School, college, work; life always has its stages that every human being must face in theirs. Every stage has its beauty, which at some point makes people trapped in illusion of eternity; that it would last forever in that way. But life is a cycle. It’s inevitable that we live by stepping on those stages from one to another. Every beginning has an ending, and an ending is just the start of another beginning; the cycle of life. In every transition, we feel some kind of fear and anxiety; a feeling about leaving something behind and wondering what’s there waiting for us in the something new. It’s okay to feel it; fear, anxiety; it makes us human. In every transition, we have this kind of motivation; something to hold onto beyond the fear and anxiety, something that helps and urges us to grow strong. It can be a dream, a hope, a spirit, an idea of a growing strong future. It can be some people, the precious ones, beloved ones; they who give inspirations for growing strong, who light the dark like a flashlight.

When tomorrow comes, I’ll be on my own, feeling frightened of the things that I don’t know. And though the road is long, I look up to the sky, and in the dark I found, lost hope that I won’t fly, and I sing along.” –Jessie J, Flashlight [OST. Pitch Perfect 2]

A song titled “Flashlight” is today’s song for Growing Strong. It was specially written by Sia Furler, Christian Guzman, Jason Moore, and Sam Smith, for the soundtrack to musical comedy film “Pitch Perfect 2”. The pop track was recorded by British singer Jessie J and was released as a single on April 23rd 2015, prior to the worldwide release date of the film. On the same day, a music video directed by Hannah Lux Davis was released on YouTube. The video contains some scenes from the movie, with Jessie J is pictured singing it in Barden University.

We’ll never know what tomorrow brings, where the next step in life takes us, and how the future is gonna be. It seems so foggy and dark in front of us, but there are some people, significant ones, who are always there, cheering us up, and encouraging us, making everything clearer and brighter. Lyrically, “Flashlight” is a song dedicated to those people. The art of leaving the place we used to stand on is never easy, but that’s what it takes in order to move forward. Everybody will leave, eventually. “When tomorrow comes, I’ll be on my own, feeling frightened of the things that I don’t know. And though the road is long, I look up to the sky, and in the dark I found, lost hope that I won’t fly, and I sing along.” It’s natural to be afraid or anxious; wondering whether tomorrow will be better than yesterday or today, whether the next place will be more than the place before. Well, if we put a little faith towards the fear and anxiety, we can turn it into an excitement; which is good and helping us to grow strong. “I see the shadows long beneath the mountain top. I’m not afraid when the rain won’t stop, ‘cause you light the way.”
Moving forward doesn’t mean we leave all things behind. We take and bring some of them with us for the rest of our lives. Moments spent, feelings shared, and memories made together, they are flashlights that will make our journey brighter than ever. They are reminders for us, that life is beautiful, and we should be grateful in all of our ups and downs, darkness and bright. “I got all I need when I got you and I. I look around me, and see a sweet life. I’m stuck in the dark, but you’re my flashlight. You’re getting me through the night.” Those things, those people, whenever we look at them we can feel how wonderful life is. It gives us such a heartwarming feeling inside to get through our hardest time. Whenever we’re feeling so down and frustrated, instead of grieving and thinking why life is so unfair, we take a look again and make it a trigger for growing strong. “Kick start my heart when you shine it in my eyes. Can’t lie, it’s a sweet life. Stuck in the dark, but you’re my flashlight, you’re getting me through the night.” As much as how grateful we are, let’s be somebody’s flashlight too. “‘Cause you’re my flashlight.”

In the movie storyline, “Flashlight” is written by Barden University freshman Emily (portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld) to compensate for her anxiety about leaving home and entering college. Later the song is incorporated by the Barden Bellas into their World Championship setlist performance, making them the first a cappella group to sing an original song instead of cover song in a championship performance. It was a very heartwarming performance, thanks to the sweet song, which suited so well with the storyline.

“When tomorrow comes, I’ll be on my own, feeling frightened of the things that I don’t know
When tomorrow comes, tomorrow comes, tomorrow comes
And though the road is long, I look up to the sky, and in the dark I found, lost hope that I won’t fly
And I sing along, I sing along, and I sing along

I got all I need when I got you and I, I look around me, and see a sweet life
I’m stuck in the dark but you’re my flashlight, you’re getting me, getting me, through the night
Kick start my heart when you shine it in my eyes, can’t lie, it’s a sweet life
Stuck in the dark but you’re my flashlight, you’re getting me, getting me, through the night
‘Cause you’re my flashlight, you’re my flashlight, you’re my flashlight

I see the shadows long beneath the mountain top, I’m not afraid when the rain won’t stop
‘Cause you light the way, you light the way, you light the way

Light, light, you’re my flashlight

‘Cause you’re my flashlight, you’re my flashlight”
