lanford Beard of Entertainment Weekly stated, “It arranged the singers in a clever a cappella tapestry that simultaneously landed laughs and showed off their talents.” Ester Dean and Skylar Astin, who starred in the movie as Cynthia Rose and Jesse respectively, performed the song for “Pitch Perfect: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” album. I’m personally very fond of the audition sequences; it’s so funny yet brilliant, so hilarious yet beautiful, with the vocals, the scenarios, the arrangement, the editing, everything falls right into place.

“Here’s the thing we started out friends, it was cool but it was all pretend
Yeah yeah, since you’ve been gone
You dedicated you took the time, wasn’t long till I called you mine
Yeah yeah, since you’ve been gone
And all you’d ever hear me say, is how I pictured me with you
That’s all you’d ever hear me say

But since you’ve been gone, I can breathe for the first time, I’m so moving on, yeah, yeah
Thanks to you, now I get what I want, since you’ve been gone

How can I put it? You put me on, I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah, yeah, since you’ve been gone
How come I’d never hear you say, I just wanna be with you
I guess you never felt that way

You had your chance you blew it, out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth, I just can’t take it, again and again and again and again

I can breathe for the first time, I’m so moving on, yeah, yeah
Thanks to you, now I get, you should know, that I get, I get what I want
Since you’ve been gone”
