Love; simple to say yet very far from simple to understand. The magical touch it has that makes people do even the craziest little thing. The supernatural force it has that makes people do even the silliest small thing. Even smart people could do stupid things because of love. But how far would you go for love? How deep would you fall in the name of love? How long would take for the sake of love? Would you run across the sky for it? Even though it might burn you to death, even though it might hurt to to the greatest pain, would you? It might break you down and tear you apart, but when you heal, you grow stronger with it. Never restrain yourself to run across the sky for the sake of love, because anything is possible in the name of love; It’s Okay, This Is Love.

My heart was pounding, as someone was chasing after me from behind. At the end of the dark cliff, there was no more place to stand on my feet. When I sincerely called out your name, I felt my throat choked again and again. Your warm voice ringing in my ears, that was my salvation.” –Lee Juck, Run Across the Sky (하늘을 달리다)

Love doesn’t have to be ballad. So let me bring you a song to pump up the mood and spirit of love. It’s a dynamic pop rock song by South Korea’s prominent male singer-songwriter, Lee Juck, titled “Run Across the Sky (하늘을 달리다)”. The English title is also known as “Running in the Sky”. It was first released on May 13th 2003 as the lead single of Lee’s second solo studio album, “2”. The song was written and composed by Lee himself.

“Run Across the Sky (하늘을 달리다)” is a song about someone who finds their anchor; their other half, a person who could give them salvation, hope, and most important, love. People struggle in life, and for some people, they struggle much more than the others; pain of loss, grieve of broken heart, fear of loneliness, disappoinment of shattered dreams; all the darkness that a past could bring in someone’s life. “I hated myself, as it seemed that I was only worth this much and able no more after all. My old dreams seemed like empty memories of my young days. When I whispered your name secretly, I restrained myself from crying. Your warm voice ringing in my ears, that was my hope.” But there’s always someone for somebody out there, who can be the anchor of soul; the source of strength, to be able to erase those darkness and fly away towards the brightness future. “To give strength for my frail soul, if only I could put up wings on it.” Someone whom we will afford them anything, whom we will try to do everything in order to just be able to be with them, whom we are willing to give them all even though it might break us apart. “Even if I fly too close to the sun, even if both my legs melt away and I fall, my heart will forever run into your heart.”

In 2013, “Run Across the Sky (하늘을 달리다)” was featured in a four-episodes KBS’ special mini-drama, “Adolescence Medley”. It was on the 4th episode when this song was performed by actor Kwak Dong Yeon. And that was the first time I discovered this lovely song. It also had been remade by many singers, such as Jung Dong Ha and So Hyang. With its addictive melody and inspiring lyrics, this song is definitely a classic.

If only I could run across the dry sky and throw myself into your arms, I don’t care if my body would break apart into pieces.” –Lee Juck, Run Across the Sky (하늘을 달리다)
