Being Alone

I turned around with a silent and calm face, but my empty heart couldn’t be steady as it kept fluttering. There were still so many words that left unsaid, but my painful heart dried up my throat, therefore I couldn’t say anything.” –Byun Jin Sub, Being Alone [translated lyrics]

At first, he didn’t like this song because the chorus sounded too mature. But, with a pleasant voice, he became a huge star in just a year after his debut, after winning several awards through this song. And now, he claims that this song is his “life’s song”.
I love how this song got me so since the first time I heart it. The lyrics on chorus part that said, “I’m not afraid of separation, I can hold back my tears, but the truth of being alone makes me sad,” really got me so. That part tells everything about the song. “Being Alone” is a song about the deep sadness of being alone. It’s about someone who recalls about the separation with his beloved one. On that day, he tried so hard to remain calm on the outside, while he was tearing apart in the inside. On that day, he had so many things he wanted to say, but those words were being left unsaid because it was too painful to say anything. “I turned around with a silent and calm face, but my empty heart couldn’t be steady as it kept fluttering. There were still so many words that left unsaid, but my painful heart dried up my throat, therefore I couldn’t say anything.” And now, here he is, being left alone and reminiscing about those past days. Drowning all alone in memories, for him it will be another lonely sleepless night. In the loneliness, he realizes, that indeed, instead of the pain and tears, the thing that hurts more of a separation is being left alone. “As I remember the past days, as I wander through the countless memories, I will spend through the long night staying up, I have to comfort my loneliness. I’m not afraid of separation, I can hold back my tears, but the truth of being alone makes me sad.”
No need for fancier arrangements, the original was great already, so people tend to stick for it. Indeed, it’s a legendary song from a legendary singer. The sadness of “Being Alone” is everlasting, and so is the song itself.

As I remember the past days, as I wander through the countless memories, I will spend through the long night staying up, I have to comfort my loneliness, I’m not afraid of separation, I can hold back my tears, but the truth of being alone makes me sad.” –Byun Jin Sub, Being Alone [translated lyrics]
