The Heart to Forget

Beth Hoffman once said, “When a chapter of your Life Book is complete, your spirit knows it’s time to turn the page so a new chapter can begin. Even when you’re scared or think you’re not ready, your spirit knows you are.” Even when you keep remember the love that had gone, your heart knows you have to forget. The Remembered and The Forgotten; like a blank page of white sheet, some things must be erased in order for us to be able to write a new story on it, so is the heart. Some things must be forgotten in order for it to be able to welcome the new ones to be remembered. The art of forgetting is never easy, indeed. Yet the greatest thing could never be achieved easily. It’s bothering, hurting, and even killing. Yet once you could get through that, there’s nothing you can be afraid of anymore.

With the heart to forget you, I close the door to my empty room. Your scent that still lingers, it has filled my empty room.” –Kim Kwang Seok, With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)

A classic Korean hits by a legendary singer, the late Kim Kwang Seok, titled “With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)” is a great track to accompany our contemplation moment in the beginning of this new year. This folk ballad song was first released on 1992 as a part of Kim’s third studio album. In an entertainment music program, “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend”, the song was performed by a member of female vocal duo Davichi, Kang Min Kyung, during the Kim Kwang Seok special on episode 20. The episode was broadcasted by KBS television station on October 15th 2011, and by KBS World channel on November 5th 2011.
“With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)” is a song about someone who’s trapped in his/her past as they keep being reminisced of the love that had left. For people who has been being left by the one they truly love, it’s not being alone that hurts them the most, it’s the loneliness. “As I lay down and look at the ceiling like this, your presence is shimmering in my eyes. When I turn away to forget you, the dew drops silently fall from my eyes.” It’s not being alone that kills them, it’s the memories that keep haunting. It’s not the emptiness left behind, it’s the lingering traces. “The countless stars that shine in the night sky, they’re each so beautiful. But there is just only one bright star within my heart, that’s you.” People reminiscing in order to forget. On the other hand, sometimes they end up remembering while trying to forget. And their heart and mind go in and out of memories, as they keep writing and erasing the love all over again. “When the awaited dawn comes through my windowsill, in my room that feels larger than yesterday. On the bright white glass of the window, I write, I erase, I love you.” Moving on is a process, indeed.
As one of the late Kim Kwang Seok’s memorable hits, “With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)” was covered by many singers. Besides Kang Min Kyung’s ballad rendition for “Immortal Songs 2”, the second famous cover version is the one that was sung by the Superstar K4’s winner, Roy Kim. He performed his rock ballad rendition of “With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)” in several occasions. Singers and musicians duo, 10cm, also did a cover of this melancholic song. It rarely happens to me but among all of those versions, I enjoy them all and can’t pick the most favorite of all. Guess it’s the power of the song, indeed.

Inside memories from times that have gone by, it would be done if I could forget them. But why do I keep staying awake all night long, unable to forget them again?” –Kim Kwang Suk, With The Heart To Forget You (잊어야 한다는 마음으로)
