My favorite woman, Angelina Jolie, once said, “Without pain, there would be no suffering. Without suffering, we would never learn from our mistakes. To make it right, pain and suffering is the key to all windows. Without it, there is no way of life.” Without the way of life, we won’t survive. However, is being survivor enough? It’s the seventh day of May and suddenly that question pops up in my head. Is it over in us becoming a survivor? No. It’s not. It turns out that living life isn’t just an art of surviving. Living life is also an art of fighting. People are born to be fighter. Through each pain and suffering, through every lesson learned, we become stronger, we survive, and we are reborn again as a fighter. Therefore for every pain and suffering, for everyone who brings them into our life, we should be grateful instead of resentful. Indeed, everyone has a part to play on this stage called life; whether it’s a hero or a villain, or perhaps in between.

After all of the stealing and cheating, you probably think that I hold resentment for you. But, no, you’re wrong. ‘Cause if it wasn’t for all that you tried to do, I wouldn’t know just how capable I am to pull through. So I wanna say thank you, ‘cause it makes me that much stronger; makes me work a little bit harder. It makes me that much wiser; so thanks for making me a fighter.” –Christina Aguilera, Fighter

I have a song titled “Fighter” as today’s song for Free Spirit. The rock R n’ B song was performed by Christina Aguilera. It was released on March 13th 2003 as the third single from her fourth studio album titled “Stripped”. A source said that this song was inspired by Guns N’ Roses’ legendary hit “November Rain”, as it was characterized as a hybrid of rock and R n’ B that incorporates elements of arena rock and rock and roll. Though the track portrayed Aguilera thanking a man who had done wrong to her for making her a ‘fighter’, she was inspired by her own childhood life. She talked about her ‘very chaotic and abusive’ home, where she did not feel ‘safe’. In school, Aguilera was picked on and alienated because of her musical passion. However, it made her become ‘smarter and stronger’. To release herself, Aguilera started to write songs at the age of 15, both music and lyrics; and it was the way how she found her voice.

This song begins with a narration, “After all that you put me through, you think I’d despise you. But in the end I wanna thank you, ‘cause you’ve made me that much stronger.” Day by day, as people live, life forges them. Happiness and pain. Laughter and tears. Bliss and sadness. They are lessons. Mistakes. Resentment. Loneliness. They are the way people learn. “Fighter” tells about how life forges us to be a fighter. For some people, they have to be blinded in order to see things clearly. For some people, they have to be betrayed in order to know better which one to be trusted. “Well, I thought I knew you, thinking that you were true. Guess I couldn’t trust, called your bluff, time is up, ‘cause I’ve had enough. You were there by my side, always down for the ride. But your joy ride just came down in flames, ‘cause your greed sold me out in shame.
For some people, they have to be surprised in order to realize the truth. For some people, they have to be the victim in order to understand who the real villain is. “Never saw it coming, all of your backstabbing. Just so you could cash in on a good thing, before I’d realize your game. I heard you’re going round playing the victim now. But don’t even begin feeling I’m the one to blame, ‘cause you dug your own grave.” People never know what the future brings. But time reveals everything. And by the time it does, the revelation may hit us hard. However, the revelation will bring justice. Therefore in the end, after being broken down and crashed, we will rise again. “How could this man I thought I knew turn out to be unjust, so cruel. Could only see the good in you, pretend to not see the truth. You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself through living in denial. But in the end you’ll see, you won’t stop me.

Some people are stronger at broken places. Fighters are born at broken places. And the fight is the trigger, whether it’s against themselves or someone else. “After all of the stealing and cheating, you probably think that I hold resentment for you. But, no, you’re wrong. ‘Cause if it wasn’t for all that you tried to do, I wouldn’t know just how capable I am to pull through. So I wanna say thank you.” Because fighters aren’t born in peaceful zones. Because fighters aren’t made by sugar-coated comfort. Because fighters aren’t forged by only happiness and laughter. Because fighters are forged by sadness and pain. Because fighters are made by heart-wrenching torture. Because fighters are born in war zones. “After all of the fights and the lies, ‘cause you’re wanting to haunt me, but that won’t work anymore. No more, it’s over. ‘Cause if it wasn’t for all of your torture, I wouldn’t know how to be this way now and never back down. So I wanna say thank you.
Indeed, life is a never ending battle. No matter what the future brings, we must ready to fight anytime. Therefore when hurdles come for the first time, be grateful, be thankful, because it allows us to practice, it forges us to become a real fighter. “‘Cause it makes me that much stronger; makes me work a little bit harder. It makes me that much wiser; so thanks for making me a fighter. Made me learn a little bit faster, made my skin a little bit thicker. Makes me that much smarter, so thanks for making me a fighter.” No matter how bad things that we must go through, we’ve been forged into a fighter. “I am a fighter and I, I ain’t gonna stop. There is no turning back, I’ve had enough.” And what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger, indeed. “You thought I would forget, but I remembered, ‘cause I remembered, I remembered.

Christina Aguilera on the "Fighter" music video - source: vevo.com

A music video for “Fighter” was directed by Floria Sigismondi and garnered numerous awards, including Video of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards. This song received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who praised Christina Aguilera’s vocals and the its empowering lyrics. The New York Times editor, Kelefa Sanneh, positively viewed the track's theme as ‘fearless’ and ‘full of mildly rebellious rhetoric’. Since its release, “Fighter” has been recognized as one of Aguilera’s most empowering songs for women due to the lyrics. It made Aguilera’s wish came true as she wanted to make an ‘emotionally rich and positive empowering’ song, especially for women, in order for them to speak for themselves be strong. The song was written by Aguilera herself along with Scott Storch. And yes, this one’s my favorite among Aguilera’s hits. Not only lyrically but also musically. It’s just inspiringly epic!
