Everybody has that one, or maybe two, perhaps more, precious memories of a certain person; a memory they cherish so much that they remember it all so well even after a long time has passed. In some random and seem-like-ordinary days, suddenly, the memory just comes out like that, popping inside our minds out of nowhere but we remember it all too well even after all those times. Has it ever happened to you? Apparently it happens to me these days. Getting too sentimental. Maybe because I was there, and he was there, so we remember it all too well. Meeting him again reviving all of those moments in the memories. Reminiscing them again making me long for him even more than before. I miss you, G, and I wish you were here, because I remember it all too well.

Maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much. But maybe this thing was a masterpiece, ‘til you tore it all up. Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well.” –Taylor Swift, All Too Well

Perhaps from the prologue above you could guess that today’s song for Moments Of Our Lives would be a song titled “All Too Well”. Yup, this pop country song was performed by the one and only Miss Taylor Swift. It was released on October 22nd 2012 as a part of the American singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album, “Red”. Despite never being released as a single, “All Too Well” received critical acclaim from music critics. It was also performed by Swift at the 2014 56th Annual Grammy Awards, which the performance also gained positive reviews. The country rock ballad track was written by Miss Swift herself along with Liz Rose.

There are moments in our lives that are just too precious to forget; moments that we remember it all too well. And that’s what the lyrics of “All Too Well” tell about; memories that even after they’re long gone, they stay in our minds, like forever. “Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place, and I can picture it after all these days. And I know it’s long gone, and that magic’s not here no more. And I might be okay, but I’m not fine at all. ‘Cause there we are again on that little town street. You almost ran the red ‘cause you were looking over at me. Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well.” Moments so precious can’t just be forgotten easily. Whether they’re good or bad, since they’re as precious as the person whom we shared the moments with, they can’t just fade away easily. That’s natural. “You taught me ‘bout your past, thinking your future was me. And I know it’s long gone, and there was nothing else I could do. And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to. ‘Cause there we are again in the middle of the night. We’re dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light. Down the stairs, I was there, I remember it all too well.”
And we still remember every detail of them, every single mistake and pain, too well. Perhaps because it was real, because we were there. From the fluttering first meeting until the painful goodbye, we remember it all too well. “Well, maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much. But maybe this thing was a masterpiece, ‘til you tore it all up. Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well. Hey, you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest. I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here, ‘cause I remember it all too well.” And we can’t help it. Moreover when we know that apparently the person remembers it all too well too. Perhaps because it was real, because they were there. “Time won’t fly, it’s like I’m paralyzed by it. I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it. After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own, now you mail back my things and I walk home alone. But you keep my old scarf from that very first week, ‘cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me. You can’t get rid of it ‘cause you remember it all too well.”
It feels so funny how we lost one special thing just when we realize that it’s the one thing we ever wanted to find. How the moment passed just like that. How we let it slipped through our hands just when we started to get a grip on it. How we let it faded away just when we began to have a hold of it. How, even after a long time has passed and it has long gone, the memories still come their way into our minds. Indeed, life is a tragic comedy. And it feels so funny that no matter how long time has passed, that one person and the memories of moments we shared with them still have the power to make us remember. “‘Cause there we are again, when I loved you so, back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known. It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well. Wind in my hair, you were there, you remember it all, down the stairs, you were there, you remember it all, it was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well.” Vividly, because it was so real, and we were there, and it was like watching an old movie playing over and all over again. Moments are like wine; it’s getting rare when it’s getting old, and it’s getting more precious.

“All Too Well” was the first song Swift wrote for the “Red” album. According to a source, she said that the song was the hardest to write on the album, stating that it was emotionally difficult because it took her a really long time to filter through everything she wanted to put in the song without it being a ten minute song, which she can’t put on an album. She wanted a story that could work in the form of a song, and she did it. The lyrics of “All Too Well” are told in a story-telling way, which is the signature and beauty of Swift’s writings. Indeed, writing something deep and personal is never easy. It’s a journey of the soul and mind through the moments in memories.

‘Cause there we are again, when I loved you so, back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known. It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well. –Taylor Swift, All Too Well

“I walked through the door with you, the air was cold but something ‘bout it felt like home somehow
And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house, and you’ve still got it in your drawer even now
Oh, your sweet disposition and my wide-eyed gaze, we’re singing in the car, getting lost Upstate
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place, and I can picture it after all these days
And I know it’s long gone, and that magic’s not here no more
And I might be okay, but I’m not fine at all

‘Cause there we are again on that little town street
You almost ran the red ‘cause you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well

Photo album on the counter, your cheeks were turning red, you used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin sized bed
And your mother’s telling stories about you on a tee ball team, you taught me ‘bout your past, thinking your future was me
And I know it’s long gone, and there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to

‘Cause there we are again in the middle of the night
We’re dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there, I remember it all too well, yeah

Well, maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece ‘til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well
Hey, you call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here ‘cause I remember it all, all, all too well

Time won’t fly, it’s like I’m paralyzed by it, I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own, now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week, ‘cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me
You can’t get rid of it ‘cause you remember it all too well, yeah

‘Cause there we are again, when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair, you were there, you remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there, you remember it all
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well”
