Like a Child

I just can’t do anything, and now I’m regretting like a child. I can’t say anything and I’m just letting you go, like a character from a sad movie.” –Shin Hye Sung, Like a Child (OST. Discovery of Love) [translated lyrics]

October, a month to celebrate a broken heart. One of Korean drama series that I’ve reviewed gives us a song that fits the broken heart theme of this month. Taken from the original soundtrack of “Discovery of Love”, it’s a ballad song titled “Like a Child (어린애처럼)”. This song is performed by Shin Hye Sung, lead vocalist of South Korea’s longest-running male idol group to date, Shinhwa. He lends his sweet voice as his fellow Shinhwa member is taking part as the main role in “Discovery of Love”, Eric Moon. “Like a Child (어린애처럼)” was released on October 2nd 2014 as a single titled “Discovery of Love OST Part 9”.

“Like a Child (어린애처럼)” is a song about letting go the one you really love with all of your heart. Indeed, letting go is a heartbreaking thing to do. From the moment you prepare for it even until after you do it, all of the process is heartbreaking. No matter how ready you are to let go, that fear of not being able to remember all good memories is haunting. No matter how ready you are to let go, the fear of not being able to turn back the time if you regret is haunting. “I’m looking at you again, your white face, your pretty lips. Will I be able to remember everything if I let you go? I’m bowing my head again, and all my tears that I’ve held back. Will I be able to turn everything back if I beg you?” When love is not there anymore, when there is nothing you can hold onto anymore, when letting go is the only thing to do, then what can you do? No matter how ready you are to let go, the fear of being heart-broken is haunting. “I’m lifting up my head again, and all the sadness that remains. Your face says that you’re sorry, and my tears suddenly fall.”
After the separation, after you let go of that person, comes the hardest part; letting go of your own feeling towards that person. No matter how ready you were, regret is inevitable. The regret that comes from those unsaid words. “I just can’t do anything, and now I’m regretting like a child. I can’t say anything and I’m just letting you go, like a character from a sad movie.” No matter how ready you were, tears are irresistible. Tears that come from the inability to do anything. “I just can’t do anything, and I’m just crying like this like a child. I’m shedding tears and I’m just letting you go without even giving any excuse. Do you really have to go? Can’t I be the one? My heart is hurt like an incurable disease. I guess I love you this much, without I even realize.” After the separation, emptiness remains, sadness lingers. As the pain keeps rising, as the desperation keeps increasing, you realize that as much as you feel hurt, you love that person with all of your heart. You never know what you got until you lost it. You never realize how deep is your love until you let it go. But everything’s too late now. And just like a child who’s being lost, you could only cry it out. “Me, toward you, I love you.”

The song “Like a Child (어린애처럼)”, beside showcasing the beautiful melancholic voice of Shin Hye Sung, it is also representing the sad love story between the characters in “Discovery of Love”; that is when Kang Tae Ha (portrayed by Eric Moon) and Nam Ha Jin (portrayed by Sung Joon) both decide to let go of Han Yeo Reum (portrayed by Jung Yu Mi). Yeo Reum is the love of both lives, but they have to let go of her in order for the three of them to be able to (mengurai) the entangled yet complicated love fate between them. It’s a beautiful track from Shin and it goes well with the drama series’ storyline. Beware, the sad melody is quite addictive.

I just can’t do anything, and I’m just crying like this like a child. I’m shedding tears and I’m just letting you go without even giving any excuse. Do you really have to go? Can’t I be the one? My heart is hurt like an incurable disease. I guess I love you this much, without I even realize.” –Shin Hye Sung, Like a Child (OST. Discovery of Love) [translated lyrics]
