Through the Rain

When you get caught in the rain with no where to run; when you’re distraught and in pain without anyone; when you keep crying out to be saved, but nobody comes. And you feel so far away that you just can’t find your way home, you can get there alone, it’s okay, what you say is; I can make it through the rain, I can stand up once again on my own. And I know that I’m strong enough to mend.” –Mariah Carey, Through the Rain

Okay, I know it might sounded so dramatic, but right now I’m literally writing this as the rain is falling so hard outside. Indeed, it’s November rain. And I’m sitting here, in my office desk, which is just beside the window, so I can see and hear clearly the raindrops (not to mention the thunders are also screaming loud out there!). As doing so, which makes this situation more dramatic, I’m listening to the second best songs about rain (the first best is, of course, Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain”, which you can read the review here, in case you missed it), “Through the Rain” by the Queen of R n’ B, Mariah Carey. This song was released on October 17th 2002, as the lead single of Carey’s ninth studio album, titled “Charmbracelet”, which was released on December 3rd 2002. Written by Carey herself along with Lionel Cole, “Through the Rain” marked Carey’s comeback in the music industry after some personal struggles she had been through in 2001. Moreover, the song is lyrically encouraging people to find their inner strength and move on from all hurdles they face, which is so well suited with Carey’s own true experiences.

There’s no life without struggles. Sometimes, struggle is the thing that defines us. It makes us who we are now; it brings us to the next level of maturity; it takes us to the next level of life; when we are able to make through it. That’s why in this song, the term “rain” is used to describe that struggle in life. Like what I’ve mentioned before, this song is about encouraging people to find their strength to move on and make it through all the struggles in life; to make it through the rain. “When you get caught in the rain with no where to run. When you’re distraught and in pain without anyone. When you keep crying out to be saved, but nobody comes. And you feel so far away that you just can’t find your way home. You can get there alone, it’s okay.” There are times when we feel so alone, like there’s no one out there for us. There are times when we feel so down, like there’s no good things left in this life. There are times when we feel so lost, like there’s nowhere to go. But all we have to know and believe is that, we’re not alone though we might be lonely; we can make good things even by bad things that happen; we can get there by ourselves. “And if you keep falling down, don’t you dare give in. You will arise safe and sound, so keep pressing on steadfastly. And you’ll find what you need to prevail.”
When you get caught in the rain, instead of busy running away or covering yourself from it, why don’t you just let yourself get wet and feel the raindrops dance upon you? Struggles in life are meant to be gotten through, not to be ran away from. So, all you need to say to yourself is, “I can make it through the rain, I can stand up once again on my own, and I know that I’m strong enough to mend. And every time I feel afraid, I hold tighter to my faith. And I live one more day, and I make it through the rain.” Don’t be afraid and don’t hesitate. Don’t let anybody else encourages you in every way. Don’t be scared of the rain, face it and go through it. There’s nothing that won’t pass, even the cold November rain. “And when the rain blows, as shadows grow close, don’t be afraid, there’s nothing you can't face. And should they tell you, you’ll never pull through, don’t hesitate, stand tall and say,” that we can make it through the rain.

The music video (MV) of “Through the Rain”, directed by Dave Meyers, depicts a story that is inspired by Mariah Carey’s parents’ true life experiences. The MV is starring J.D. Williams and Jamie-Lynn Sigler as the young version of Carey’s father and mother respectively. The storyline is about an interracial couple whose relationship is being dejected by the girl’s parents. “Through the Rain” is a ballad R n’ B song, with the touch of soft electronic pop in the background melody. It’s emotionally a very personal song for Carey and I can understand that in every way. I love how Carey’s vocal goes on and off the falsetto, and as always, the Queen of R n’ B is never disappointing in terms of vocal. Anyway, as I’m done writing this, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining outside. Though it’s already 4:00 pm now, the sunlight is still clear as I can feel the warm breeze after the rain. See, we can always make it through the rain.

And when the rain blows, as shadows grow close, don’t be afraid, there’s nothing you can't face . And should they tell you, you’ll never pull through, don’t hesitate, stand tall and say.” –Mariah Carey, Through the Rain

“When you get caught in the rain with no where to run
When you’re distraught and in pain without anyone
When you keep crying out to be saved, but nobody comes
And you feel so far away that you just can’t find your way home
You can get there alone, it’s okay, what you say is

I can make it through the rain, I can stand up once again on my own
And I know that I’m strong enough to mend
And every time I feel afraid I hold tighter to my faith
And I live one more day and I make it through the rain

And if you keep falling down, don’t you dare give in
You will arise safe and sound, so keep pressing on steadfastly
And you’ll find what you need to prevail, what you say is

And when the rain blows, as shadows grow close, don’t be afraid, there’s nothing you can't face
And should they tell you, you’ll never pull through, don’t hesitate, stand tall and say

I can make it through the rain, and I live once again
And I live one more day, and I can make it through the rain
Yes you can, you will make it through the rain”
