It's My Life

Saturday, January 31, 2015

Here we are, at the last day of the first month of 2015. And also, the last post for The Remembered and The Forgotten. I won’t say much this time, since I’ve said so many in the posts before. At last, I give a quote from Denis Waitley, “Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.” So, happy living your 2015 life, Readers! Stay strong and keep moving on.

This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted, no silent prayer for the faith-departed. I ain’t gonna be just a face in the crowd, you’re gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud.” –Bon Jovi, It’s My Life

For the last post in this January, let’s wrap up the first month of the new year with something hot and rockin’. Coming from one of my favorite rock bands, Bon Jovi, it’s an alternative rock metal song titled “It’s My Life”. It was released on May 23rd 2000 as the first single from their seventh studio album titled “Crush”. The song charted in the top 10 across several countries, making Bon Jovi the only band once classified as 1980s hair metal to reach the top 40 in the 2000s, a testament to how the song managed to introduce the band to a new, younger fanbase. It’s arguably their most well known post-1980s hit single.
“It’s My Life” ia a song about someone taking control of their own lives; an anthem of freedom. It’s like a motivation to rise up the spirit of living, to move on from a broken heart, to wake up from mourning, to stand stall and never back down. “This is for the ones who stood their ground; for Tommy and Gina who never backed down. Tomorrow’s getting harder, make no mistake; luck ain’t even lucky, got to make your own breaks.” Life will always be full of hurdles indeed, yet God never gives more than human could handle. So let’s face it with our head held high. “Better stand tall when they’re calling you out; don’t bend, don’t break, don’t back down.” It’s our lives and we should, we must, take control of it, don’t bend and don’t break. We won’t live forever anyway, so while we’re alive, it’s now or never. Be free and open your heart. Like Frank Sinatra said, let’s do this our way.
The music video of “It’s My Life”, directed by Wayne Isham, won as Video Of The Year at the VH1 My Music Awards. It starred Will Estes and Shiri Appleby as Tommy and Gina, the characters from the lyrics, respectively. Tommy and Gina were a fictional working class couple that Bon Jovi and Sambora first wrote about in their 1986 hit, “Livin' on a Prayer”. Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Max Martin, this song became an anthem that appealed to many fans, as it spreaded the spirit of living your own life without letting anyone else taking control over it. Indeed, “It’s My Life” is a grand masterpiece from the legendary rock band.

It’s my life, and it’s now or never, ‘cause I ain’t gonna live forever. I just want to live while I’m alive. My heart is like an open highway. Like Frankie said, I did it my way. I just want to live while I’m alive, ‘cause it’s my life.” –Bon Jovi, It’s My Life

Don’t bend, don’t break, baby, don’t back down

I just want to live while I’m alive, it’s my life
My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said I did it my way
I just want to live while I’m alive, ‘cause it’s my life!”
