What makes a survivor? Are they forged from iron? Made of steel? Built by science? Risen from the dark? Handed to them from the heaven? Or is it magic? Well, perhaps, in movies, or fairytales, or fictions. But this is life, a real one that we’re living in. We’re not Iron Man who’s forged from iron. We’re not Superman, the man of steel. We’re not Hulk or Captain America who’s built by science. We’re not Batman, the dark knight. We’re not Thor who has it handed to him from the heaven. We’re not Cinderella who has it handed to her by magic. We’re mankind. What makes a survivor? In this case, I will say, it’s the life itself. Indeed, living life is the art of surviving. It’s the fifth day of May and a wonder comes to mind; what makes us a survivor? Is it enough by keep on breathing day by day? Perhaps enough is never enough. I believe in one thing that makes us a survivor, though. I guess it’s in the way we treat ourselves in this life.

I’m a survivor. I’m not gonna give up. I’m not gonna stop. I’m gonna work harder. I’m a survivor. I’m gonna make it. I will survive. Keep on surviving.” –Destiny’s Child, Survivor

Today’s song for Free Spirit is a song performed by the legendary Destiny’s Child, titled “Survivor”. The hip hop R n’ B song was released on February 13th 2001 and served as the second single and title song release from the group’s third studio album of the same name. The album marked Destiny’s Child in their new trio formation with Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, following the departure of the group’s two former members.

What makes us a survivor? Is it by proving for those who underestimate us that we could make it? Well, apparently, it is. “Survivor” tells about what makes us a survivor. For some people, they are getting stronger not because they want to be, but because they need to be, they have to be, and they must be. For some people, they become a survivor because they must. “Now that you’re out of my life, I’m so much better. You thought that I’d be weak without you, but I’m stronger. You thought that I’d be broke without you, but I’m richer. You thought that I’d be sad without you, I laugh harder. You thought I wouldn’t grow without you, now I’m wiser. Thought that I’d be helpless without you, but I’m smarter. You thought that I’d be stressed without you, but I’m chillin’. You thought I wouldn’t sell without you, sold nine million.
For some people, they need a trigger to push themselves to their limits; a life-changing moment. A moment that will make them free, that will make them survivors. For some people, that moment is when someone is out of their life, and allow them to care more for themselves. For some people, that moment is when they’re all alone, and taking time to think more about everything. “Thought I couldn’t breathe without you, I’m inhaling. You thought I couldn’t see without you, perfect vision. You thought I couldn’t last without you, but I’m lasting. You thought that I would die without you, but I’m living. Thought that I would fail without you, but I’m on top. Thought it would be over by now, but it won’t stop. Thought that I would self destruct, but I’m still here. Even in my years to come, I’m still gonna be here.

As long as we’re still breathing, problems will always come into our life. People are addicted to drama, we’re living in the drama, and we will search for another one whenever one is over. What makes us a survivor, then? I believe it’s in the way we react in the drama. Don’t go with the flow, make our own plot. Mistakes exist for people to learn. We’re better than yesterday. “I’m wishing you the best, pray that you are blessed, bring much success, no stress, and lots of happiness. I’m better than that, I’m not gonna blast you on the radio. I’m better than that, I’m not gonna lie on you and your family. I’m better than that, I’m not gonna hate on you in the magazines. I’m better than that, I’m not gonna compromise my Christianity. I’m better than that, you know I’m not gonna diss you on the internet. Cause my mama taught me better than that.
I’m a survivor. I’m not gonna give up. I’m not gonna stop. I’m gonna work harder. I’m a survivor. I’m gonna make it. I will survive. Keep on surviving.” Nothing lasts forever. And this too will pass. Those two sentences are frequently said yet not all people understand what it means, or perhaps they understand it in many different ways. However, no matter how they take it, it leads to one meaning; that losing something we hold most dear is not the end of everything. It’s just a beginning of something else. Something we haven’t known yet. Something that could be more than yesterday, or even more than now. Something more to life. Something that, if we take it in a positive light, will bring us to another level and surprise us with what it may become. Something that will make us a survivor. “After of all of the darkness and sadness, soon comes happiness. If I surround my self with positive things, I’ll gain prosperity.
