Love is a lonesome thing; they say. Whether it’s one-sided or not, when we love, we love alone. Only ourselves know how deep we love. Only ourselves know how much we would give in. Only ourselves know how we feel. Whether it’s unrequited or not, love is a monologue with ourselves; a negotiation with ourselves. And only ourselves understand how much it will hurt us when it become unrequited, or when it has to be over. Only ourselves understand how deep it will linger and haunt us down. Only ourselves understand how long it will take for us to be healed and be fine. We lose ourselves in the things we love, yet we find ourselves there too. If there’s one particular moment that human being will remember for all time in their lives, it’s the moment when they learn about love and its loneliness for the first time.

Will I be able to meet someone else and fall in love again? Because I don’t think that I can. There’s one thing I don’t understand, still, to be in love with someone, why it seems like such a lonely thing.” –Yang Hee Eun, About Love and Its Loneliness (사랑 쓸쓸함에 대하여)

Today’s song for Moments Of Our Lives is another Korean classic, titled “About Love and Its Loneliness (사랑 쓸쓸함에 대하여)”. It was performed by Korean legendary female singer and musician, Yang Hee Eun, and first released in 1991. Yang’s signature voice and a single guitar playing in this song were impressive. She wrote the lyrics as the guitarist Lee Byung Woo wrote a melody for it. Many singers, including Portuguese singer Bevinda, had remade this song. “About Love and Its Loneliness (사랑 쓸쓸함에 대하여)” has remained popular for more than 20 years since its first release, and well-known as one of Yang’s biggest hits. The English translation for the song’s title is also known as “About the Loneliness of Love”.

If there’s one particular moment that human being will remember for all time in their lives, it’s the moment when they learn about love and its loneliness for the first time. It’s what the lyrics of “About Love and Its Loneliness (사랑 쓸쓸함에 대하여)” tell us. “Will I be able to meet someone else and fall in love again? Because I don’t think that I can. There’s one thing I don’t understand, still, to be in love with someone, why it seems like such a lonely thing.” At some point in our lives, we meet someone, fall in love, and eventually go for separate ways. However, among many people we meet in this life, there are certain people that we know, even when they have left us, we will never be the same person again as we were before them. There are certain people that we know, when they left, they brought along our old selves with them. And when the love is already over, we realize that we will never love the same way again.
“At least once in our lifetime, we meet someone unforgettable, and bid an unforgettable farewell. There’s one thing I don’t understand, still, to love someone, why it seems like such a lonely thing.” Perhaps the love is just too deep. Perhaps it’s the first time we learn what love is and how to love and to be loved. Perhaps we just understand, that time can’t be reverse and we will never meet someone like them ever again. And that’s when we realize, that loving someone is indeed a lonesome thing. That’s when we know that when a love dies, a part of us is also dead with it. So long and goodbye for the old self. “When the love ends, the world also comes to an end. Everything that used to shine for me, they lose their lights too.” At least once in someone’s life, there’s a certain somebody that will leave traces, printed forever in the heart, mind, and memory. Somebody that will make someone learn about love and its loneliness, once and for a lifetime.
