At the willow leaves she sprinkled on the pond, the girl with an unknown name stared lonesomely. In the small pond where no one visits, the night grew deeper and the birds went to sleep.” –Kim Jung Ho, Nameless Girl [translated lyrics]

People say that many great people are gone too soon. They are gone too soon. South Korea also has many great singers and musicians that are gone too soon at such young age. One of them is the late Kim Jung Ho. Born in 1952 and died in 1985, Kim’s age froze at 34. He was a hit-maker and gifted musician, a singer-songwriter that dominated South Korean music industry in the 1970s. He left the world with his songs in people’s hearts. He sang with sadness, but people were comforted. Above all, the late Kim Jung Ho is an everlasting singer. The famous song that the late Kim Jung Ho wrote with just a guitar, it’s a song that will dampen everyone’s heart once more.
Written with a simple storyline yet having a poetic structure and deep meaning, “Nameless Girl” tells the story about a man who was mesmerized by a girl he once saw on one night. She was all alone, sat by the pond. “At the willow leaves she sprinkled on the pond, the girl with an unknown name stared lonesomely. In the small pond where no one visits, the night grew deeper and the birds went to sleep.” Though he didn’t even know her name, he knew it from her presence that she was so lonely and sad; so fragile that he wanted to save and protect her. But the night grew deeper, and she just disappeared into the fog. “Drenched in the moonlight, the golden water was moved by the wind. In the rippling water, to soothe her heart, she waited silently and turned away lonesomely. The girl with an unknown name, she disappeared into the fog.” In a metaphor, this man fell in a love with a girl who was waiting for someone else. He watched over her all the time, but her heart wasn’t there and it was belong to someone else. Even though she turned away from him, he kept waiting for her and watching her from a distance.

Both of the arrangements captured the essence of the original song; a soulful ballad sent to heaven. Indeed, “Nameless Girl” is an everlasting song from an everlasting singer. It’s a classic, it’s a legend, and it’s the best.
