Yesterday, the rain was falling all the day. It was falling densely through the dust in the air. Your delicate voice was softly resonating in my ears, but it soon vanished into the sound of rain. Sometimes I do shed tears because of longing. Sometimes my heart does ache because of loneliness.” –Kim Kwang Seok, Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만) [translated lyrics]

Back on the early 2014, it was 19 years had passed after South Korea lost one of its genius musicians, Kim Kwang Seok. To commemorate the 19 years since he has passed away, the entertainment music program “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend” had the late Kim as the legend for its 136th episode. This the late Kim’s special edition was broadcasted by KBS television station on January 18th 2014, and was aired on KBS World channel on February 8th 2014. In this episode, Kim’s song were being revived, including the song that’s considered to be the most popular song of Kim, titled “Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만)”. This song was performed by Jung Dong Ha, the homme fatale on the stage. At that time when he participated in the program for this episode, it was only five days prior to his own wedding. Yet he agreed to make an appearance in order to give honour for the late Kim. Jung described Kim’s music as a food without MSG; a pure music. Jung loved how Kim’s music reveals his soul. And as the first performer of that episode, Jung gave a breathtaking performance, as always, and proved once again that he’s an amazing vocalist.

Rain is magical, indeed. When we hear the sound of the raindrops, we can find ourselves being thrown in our deepest memory, even without realizing. That memory could be about anything, including a hurtful memory about our unrequited love. “Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만)” tells about someone who’s reminiscing his/her one-sided love whom he/she can’t have even though he/she deeply loved that person. And guess what, it happens when it rains. “Yesterday, the rain was falling all the day. It was falling densely through the dust in the air. Your delicate voice was softly resonating in my ears, but it soon vanished into the sound of rain.”
The feeling of longing, the feeling of loneliness, sometimes they’re unbearable. Especially when the rain falls, the longing get bigger, the loneliness gets deeper. But they say, that it isn’t true love when it doesn’t make you shed tears, and that it isn’t real love when it doesn’t hurt your heart. “Sometimes I do shed tears because of longing. Sometimes my heart does ache because of loneliness.” When we love someone, we can’t just stop like that even though the feeling is only one-sided. When we love someone, we can’t erase it just like that even though we can’t reach that person. When we love someone, we can’t bury it just like that even though we can’t stand by that person’s side. “Even though I loved you, now I can only watch over you from afar, I can’t approach you. I want to stay beside you when you’re tired, yet I have no choice but to leave, even though I loved you.” Even though we love that person, we can’t have them. Even though we can’t have them, we can’t stop loving that person.

Jung Dong Ha when performen "Even Though I Loved You" on the 136th episode of "Immortal Songs 2"

Before Jung Dong Ha’s performance in episode 136, the late Kim Kwang Seok’s “Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만)” was performed before Nam Woohyun –the main vocal of boy group Infinite– on the 20th episode of “Immortal Songs 2”. This episode was broadcasted on October 15th 2011 by KBS television station, and later was aired on November 5th 2011 on KBS World channel. “Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만)” was first released on 1991. Many of the late Kim’s songs remain popular through years, because he sang sincerely about our lives, including this song. Kim’s sorrowful voice stands out in this masterpiece, as it delivers a wide range of emotions. Even with only a small harmonica and a guitar, his songs could comfort us. Even though the late Kim is not here with us anymore, his songs are still alive in people’s hearts. And definitely, will be remembered for a long time. Truly a legend.

Even though I loved you, now I can only watch over you from afar, I can’t approach you. I want to stay beside you when you’re tired, yet I have no choice but to leave, even though I loved you.” –Kim Kwang Suk, Even Though I Loved You (사랑했지만) [translated lyrics]
