Lovers come and go, and most young loves don’t last forever. Love of our young days always feel so great. It’s the first time experience for everything, of falling in love, of being in love, of dating, of separating, from the way we found love until we lost it; Lost and Found. Young loves are like a teenage dream; so beautiful yet happens so fast, so passionate yet ends so suddenly. One time they come and one other time they go. No one knows what the future will bring. One time it feels perfect like there’s nothing could come in between and would break it apart, but one other time the reality hits hard and everything is already gone. In this life, there’s somebody for someone, somebody who was got away.

Used to steal your parents’ liquor and climb to the roof. Talk about our future like we had a clue. Never planned that one day, I’d be losing you.” –Katy Perry, The One That Got Away

A song titled “The One That Got Away” is today’s song for Lost and Found. The pop song is performed by American female singer, Katy Perry. She wrote the song herself, along with Lukasz Gottwald (also known as Dr. Luke) and Max Martin, stating “I think that everyone can relate to this song. I wrote about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through. It’s a bittersweet story. Hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had ‘The One’ get away.

“The One That Got Away” is a song about a long gone young love, perhaps first love, that is so deep, memorable, and unforgettable. With all those innocences of our younger days, young love always seems inseparable. And everything feels perfect, like it would last forever. “Summer after high school when we first met, we’d make out in your Mustang to Radiohead. And on my 18th birthday, we got matching tattoos.” Young love always seems so beautiful when we’re having it. But no matter how great it is, no one can avoid the destiny when it has to come to an end. Nothing is perfect. And nothing lasts forever. “Used to steal your parents’ liquor and climb to the roof. Talk about our future like we had a clue. Never planned that one day, I’d be losing you.” Young love always feels so great when we’re in it. But who knows what the future brings? Breaking up, being broken heart, it’s never on the map. Painful loss, hurt separation, it’s never a part of the plan. “I was June and you were my Johnny Cash. Never one without the other, we made a pact. Sometimes when I miss you, I put those records on.”
Everything seemed like a dream, because all that happened back then was so great. And we still can’t believe that we’re coming to this point now; that the person is already moving on. But no matter how great it was, no one could avoid that they got to face the truth now. “Someone said you had your tattoo removed, saw you downtown singing the blues. It’s time to face the music, I’m no longer your muse.” We felt it all, but the words were just left unsaid. We had it all, but we let it slip through our hands. And there’s no worse feeling than realizing it. “All this money can’t buy me a time machine, no. Can’t replace you with a million rings, no. I should’ve told you what you meant to me, ‘cause now I pay the price.” There’s no worse feeling than realizing that there won’t be another life to make it right, to keep the promises, to be together with that person, to have them stay; that there won’t be another chance in this life; that the person was the one that got away from our life. “In another life, I would be your girl. We’d keep all our promises, be us against the world. In another life, I would make you stay. So I don’t have to say you were the one that got away.”

According to a source close to Perry, this song was inspired by the actor Johnny Lewis, whom she dated for around 18 months in 2005 and 2006. For the record, Lewis was found dead in the driveway of his home on September 2nd 2012. The singer never admits it herself, but if it’s true, then we understand why she used the term “in another life” for the lyrics. Because, the man she told us in this song was passed away. However, the speculation could also be wrong because the song was released before the death of Lewis. The music video for “The One That Got Away” was premiered on November 11th 2011. It was directed by Floria Sigismondi and starred Mexican actor, Diego Luna, as Perry’s love interest. The storyline is a heart-breaking one, portraying the soul of the lyrics very well; that sometimes, when the young love dies, our younger self is also died in that moment.

In another life, I would be your girl. We’d keep all our promises, be us against the world. In another life, I would make you stay. So I don’t have to say you were the one that got away.” –Katy Perry, The One That Got Away
