You and I

As I grow up, I believe that there’s always a certain someone for everyone, someone whom they always long for in some times. As we grow up, we become distant with some people somehow; a relative, a friend, even a lover. But, you know, though the people come and go, the memories stay with us forever. And some people leave traces a way deeper than anybody else. Why? Perhaps, there was something different we felt since we first met them. Perhaps, they got us unlike anybody else before them, of even after them. Perhaps, we became distant with them when we weren’t ready to lose them. Perhaps, there were too many similarities we had with them, which made us feel like we were destined to belong with each other, like a soulmate. We might have gone in separate ways, but that feeling remains somehow. And there are times, when we long for that time; a time where there was you and I, together as us.

You and I are like white sailboats that acrossed along the waves. You and I walked along the street that filled with fallen leaves. You and I both loved the snowy days during winter.” –Sorisae, You and I (그대 그리고 )

Talking about missing the past lover, here is today’s song for My Choices: Continue Living. It’s a Korean classic called “You and I (그대 그리고 )”, which was performed by South Korea’s legendary folk band, Sorisae. The pop folk song was first release in 1989. Upon its release, this song was sold more than a million copies, therefore it made Sorisae famous. A member of Sorisae, Hwang Yeong Ik, said that this song was loved because Kang Bu Ja –Korean once-famous and now-legendary actress– and Jo Yeong Nam –Korean once-famous and now-legendary actor and singer– sang it often on television.

What I love from classic songs is that most of them have short yet meaningful poetical lyrics, and “You and I (그대 그리고 )” is one of them. The lyrics tell about the longing feeling people have for their past lovers. When they recall those times they spent together back then, the pictures of those glory days are appearing one by one, like watching scenes in a movie. “You and I are like white sailboats that acrossed along the waves. You and I walked along the street that filled with fallen leaves. You and I both loved the snowy days during winter.” And all that come into our minds is the togetherness we had back then; the dreams we shared, the journey we took, the things we loved, the way we used to.
“You and I sometimes held the sadness and cried our hearts out. You and I both dropped our heads to soothe our empty hearts. You and I, we long for each other though we’ve gone separate ways.” And all that comes into our heart is the feeling we had back then; through the happiness and sadness, through the bad and the good. Realizing that the love was real back then, it makes us longing for them even more, even after a long time we’ve been apart with that person. And just like that, the memories when there were you and I together, are resurrected. Indeed, there’s always a certain someone for everyone, someone whom they always long for in some times, because of the soulmates-like similarities they had back then.

Kang Bu Ja and Kim Tae Woo performed "You and I" in "Immortal Songs 2"

Korean senior and legendary actress, Kang Bu Ja, collaborated with the famous main vocalist of Korean senior and legendary idol group g.o.d, Kim Tae Woo, for a performance of “You and I (그대 그리고 )” in an entertainment music program, “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”. It was during the “Actor Special” episode when the mom-and-son-like duo showed their impressive singing skills. This 143rd episode was aired on KBS television station on March 8th 2014, and later was broadcasted by KBS World channel on March 29th 2014. With their pop orchestra rendition of the song, the duet gave out a sincere and touching performance, as they brought out the beauty of the song that successfully touched everyone’s soul.
